I think Ruby and Dani staying with Tex and Santana is a good thing. Tex will feel like he is the head of his herd. Would he protect them from predators? I like the idea of Carl and Tat staying with the goats to protect them. Trinity has to stay with her mom until she is weaned. Now you will have 3 farms to take care of Lester. At least you will always have one field lay to rest while the cows use the other fields, and you will always have grass for them. You will have enough to make your own hay as well! 😊

It is always best to go at the first start. Dani and Ruby need to learn what it means to be part of the cow herd. (I grew up on a farm). Midterm the "cliques" are already settled. As a former teacher you know kids and their behavior. Just as you know what will always be best for your critters. So to say, YOU will do what is best even when you are explaining and saying you want to see what we think. You already know what will be and what is best.

I really worry about them moving to the new property, but I know that you will have someone living on the property at least temporarily. I was thinking that maybe Ben could live on site at least temporarily. Until you know that they will be predator safe. I think taking the guys would probably be the best situation to let the predators in the area know that their is a new Boss in town.

My Daddy ran my Hereford bull with his tiny herd of Hereford cows (about 10 head) and one Jersey milk cow and calf. My Jersey calf gave birth to her first calf, a Jersey/Hereford cross when she was 12 months old! Bulls can and will take interest in little heifers. My Daddy and two neighbors had to pull the calf with a come-a-long. I thought my heifer was going to die. Both survived and became good brood stock but it was scary. Please consider this when planning what to do with Ruby and Dani.

I agree with your idea with Tex. He would be the first one to find a weakness in the new property. We all know that even if we don't think about it much. Keeping him and Santiana back would be the best idea to ensure there isn't going to be the stress and headaches in that area. I also agree with you sending Ruby and Dani over with the others to get them more firmly established into the herd and they won't have to go through the adjustment period again. I am probably wrong about this, but they are learning what it means to be a longhorn and a part of a herd and keeping them back might interrupt that. I know in the end you and Jami will do what you believe is the right thing to do so I will be happy just the same. You know them better than we do. Seeing all that winter grass coming up makes my heart so happy, I know it's not enough yet but there is GREEN!!!😍

Lester i completely understand your thinking as far as moving tex. Tex is a big boy and it is definitely gonna take some time and patience to move him. Whatever you choose to do will be in the best interest and safety for tex and you and whomever helps in the move.

Oh yes, please keep Tex!!! {EDIT to add} Is there anyway that Princess Ruby, Duchess, Lady-in-Waiting Trinity and Lady (Trinity's Mother) could all stay with the goats and/or the King & Prince, until the bottle babies are completely weaned and you are much more satisfied that they will be ok with the relocation plan (even if Trinity isn't fully weaned)?? I think bringing the three little ladies back to the herd with a preexisting herd cow AND keeping the calves together, would just make SO MUCH difference to the reintroduction. If I didn't explain well enough, just ask. I (like many others) am emotionally invested too. Thanks for caring for them and sharing them, with us.

As much trouble Tex has or can get into it’s better to have close eye on him. Let’s be honest Tex could push through the fencing if he really wanted to. Move Santana in with him. I think he will be fine. It could calm him down a tad. You could alternate pastures at LHL with the two of them giving the grounds time to regenerate grass. Then there is always the obvious your property is called LHL It would not seem right in your heart not to have longhorns there. Having said all that only you and Jamie will have to make that call. I think the smartest thing to do would be to train Tex to eat in the barn and load Santana up after Tex. It's clear an evident.... the stress he had when you started moving his family first before him. I think it's better to move him and santana. They're a family... they're a cluster.. I think they all belong put together and I think they should be put together I think it would be the best thing for the overall. The reason I would probably not leave text in Santana and Longhorn Lester if you're moving all the others,, is because if for some reason you have to move text and Santana and then move them to the other property it's going to be very hard on Santana and any future baby she has having to deal with fitting in again. I mean they're a family just keep them together

As a child, my family moved twice in my lifetime which involved leaving friends and starting over in a new location to make friends. Both times my family timed their move to coincide with the start of a new school year so I totally understand your thoughts of moving Ruby and Dani in the same time period when the rest of the herd is moved to the new location. I had no thoughts about you NOT moving Tex and Santana to the new location because I thought you wanted all your longhorns in one location. Now that you mention the possibility of leaving Tex and Santana at the LHL property; at least the Longhorn Lester name would still apply to that property. Once the new property sale is finalized, I have a suggestion: Perhaps place some trail cameras pointing in various directions that include the outside perimeter of the new property to see what kind of wildlife gets captured in the photos. Those photos, if any, would give you an indication the type of predator animals that currently roam that new property. Such information may help you decide when or whether to move the calves. The type of trail cameras that record information to a SD card and you swap out the SD cards to read or see the photos while at your computer is all you will need.

Hi Lester lots of decisions so many different scenarios. Head going ten to the dozen. If you want to move Tex the only way will be with Santiana being in the box with him. If you want him to stay will make things easier. The babies are so young and I understand the mindset of all going together just think it’s sad. Be worried they would get out and fencing would have to be calf proof as they used to going to see Kenny each day and wondering around all over the place. You know best will miss there quirkiness. As an Army brat I hated having to move to a new school once school had already started. I say move them with the other ladies. They are familiar with them. The longer you keep them with you at LHL the harder it’s going to be let them go. Even the momma bird makes her babies fly by pushing them out of the nest.

Tex and Santana are LHL . Makes sense to allow Ruby and Dani to become part of the herd, but they look so small/young. I said the same thing when my boys started kindergarten and college
