By far Orthodox choirs make the most powerful and moving music. I grew up in a church with nickleback wannabes rocking out for god but it seemed to be more about image and vanity for the people playing maybe thats just me being judgemental but this music actually makes me feel connected to something higher.

Please pray for the repose of my two neighbors, "Shorty" and Shain, who died recently of medical complications...a fall from either her always stumbling drunkenness where she hit her head, two days in a row, or simply complications from brain cancer...a neurological blackout. The concussion was fatal. The latter died of severe complications from strokes and heart disease. They were not Orthodox, but still.

Blessed are you, Lord God of our salvation, to you be praise and glory forever. As a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief your only Son was lifted up that he might draw the whole world to himself. May we walk this day in the way of the cross and always be ready to share its weight, declaring your love for all the world. Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God forever. Amen.

The kontakion for the dead is an 11th century Kievan chant. My dad was Ukrainian American and ukrainian Catholic (their Divine Liturgy is the same as the Russian orthodox) and at his memorial the choir sang this chant. It’s magnificent in its beauty and dignity. If you watch the original Dr. Zhivago, I think in the beginning of the film the villagers are carrying the Doctors dead mother’s casket and singing the kontakion on the way to the cemetery. It was a most touching scene.

For my sister Julie who passed away May 3, 2023, but nobody in her family would know until May 12. It is extreme irony that this beautiful woman, so filled with love and inner joy, who would make a room burst out in spontaneous laughter with her appearance, even in hospital waiting rooms where grim news was anticipated, spent her last years filled with an inner rage, lashing out angrily against all her closest family. Her last months were in almost complete isolation. Nobody knew her address, phone number only an email address that seldom responded. She was apparently rushed to the hospital with stomach pain. She had an intestinal blockage, likely for many weeks, that ruptured. She died of septic shock hours later- alone. We found out after she had already been cremated and her remains interred. When I hear the morning birds singing, I feel her presence. Gospodi pamilui, Julie Myers

My father passed away Dec 7 2020. I told the priest that me and my siblings wanted it in Greek and he said he didn’t know Greek. I have to say singing in English takes away the meaning of the service. Wish you would sing the hymns in Greek. May God be with us all and repent of our sins. AMEN 🙏
