I am not sure why trauma therapy was in this title, because this interview (interesting and too-erudite-for-me as it was), really was not concerned with trauma. Deep trauma can split a person into the logical versus the non-verbal/symbolic modes of thinking (and apparently even into multiple personalities as well), and that person can exist in a state of dissociation, where life does not seem completely real, for decades. Such a person may have trouble experiencing and identifying his or her own emotions, especially positive ones, and may not even feel like a real "person" at all. It takes time and a great deal of pain to reconnect to and rediscover one's personhood, and to begin to identify emotions. Can beauty be part of this? I certainly think it could be..although for me, cultivating a deep sense of safety was more important. At the same time, beauty and unconditional love can be terrifying for a person for whom that has not been reality, because, honestly, they seem too good to be true.

I know somebody with DID (and PTSD autism etc) who is converting to Orthodoxy and is VERY pained and traumatized indeed. It's very long story that hurt me a lot too, and I made myself sick not "staying in my lane" and trusting God. A lot of memories are blurs now. Please say a prayer for "K" when you get a chance. :(

Same, I was hoping for more on that. In the throes of trauma recovery for the past few years, and my Orthodox faith has been both a comfort and a struggle. Would love to know more, and positive thinking isn't going to cut it. Period. If I could think my way out of it, or be more positive, I wouldn't be here. That was not the least bit helpful, and misleading in the title.

Be gentle with yourself. Know that Orthodoxy provides a way to heal, and can be part of the larger process of recovery you are engaging in. I have been in trauma recovery for a couple of years now. Orthodoxy helps. So does EMDR, good psychotherapy, and recognizing that I cannot positively-think my way out of it. @@seronymus

You can't think or act your way into healing. Our theology and praxis has lost touch with our inherent Being, which is the only source of healing. True prayer is the noetic door to one's Being and healing.
