Movies that I don't see many reactions for are "blast from the past" - Brendan Fraser, "bedazzled" - Brendan Fraser and Elizabeth hurley and "Beverly hills ninja" hilarious movie starring Chris Farley, I'll suggest these on Patreon as well, I know y'all have a long list of movies to get through first but these would be a real treat for y'all to react to 😁🙏😁🙏

Noises Off. It's a movie about a stage play that goes wrong. It's very much like Oscar and stars Carol Burnett, John Ritter, Christopher Reeves, and Michael Caine. Very funny and absolutely crazy!

I remember Stallone was on a talk show promoting "Oscar," and he explained that, while he was in Europe, he discovered farce, which is a style of comedy you don't see that often in American cinema. He loved it and wanted to try that style of movie He knew it was a risk because it was different from the standard American comedy tastes and because audiences might not accept him in a non-action hero role, but he was willing to take that chance and was very excited to try something different. A lot of people have pointed out that Stallone's intelligence is often under appreciated, and his creativity is also under appreciated.

I agree, Stallone is often dismissed as being a "palooka," a stiff when it comes to acting. What I liked about him was he was willing to put himself out there and trust his audience. I thinking of "Copland" and this movie in particular.

Farce was a staple of comedies in the 30's and early 40's. They just sort of fell out of fashion with American audiences. We still get them from time to time. Clue, is a good example
@TheMule71

This style of comedy has roots in ancient Greek theater, but developed a lot more in ancient Rome. Skipping almost 2000 years, in cinema again in Italy we find "Commedia all'italiana", which is probably what Stallone was exposed to, which was extremely popular in the 60's. The key point is that the plot keeps moving forward by means of misunderstandings, which often combine one upon another, which leads to extremely absurd situations. In its pure form, it has little or no slapstick comedy, but the two genres can merge very well of course. It's not super common in Hollywood, where often emphasis is more on the slapstick side. You can find jokes based on taking something literally ("This woman has to be gotten to a hospital" - " Hospital? What is it?" - "It's big building with patients"), but in "Commedia all'italiana" misunderstandings drive the plot and sometimes last for the whole movie, until everything is resolved in the grand final. A good example of a mix is the Pink Panther franchise, whose first movie was definitely inspired by the Commedia all'Italiana, and later movies, with Sellers in the lead, leaned more on the slapstick side.

Loved the fact that Chazz Palminteri was given huge advice by Stallone to do like what he did and REFUSE to sell the rights to his 1 man play called "A Bronx Tale", and hold onto it until they agree to let him star in it and have DeNiro direct it who also agreed with that advice. Then a star was born!!!

Finally, I get to see "Oscar" get some love. When this was released in 1991 it did not get love from the critics or moviegoers...partially because people couldn't accept Stallone in a pure comedy - farce or screwball comedy, a la the style of the 30s and 40s. Even the ending, as you guys rightly pointed out, gets a chuckle because the titled drop comes at the very end of the movie. Comic genius. He is disposed of "expeditiously." I love this movie and can quote it almost word for word. Everyone is hilarious, but my favorites are Connie and Aldo. I especially loved the dialogue and I think that's where a lot of people were turned off. The script was true to the time/era of the day where "speak-easys" and "bathtub gin" was the order of the day. Sort of the comedy version of "The Sting." One of my favorite lines is when Connie and "Snaps" are going over the events of the day, and Connie asks to stay in the room because every time he leaves "I fall behind." In fact, I love your reaction so much that I'm going to watch the full length patreon reaction. You guys are awesome! Two comedies that I would love to see your reaction: "Victor/Victoria" (1982) and "Some Like It Hot!" (1959) with a special mention of "Someone Like You" (2001) with Hugh Jackman and Ashley Judd. the first two are considered American Screwball comedy and "Someone Like You" is considered your run-of-the-mill rom/com (but it's actually quite good).

The "E" that you hate in the credits is an old font used during the art deco era in the very late 20's and well into the 30's. Can ALWAYS tell when something is from the 30's by that font and architecture. One huge reason I always enjoyed the Empire State Building. Huge art deco involved with that skyscraper.

Gotta say, the 20s and 30s Had to have been quite a time to be alive. Aside from any social and economic issues, the mixture of science and art is incredible. Architecture, automobiles, clothing and jewelry, music and dance, the speakeasies, the movies in those glorious movie palaces, the art, the sexual revolution and freedom of women, the high interest in The Future, and even the crazy exploration of creativity and spirituality. They weren't The Roaring 20s for nothing. Everything from this period really is beautiful. It reminds me of the American version of the Japanese "dream world," ukiyoe; even though Art Deco is based on Egyptian art -- which was a huge influence due to the discovery of King Tut's tomb. I don't think Our Country has had that level of greatness except right after WWII, and even then, it's hard to compete with those aesthetics. I mean Googie design and architecture that took over Los Angeles for a second is awesome, but Art Deco is perfection

One of the best Stallone movies/comedies, so glad you picked it up! Another one I like (even though it tas low ratings) is Stop! or my mom will shoot! Very funny with a great mum. Oscar is in fact an american version of a stage play, there is a very famous original french movie "Oscar" from 1967, starring Louis de Funes, whom you probably not familiar with, but he was one of the greatest french comedians and the french version is also absolutely hilarious. Don't know if the french movies are dubbed in english, but Funes' movies are absolutely classic in Europe and very funny, especially the Gendarme (1964) and my personal all time favourite "Delusions of Grandeur" (1971). Even you might not react to those, maybe check them out, really, really funny with the 60/70s flair.

Great reaction! Legend is a Tim Curry, Tom Cruise movie you could watch. And What's Up Doc? is a screwball comedy that also has a bag mix-up theme & it's hilarious. Made by Peter Bogdonavich in the early 70s. Can't help thinking of it whenever I watch Oscar.

Oscar is always a fun movie to watch. It's like Clue with a similar wit and fast pace. Hope you two get a chance to watch "Over the Top" someday. It's another fun Stallone movie and definitely a classic example of an 80s B-Movie. Probably the most intense movie about arm wrestling ever made.

I went to see this movie alone because all my friends (and family) said "Not another shitty Stallone movie". I was so happy that I saw it and went home laughing. Many of my mates have seen it since and have also been 'converted'.

Oh yeah, Mr. Vendetti's manicurist at the beginning is Arleen Sorkin. If her voice sounds vaguely familiar, it's because she's most famous for doing the voice of Harley Quinn in Batman: The Animated Series and most of the DCAU. And Anthony's pay of $400/mo in 1931 dollars would be $7,800/mo today, or $93k/yr. $1400/mo would be $27k/mo or $327k/yr. $50,000 in 1931 dollars would be close to a million ($974k) today.

Definitely an underrated comedy, and one of Sly's most underrated performances. He has brilliant comedic timing. As for the story, it all feels like it could easily have been a stageplay, like a classic, old-school farce. I believe this was also inspired by a French movie from 1967, which also accounts for the "old-fashioned" comedy feel (I'm talking style of humor, not the fact that this is a period piece, but that fits too). A while back, when you uploaded your "My Cousin Vinny" reaction, I said that it's for some reason one of my go-to movies every now and then. It's the same with "Oscar." I love action and horror and sci-fi etc., but I guess I have an inner old dude that enjoys those more wholesome comedy moments too haha

This is a remake of the french movie Oscar (1967) with Louis de Funès. As a fan of De Funès I was reluctant to see a version with Stallone at first, and I was very surprised how Stallone managed to make something so different, yet so faithfull to the original film, and at the same time being so funny. THIS, is how you do a remake, love this movie. You should try the original movie tho, De Funès is a blast of comedy genius.
