This short audio clip is important because it features the new Peterson Trio with Louis Hayes on drums, coming in after Ed Thigpen left the Trio after six and a half jear since 1959. Louis stayed with Oscar for two years, until July 1967, and played with Ray Brown in the years 1965/66, then with Sam Jones 1966/67, his former colleague from the famous Cannonball Adderley quintet. Louis came later back in 1971 for MPS recordings. Prof. Dan Morgenstern wrote about Newport in Down Beat of August 12, p.25: "I mention Oscar's brief but brilliant Sunday night set. The Trio had only some twenty minutes to play, but made every second count. New drummer Louis Hayes seemed to fit like a veteran Peterson team-member". Amen! Ray Brown is from Pittsburg not Detroit. Announcer didn't do his due diligence.
