So I woke up to find tons of comments (and some conspiracy theories?) about not mentioning the John Cena bit. I thought it was fine, just not one of my favorite bits of the night. I actually did record something about it but I was so "eh" on it that I didn't even think it was interesting enough to include. I'm glad lots of you enjoyed it, just wasn't my cup of tea. But yes, I did, in fact, see John Cena.

As someone who knows nothing about celebrity drama, I thought that segment was gross and weird, especially as the last thing they showed in the show. It seems like both the drama and that bit were desperate attempts to get people to tweet about it. I am Japanese 日本人です We celebrate 2 wins for the first time in 15 years (since "Departures" and "The House of Small Cubes" in 2008) Most of you must be wondering why "Godzilla Minus One" was not the Japanese submition of International film. "Godzilla Minus One" was not that successful in Japan for a Godzilla film, and director Takashi Yamazaki is like Japanese Michael Bay, who started his career as a VFX guy. On the other hand, everyone thought famous Wim Wender's film was more Oscar-like especially after it won Cannes for the best actor. This is why it was a huge surprise that "Godzilla Minus One" was very successful both commercially and critically overseas. At Japanese Academy awards of the last week, which nobody even in Japan cares, "Godzilla" sweeped 8 categories including the best picture, while "Perfect Days" got 2 wins for the best director and best actor. But it was of course too late for the Oscar international film. In Japan, every one predicted "Godzilla" and "The Boy and the Heron" win Producer Toshio Suzuki just revealed at a press conference that even though Hayao Miyazaki was pretending he did not care about the awards, he was waiting at his atelier the good news, Ghibli staff was watching the show and started to clap as soon as they heard the "The" of "The Boy and the Heron", And Suzuki ordered 3 Oscar statue for himself, Miyazaki, and to show off. Also, everyone, do not forget that today is March 11th, 13 years after the Great East Japan Earthquake.

This was fascinating to read, thank you so much for your breakdown and insight! I loved Godzilla and how it balanced the creature and its time period, while I was (sadly) disappointed in Boy and the Heron; it just felt like Studio Ghibli was going through the motions on it :/ I do hope this leads to seeing more Japanese features here- we do get a lot but you still have to hunt around and drive out of the major city area to find outside programming for foreign films. My theatre area is featuring more Indian and Nigerian films which is great, but I also loved Japanese, Korean, and Pacific Islander storytelling the most 💜

To be honest I was a bit disappointed by Boy and thr Heron winning. While Miyazaki absolutely deserves an Oscar, I'd like it to be for his best work. Not for a "lesser" one when there are better competitors in the race. Just feels unfair to me.

Dan had it absolutely right here. In Memoriam should be somber, not flashy. The dancing honestly came across as a parody. I'm old enough that I remember "The Running Man" with Arnold Schwarzenegger, and in that film - a satire of our media consumption more than 35 years ago now - they had a dance number to remember their fallen Stalkers. The In Memoriam needs to go back to what it was when I was a kid: A black screen with white text names and a photo. Maybe - MAYBE - a short snippet of an iconic performance (Like Michael Gambon as Dumbledore, for example). But stop making it a show-within-a-show.

Showing the screens from far away so you could barely see them and constantly moving the screens to a different area on the stage was stupid. I'm so obsessed how Al Pacino announced the winner, it couldn't have been more anti climatic than it actually is. Bro came to the stage, say a few words in a drunken way, didn't bother to introduce the nominees first, opened the envelope, "My eyes see Oppenheimer", music started as he was about the say the producer's name, and he said "What happened?" My god, I love that man 😂😂

Per Al Pacino: “There seems to be some controversy about my not mentioning every film by name last night before announcing the best picture award. I just want to be clear it was not my intention to omit them, rather a choice by the producers not to have them said again since they were highlighted individually throughout the ceremony,” he said in a statement. “I was honored to be a part of the evening and chose to follow the way they wished for this award to be presented.”

I was afraid that they’d do something similarly disappointing for I’m Just Ken. THIS IS HOW you do a live performance at the Oscars. If I had one recommendation to the producers of the Academy award ceremonies, it would be this… Your main audience is the television audience. Not the in-house audience in the auditorium. That’s why I think all focus should be given to clips of the movie, snippets of individual performances, a little bit of cinematic background, as to why these particular technical categories are so important to the filmmaking process. In other words, use the ceremony as a way of reach out to a captive audience, and bring them into the process by showing them the cinema elements that are being celebrated instead of the onstage elements that don’t have the same impact as they would to those in the auditorium

Actually, is that assumption true? No offence intended to you or others mentioning points like that, but when a showrunner is appointed, who is their priority audience: the people in the room or the millions watching from afar? This is something that kinda comes up in many facets of Oscars discussions, because I don't think the answer is weighted towards the latter as much as people initially think: at the end of the day these are just astoundingly promoted inner-industry awards, voted by industry members for industry members, so why should the priority for framing inherently not be on those industry members sitting in the room? IDK, I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it myself, and suspect it's a tightrope the Academy struggles with.
