This video is part of a series of short documentary films about Oscar Winning Women for the Best Actress category. I have titled this series as “Oscars Leading Ladies,” as it follows a chronology of female actresses who have received the honour.
We briefly dive into each actresses unique journey to success in Hollywood and decide what made them so iconic. Not only do we experience the colorful lives of these wonderful women, but we but we get to time travel all the way back to Hollywood starting in 1929 (when the first Oscar was awarded to a female lead) up to present day.

Nobody should ever play Nurse Ratched again, Fletcher was and always will be the best for that role. I saw that there is a TV show called Ratched ? I didn't even bother to watch it as no one can compare to Louise's role. Great job on the video.

I’m gonna have to agree with you on that! The show basically takes a whole different angle to the character. It’s quite good.

No Star Trek DS9 mention? She was amazing as Kai Wynn and she was on all seven seasons of the show as one of the main villains. LOVED her in that as well as Brainstorm. Never seen a more realistic death (heart attack) scene than in Brainstorm. Chilling and so real.

Something weird happened after I saw One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, my mind refuses to believe that Louise Fletcher is a real person/an actress. In my mind Nurse Ratched is absolutely real in her own right!

Nice video. I have previously seen the clip of her winning the Oscar. It was amazing how light & charming she is in real life when her characters can be hard as nails. I loved her in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. There she played the conniving Kai Winn. It was a supporting role but every moment she was on screen was pure gold.

She also played a good Mother of one of the fighters on the mid eighties film -The Best of The Best- good film.

First time I've heard that Anne Bancroft turned the role down for the role being anti-feminist. The original book and screenplay can be seen that way, but the role of Nurse Ratched? Anyway in case anyone was wondering besides Bancroft here are the other ladies offered the role and they all turned it down: Ellen Burstyn, Colleen Dewhurst, Faye Dunaway, Jane Fonda, Audrey Hepburn, Angela Lansbury, Shirley MacLaine, Jeanne Moreau & Geraldine Page. Lily Tomlin accepted the role and then backed down to work on "Nashville" instead. Interestingly enough that role of a woman raising deaf children was supposed to be played by Fletcher. The role of Ratched was a supporting one for sure my guess is maybe some of those ladies said no because of that or schedules or in the case of Fonda it didn't fit in with her political activism at the time. That's a guess on my part since I've heard other times Fonda turned various roles down for that reason. Patricia Neal is the only prominent actress I've come across besides Tomlin that was interested in the role. I don't think Neal was considered for it though.

I saw the movie just recently.. I dont see nurse ratched as this evil monster.. She has very strikt rules for child like behaving men.. What should she do when one new patient was clearly provoking her and bringing chaos to the entire group? She had to respond in some way.. She also never screamed, always staid professional.. I like nurse ratched.. A true pro

You should sit down and analyze the character, she is pure evil, and because of that passive-aggressive attitude, one might think that she is just someone very professional and she is so bad, that even one as a spectator becomes a victim of her manipulation, that's why Fletcher's performance is sencional, because she is the "personified Devil", which at some point you "come to love"
