The craft of acting requires a boatload of talent and luck, but presence and charisma also go a long way. Acclaimed actor John Cazale barely had any lines in 1975’s Dog Day Afternoon alongside Al Pacino, but displayed a clinic in how to give a compelling performance without saying much.
Acting is behavior and compelling behavior and presence don’t necessarily mean being the loudest in the room or scene. There are actors who barely had more than two scenes in a movie and still managed to have their presence felt.
The great actors shine on camera whether they are the lead or a supporting cast member. They play their part convincingly no matter how large or small the role, and are sometimes bestowed their industry's highest honor for it. Here are actors who won Oscars with less than 20 minutes of screen time.

Many people are glad that Anthony Hopkins won for his performance in Silence of the Lambs but are disappointed that it was for Best Lead Actor rather than Supporting Actor. I felt his presence and weight throughout the movie even though he technically had scant screen time, so I'd say the title of Leading Role also belongs to him.

It's not about the amount of screen time a person gets. It's about the performance and it's impact on the movie. The actor made sure that the scenes he/she was in,he/she totally stole them and the scenes were dominated by them. That's why viola Davis was nominated for being in a movie for like 11 minutes.

I understand that, but there are times when someone is nominated for a performance where it feels more like a cameo than a lead/supporting performance. Perfect example this year with Judd Hirsch in The Fabelmans. I think the nomination should have gone to Paul Dano's performance in the movie since his presence in the film is bigger than Hirsch's.

Correction: per IMDb trivia. Anthony Hopkins' screentime is kind of a myth. He has a bit more screentime than many realize. "With twenty-four minutes and fifty-two seconds of screen time, Sir Anthony Hopkins' performance in this movie is the second shortest to ever win an Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role, with David Niven in Separate Tables (1958) beating him, at twenty-three minutes and thirty-nine seconds."

Out of curiosity, what is the typical amount of screen time for a lead actor, particularly in films with larger or, better yet, ensemble casts? Obviously, there will be some complete outliers, such as James Franco in 127 Hours, or Ellen Page/Patrick Wilson in Hard Candy, or any other film centered around just one or two characters. (I know I'm missing some other fine examples, those are just the ones off the top of my head.) And I did find a graphic of Pulp Fiction revealing John Travolta appeared in maybe half the movie's run time. Just wasn't sure if anyone had compiled any large-scale data on the subject. I only ask because while an 15-minute appearance almost sounds like a cameo, it might not be THAT much less than what a lead actor often gets in a film - especially ensemble pictures like Network.
@beachstreet101
@beachstreet101 5 жыл бұрын
That’s a great question. Typically a lead actor in a movie they’re headlining will have anywhere from 60-85 minutes of screen time. So they are in it quite a bit.
@6thwilbury2331
@6thwilbury2331 5 жыл бұрын
@@beachstreet101 Wow, I would never guess it was so high but I suppose that's still "only" about half the movie. Interesting! That said, one of these days, I should measure such things for ensemble movies with more multiple story lines, like The Big Short, Traffic or Love Actually.

@@griz312 Jessica Beil could never have pulled off either roll. She does well when her roll doesn't require emotion or at least minimal.
