Today we're sharing our eventful ferry ride from Fukuoka, Japan to Busan, South Korea. When booking our Japan trip, it was way cheaper to fly home from Seoul than from Tokyo, so we decided to end our trip with a few days in Busan and Seoul. Rather than flying from the south of Japan to Korea, we opted to try a rare international mode of transport: hopping on a boat!
This was only our fourth time ever taking an international boat ride although we've been to 100 countries, which speaks to how rare this mode of transport is between countries!
We are Oskar and Dan, and we believe that anyone regardless who they are deserves to live their wildest dreams! We started our trip in the Keihanshin region, which is Japan's second largest metropolitan area after Tokyo, made up of the cities Osaka, Kobe, Kyoto, Nara, and other smaller ones. After eight days around this region, we hopped on the Shinkansen bullet train twice, first to Hiroshima and then to Fukuoka. From there, we took a boat to Busan, South Korea (we were SO excited about this ferry ride between Japan and Korea!) before catching a train to Seoul and flying home from there!

It is excited to see familiar places in your review. I often enjoy one day trip to Fukuoka from Seoul, if the ticket price is under 100 dollar. Since FUK is so closed to main Hakata area, I can go there by 4 hours and half door to door. That jet foil ship, although it is faster than big size ship, tends to be turbulent

Bummer that you got sea sick. It looked like such a fantastic journey, otherwise. I love ferries for the ride - even the Staten Island Ferry. It almost always means an exotic destination in store. Not necessarily Staten Island. Your last day in Japan was also inspiring and the quality of your videos is amazing!

Counterintuitively, when you're in choppy waters and feeling seasick, the best thing to do is actually to go up on deck! When I took a ferry from Sendai to Hokkaido, that's what I did, and my seasickness almost instantly vanished. Something about the wind and fresh air helps counterbalance your stomach tumbling every which way, somehow or another. May be something to try next time around!

Wow COOL VIDEO! Fukuoka is chill. Jazzy turtles! I think that lady wants to taste your tofu. Interesting shoe washing machine … ?!?! I appreciate that you show new ways of traveling even if it wasn’t smooth sailing to Busan. So sorry about your seasickness. The Queen Beetle is big!. I think I would enjoy it because I am always up for a long ferry ride.

Next time when you get sea sick, go to the middle of the ship and go outside this will help. You were on the front of the ship which is the worst place to be

@@OskarandDan Alternatively you could try walking around. I find walking at least helps with the idea of you are moving and your ear says you are moving, so it sort of matches. I used to always make sure I did not eat when I was going on a boat haha.

@@OskarandDan i think you're in the upper deck affect the situationl too since the higher you're on the boat the more swayed you get. Have you tried to go to lower deck?

1:10 The Green seats are more like business class seats rather than first class; some Shinkansen services do offer first class options which are quite expensive, though it’s still cheaper than some economy class flights.

My partner and I were supposed to ride this ferry in March, but he got food poisoning the night before in Fukuoka so we chose to skip the ferry and stay an extra day in Japan and then just took a flight to Korea a day late. We were sooo disappointed but now looks like it was a blessing in disguise.

Hey Boys,OMG I empathise with you,I love the idea of being out on the water,I love island hopping round the Agean & spent 2 months sailing along the whole coast of Oman assisting a cartographer when I was 19. But,I can remember the days of going to France from England by ferry! The channel can be surprisingly rough & though it was a way cheaper option than flying there were trips where I wanted to die,the last one I took no one could stand up & I think everyone must have thrown up! The concept of first class didn't exist,the Japanese definitely know how to do it in style(colour choice?). Looking forward to your next video as ever; very best wishes to you&yours1❤️💯💙💙👌👋⭐️'s💯✌️

Take heart guys, my husband used to sail professionally and lived on a boat for years. We recently took the ferry from Belfast to Scotland and he was so seasick and had never been seasick before. It just happens.

Looking forward to take the Fukuoka-Busan trip one day But yeah I did the Baltic Sea Sweden-Denmark/Sweden-Finland/Sweden-Estonia/Finland-Estonia/Finland-Russia/Denmark-Germany/Denmark-Norway/Denmark-Poland/France-GB/GB-Ireland without a prop on many occasions. But taking the boat Rhodes -Crete, Greece I woke up feeling seasick. So just be prepared for open sea trips

I took both ordinary and high speed boat. I preferred an ordinary one which is slow and less expensive. The service is, leaving Shimonoseki in the evening, arriving at Busan in the morning of following day.

Very unfortunate that you both got sea sick. I've always wanted to do The Beetle ferry but haven't done so yet. I did the Jeju Island to Mokpo ferry last month which was 5 hours and it was a great ride.

I know an area in Kagoshima is related to Perth so it is probably what you felt in Fukuoka. Perth and Italy have a history in southern Japan. I tasted some really good italian food there.

I’m an ex-cruise ship musician and if you ever get sea sick again, ask the bartender for ginger ale and bitters. It truly works-settles your stomach quickly. Also, eating dry crackers helps. Cheers!

p.s. in pure nautical terms, you were on a ship, not a boat. No trying to be the Word Police, just might be useful to know for the future. The simplest distinction is this: you can fit a boat on a ship, but you can’t fit a ship on a boat❤

Love this review. If you can handle it try the ferry between the Netherlands and England. Always wondered how it felt. I did take the ferries between HK and Macau. It was a very stable and fast hydrofoil. Also the ferries from Washington state to the various islands like Friday Island and Victoria island.

after sailing on terrible waters throughout the Carribean I swear by sea bands; I sailed in catamorans and these bands for my wrist saved me ; others were throwing up over the rails while I was cooking and enjoying the ride.

I cannot believe anyone could have been seasick from such a smooth ride. Try 8 metre waves in an open ocean, with the hull thudding into each wave for 24 hours! I am one of those lucky people that does not get seasick, and will be taking this trip in a few months. So was really good to see how roomy and comfortable everything was.

If you get sea sick you have to avoid ferries, even medication does not help. I passed the ultimate test on a trip across the English Channel when everybody on the ferry was vomiting and I enjoyed my fish‘n chips 😀😀😀😀😀

I have been dreaming of going to Japan for a long time now. Every year I look up flights but get intimidated by the fact that I can't even read their language. However, one of these years I have to just get over myself. It seems to be very much worth a visit. By the way, I have never been a friend of ferry boats. I have more faith in planes than those boats.

Don’t put off the things you want to do, you never know what tomorrow will bring. I went to Tokyo on a whim back in 2015. I don’t know any Japanese either, and it was absolutely fine. The people are so helpful, and Google Maps & Google Translate help too. The trains all had signs that showed the stops in both Japanese & English. It was one of my most favorite trips. Just do it!

Don't let not knowing the language stop you, it has minimal impact on visiting Japan as a tourist. As said above, trains etc. are all in English so there is no problem getting around. Just learn "thank you" in Japanese and Google Translate works for anything else you need to translate.

Have to take this trip in a couple of months & saw that for Tue - Thu departures the cheapest ticket is just ¥4000 (while the slower Camilla ferry I have taken before the other way) charges ¥9000. Easy decision then 😊.

As a kid I crossed the Atlantic Ocean from NYC to Bremerhaven and was seasick about half the journey 🤢🤮Ahead of the journey I was the loudest in my family saying „I’m not going to get seasick!“ Now, over 50 years later, I remember the nice parts of the trip like meeting George Peppard on board.

Many years ago, when I visited Hong Kong, the hydrofoils were all booked, so to get to Macao, I took a jet-cat(amaran). I survived by the window, focusing on the islands we passed, since they were just sitting there, very stable, while we were floating up and down. Many of the Chinese people in the middle of the boat were throwing up in the barf bags in front of each seat. I understand there are now new options, including a bus service. Yes, the worst thing is floating up and down. I'll take bouncy turbulence on a plane any day, as long as my seat mate doesn't fall asleep with a full glass of Coke or cup of tea or coffee on their tray table. Of course, given the right air pocket, the plane can fall and get lifted up the same way as you feel dealing with waves on a boat. I think there are larger ferries between Japan and Korea that are not as affected by the waves because of their size and weight.

I've done two round-trips on that ferry. Luckily, the waves weren't too bad when I traveled, and my strategy was to stay in my seat and close my eyes for most of the journey. If you do get sea-sick, then, yes, you'd probably be better flying. Also, the ferry ticket is much more expensive if you buy it in Japan.

@@BlueJohnXD There might be some online agents that can offer it less expensively, but I'm still sure you'll be paying a higher fare to start the ferry trip from Japan. The Japan-priced fare used to be double that of the Korean-priced fare, but Korea's prices have increased a lot in the last few years, so there might not be so much difference in the pricing any more. I guess you'll only know once you start searching for ticket agents. There's also the Camelia ferry. That goes overnight, and I haven't taken that one, as it seems ridiculously slow compared to the Beetle.

It was like watching one of those 'Inspired by true events' movies when you know something bad is going to happen while the characters are so happy and excited 😀. I get seasick A LOT so I am definitely not going to take that ferry. I took an international ferry only a few times. From HKG to Macau (pointless now that there's a bridge) and from Sardinia to Corsica (100% worth it), and from France to the UK back in the 90s.

I'll watch the rest of the vid but paused at 0:36 to ask why you think going by boat is, "A very rare mode of travel between two different countries"? It's actually very common! Italy, eg, has ferry links with Albania, Algeria, France, Greece, Croatia, Malta, Morocco, Montenegro, Slovenia, Spain and Tunisia.

They are basically like trains/busses in our region, usually sea is calm especially now, took it yesterday, it is a good experience… if seas… or the sea is calm, usually it is though

Take the regular hydrofoil Beetle Ship. We traveled by ship, it was great.　　The Quen Beetle is not a hydrofoil, its a Trimaran.

Hey Oskar and Dan. I watched your video last year after booking tickets on the Queen Beetle from Fukuoka to Busan so your insights and experience really helped us to prepare. Like you this was the absolute highlight of the trip for my husband, daughter and I but sadly for them it turned really bad. The crossing was probably 5 times worse than yours. After the initial 30 mins they both ended up in the respective rest rooms and that’s where they stayed until we docked. They weren’t the only ones. The restrooms were full of sick people. Sounds like in the men’s room people were throwing up everywhere and my husband sick as he was, was handing out sick bags and wet wipes to poor sick souls. In the ladies there was less drama but still a constant stream of throwing up and general sea sick people. The poor staff who had to clean up! But maybe as we travelled on 31 Dec, the sea was restless due to the 1 Jan earthquake that was brewing. Who knows but I thought I’d just say that you’re right about the crossing. People should do it but be really prepared that it gets choppy. Happy travels. 😊

Hello guys! I'm planning on riding the jerry to Busan later this year. It's nice to see that the immigration process is very similar to the one in an airport. I would like to ask you guys something about arriving in Japan, did you get any problems because you were leaving by boat? Did you already had your boat tickets before arriving in Japan? I've heard in the past that when arriving in Asian countries, you should have a departure flight, but mine is in Seol. Btw y'all so cute 😊.

Japan usually isn't too strict about that, but it depends on your nationality! We didn't have to show our ferry tickets. Thank you🥰

This video made me think, if I genuinely don't have sea sickness or have I just not met some really rough seas yet? I've been on some really small boats (just two decks) for a couple of days, I've taken sone ferries but that's it. And the waves didn't look to terrible in this video. I really don't know what to think.

I took the ferry on 4th april 2024... 15:40 "the waves were absolutely crazy" can't really see it in your video... it seems my trip had MONSTER waves compared to what i see here ;) forecast said 1,5m to 2m waves... outside the window looked like 2m to 3m, if not more! 50% of the passengers were vomiting, the ferry kept jump-flying over the waves. For me, personally, it was an amazing ride, loved every second of it.

Lol i wouldn't say it's a very rare mode of travel between two countries! Im a seafarer, best thing if you take another ferry and worried about getting sea sick, eat plenty of food before and snack during even if you don't feel like it.
