Interesting additions to the origin of the names of days. The days used to be dedicated primarily to gods. Since both English and German are Germanic languages, the influence of Germanic gods is very strong here. Among the Germanic tribes, Monday was dedicated to the lunar giant Mani, so the day was "manetac" - at some point this became Mondtag or Montag, or in English moonday -> monday. Tuesday was for the god Tyr (also called Ziu), god of war, but patron of the Thing, the people's and court assembly. The Thing became the "Dien" and thus became Dienstag. In English, the other name of Tyr, Ziu, prevailed, hence tuesday. Wednesday is based on the god Odin, who was called Wodan in large parts of Germania. Wodantag became Wednesday. Among the Germans, the Christians were stronger and replaced Wodantag with Mittwoch (Mitte der Woche - the middle of the week). Donnerstag/Thursday is simple - Thor, god of thunder (Donner in german) - Thor became Thur, Donner (Donar was another name for Thor) remained in German. Friday/Freitag comes from the goddess Freya. Saturday is unique: here the English speakers remained faithful to the Roman gods: Saturn's day became Saturnday -> Saturday the rest of the Germanic languages used the Jewish word Sabbat, which eventually became Samstag in German. Sunday - Germanic goddess Sunna, goddess of the sun became Sonnentag, i.e. Sonntag or Sunday Hope that helps
