Osmosis is a biological and physical process that involves the movement of solvent molecules (usually water) across a semi-permeable membrane from an area of lower solute concentration to an area of higher solute concentration. In other words, osmosis is the spontaneous movement of water molecules from a region of lower solute concentration to a region of higher solute concentration, through a selectively permeable membrane.
The process of osmosis is driven by the desire to equalize the concentration of solutes on both sides of the membrane, a concept known as achieving osmotic equilibrium. The solute concentration is expressed in terms of osmolarity, which is the measure of the number of osmoles (the unit of measurement for the number of particles in a solution) of solute per liter of solution.
During osmosis, water molecules move across the membrane through special protein channels called aquaporins. These channels allow water to pass through while preventing the passage of larger solute molecules. As water moves from an area of lower solute concentration to an area of higher solute concentration, it effectively dilutes the solution on the side with higher concentration, resulting in the flow of water towards the more concentrated solution.
Osmosis plays a crucial role in various biological processes. It is involved in the uptake of water and nutrients by plant roots, the regulation of water balance in animal cells, and the reabsorption of water in the kidneys. It also has practical applications, such as water purification through reverse osmosis, a process that uses a semi-permeable membrane to remove impurities from water by applying external pressure to overcome the osmotic pressure.
We will learn the process of osmosis practically with the potato osmosis experiment. Let's see how to make the potato osmoscope and use it to show the process of osmosis.

Nice. but (1) How do I know the potato is a "semi-permeable membrane"? Compare to a coffee filter. (2) How do the hypotonic water molecules know the status of the hypertonic side, or is it a condition at the border?
