The Osprey Daylite Plus is a versatile backpack that delivers a comfortable carry-we just wish the side water bottle pockets were a bit more secure. View Our Full Review: packhacker.com/travel-gear/os...

In this review, we’ll be taking a look at the Daylite Plus, a 20-liter daypack from world-renowned outdoor gear specialists, Osprey. After reviewing the original Daylite-which is smaller, at 13 liters-one of our cons was the lack of a padded laptop sleeve. So, after seeing this larger model had one, along with a few other differences, we just had to check it out.
At the time of this review, we’ve been testing the Osprey Daylite Plus for just over two months. During this time it’s seen use as a tech daypack on trips to the coffee house in the UK, and it’s even come along with us on a one month trip to Porto, Portugal.
The Osprey Daylite Plus is a versatile daypack with a comfortable carry that’s just as suited to the outdoors as it is a coworking space. The quick-grab pockets are great, and while the laptop sleeve isn’t perfect, we like that it has one. It’s a shame the water bottle pockets aren't more secure, and the front nylon is likely to scuff, but this is still a nifty daypack at a reasonable price that’s worth considering.

I have this pack and only use it as a small daypack when I travel and will put a small water bottle in the middle expanded area. I have rarely used the side mesh pockets.

Important. I have 2 kids, so, I usually keep one bottle for each of them on each side & carry my bottle internally in the bag. So if the bottles fall out of the pockets it would be a pain & render them useless.

This has been my everyday bag for over two years now. It goes with me on day hikes, around town, as a personal item compliment to a roller carry-on, and even stuffed full with packing cubes for multi-day travel on budget airlines when I don't want to pay any bag fees. It has worked pretty much flawlessly 12,000ft up in the Rockies, on the streets of London, and on the beach in Puerto Rico. If you value lightweight above all and don't need endless high-end features then for the money this is a quality versatile bag. What they did not mention in the video is that the back panel can be removed and put back easily which allows you to roll the bag up quite small, making it easy to stuff into a larger bag for travel if for some reason packing the bag flat won't work. I have had to do this before so I know it works. Considering how much versatility I need from an everyday bag, as well as accommodate my DSLR and 2 lenses during travel and day hikes, I took the leap and recently purchased the Peak Design everyday 20L that provides quick camera access on the go and should last me a long time. Osprey says this is 20L but I find that subjective and seems to take into account every pocket and space available like the front stuff pocket held by the compression straps. When compared to other 20L bags it seems smaller and thinner. What you really have is something that feels more like 15L plus 5L of somewhat usable space around the bag. Not great for maximizing interior space but keeps the bag streamlined and feeling thin on your back. Overall for the price and versatility, it's a solid "B-B+" backpack in my opinion.

Hey Matt - wow you've really put the Daylite Plus through some testing. Thanks for sharing, we love to hear other experiences with the packs we've reviewed. It's great to hear that you've been able to adapt and find a way to make this pack work so well for you! How are you getting on with the Peak Design Everyday Backpack 20L? - Rebecca
@mattdesocio2371
@mattdesocio2371 5 жыл бұрын
@@PackHacker The Everyday 20L is the most impressive and well thought out non-electronic item I own. At the price it is not for everyone, but if you use a backpack every day it makes sense to me to invest in something that works well for your need and will last for years to come. It is at least 3x as heavy as the Daylite Plus though, so for a demanding day hike with no camera gear, I will still use my Osprey to carry a rain shell, water, and snacks. Never underestimate the joy of only having a couple pounds on your back during a long day.

@@slashnagy6 Ya it has held up really well. The upper front pocket zipper has started becoming difficult but given the abuse I have put it through with sand and salt water it’s a really good basic backpack for the price.

Very honest review. I've used this pack for 5 years now and the pros and cons are accurate. The bottle pockets are useless for bottles, I instead use carabiners or put it in the middle "pocket." I have found that the side pockets are fine for small things like protein bars, tissues, etc., and in combination with the straps to hold larger things like umbrellas or hiking poles.

I use a Sigg water bottle that has a loop top, then use a carabiner clipped on to the compression strap, your water bottle can’t fall out of the pockets with that set up. Anyway I think you are supposed to use Osprey hydraulics bladder with this pack, that solves the water problem if you don’t mind paying 30 quid for it.

Also. wanted to say, really like the front stretchy pocket. I have the regular Daylite, which is a terrific day pack and my go to. Also use on trips, esp if hiking is planned. That pocket would be great for a light jacket, almost makes me want to upgrade. Will be looking for REI sales (but I have an REI Trail25, might review that as well. I'm inclined to think it would be good very short plane trips--1-3 days (no suits or anything).

@@PackHacker, The REI Trail 25 is a boxy shaped day pack (lightweight at around a pound). Clam shell design and lots of pockets and compartments, which would make traveling (rather short trips) easier. I wouldn't take it for a week, but if i had a short trip (1-3 days) that I wanted to take I would consider it. I have not used in this way but was going to but I cancelled the trip. You could stick a packing cube in there for clothes-- voila compartments for that!

If you do not use the external bladder, buyers should be aware of a few things. After fairly extensive use for more than a year, the external bladder clip starts to wear through the pack lining. I never use the bladder, so the clip hangs loosely and has begun to dig small holes and various points of wear on my pack. I love this pack and I wish I would've known that before because I would've just cut it off to prevent this since I never use bladders anyway. I hope this info is of use to someone. This is why long term pack reviews are important.

What nobody is mentioning in these Osprey daylite plus reviews is the sweat factor on your back. Hiked for 6 hours yesterday. Conditions were clear, warm and dry. Temperature was 75 F/23C. My back was completely drenched with sweat with this pack. Yes, it is a very comfortable pack with ample space for your stuff. Osprey has had a lot of time to fix these packs. They do not want to fix the water bottle pockets, and, therefore, I would look elsewhere. Also, Osprey has a lot of colors, but they too are a disappointment. Lastly, I feel Ospreys' customer service has been lacking as of late.

I have to admit i was disappointed with that bag. I am puzzled about the back panel that is quite rigid in a wrong way: on a hike it's starting to be really annoying because you got the feeling to have a kind of "bar" pressing against your lower back. The removable belt makes it worse as the annoyance translate into a pain, especially if you got a laptop in the bag. Impossible to put the bag "higher" on the back because the "handle" then hit the neck. Ventilation is also pretty bad for a "sport" activity. I ended up removing that back panel (that can be removed easily, good point) and use the backpack only as a spare one for a main bag. As a bag you use for city only (no laptop), it's acceptable. As a bag for hike (forest/mountain), it's a no go for me, better focus on a more expensive bag with a far better panel.

looks good, but does have lockable zippers

Hey Daniel - the zippers aren't lockable, but the compression straps do go over the top of the zippers. While this doesn't make it impossible to open, it does offer a little extra protection. Hope this helps! - Rebecca

You guys have GOT to invest in mics... Or better ones if you have them.

Any suggestions S_P? We're running with Rode VideoMic Pro's at the moment, but we're always looking to improve our production quality. - Nathan

Pack Hacker I’ll probably be wrong, but I’d guess that the pro mics are mounted on the camera itself and not on a boom? On the videos done in this pink room the vocal audio always sounds hollow or echoey. In contrast, the videos with Tom where he uses a lap mic they sound fine, along with most of the ones he doesn’t. My guess is that the mic was positioned closer. All other aspects are great, but inconsistent audio from video to video is kind of a bummer.

One of the most uncomfortable strap systems on any pack I've ever tried. The worst part is the ultra stiff tabs that the waist belt attaches to have very sharp corners that stab you in the back with each step. They Actually scratched my skin thru the t shirt I was wearing, and when I put on a jacket, it worse hole in the fabric on a 2 mile hike.

Do not think this is a good backpack. Prefer German made ones. Greetings from Switzerland.
