Introduction to Osteoarthritis (OA) - Part 1 ...Arthritis is divided into non-inflammatory (such as osteoarthritis), and inflammatory arthritis (such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, sjögren syndrome, gout,...etc).
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a biomechanical degeneration of cartilage and their matrix (combined with growth of bone called subchondral sclerosis). Osteoarthritis is, by far, the most common rheumatological diseases.
Osteoarthritis is the same as degenerative joint disease.
Osteoarthritis is divided into primary (idiopathic) and secondary (2ry to something else such as trauma, congenital anomaly, inflammatory arthritis,...etc).
Osteoarthritis (OA) is characterized by osteophytes (bony projections) in the DIP (Heberden nodes) and PIP (Bouchard nodes).
OA is diagnosed clinically and radiologically (x-ray)...You might need to do some labs to rule out other diseases.

n the past, osteoarthritis (OA) was considered to be simply a degenerative "wear and tear" process and therefore often misnamed as degenerative joint disease. However, the pathogenesis of OA is much more complex than just wear and tear and the term "osteoarthritis," where "-itis" is indicative of an inflammatory process, is indeed correct reference uptodate

I agree. My uncle died aged 89 without ever having suffered from OA, even though he was an active fell walker all his life; whereas many people much younger and far less active than he are diagnosed with the condition. Also, it seems more prevalent in certain families than others, suggesting some genetic predisposition. Furthermore the joints bearing the most weight like the knees are not always the ones to show wear and tear, as in my late mother's case. Cartilage can regenerate, albeit slowly, maybe more so in some than others or perhaps some people just has less to start off with.

I’m 29 & have OA (mono/asymmetrical) somewhere between my shoulder and my arm. I was in the military so that explains my issue. I have a high tolerance for pain but only oxycodone barely helps relieve my shoulder pain. Of course I got prescribed tramadol and some other med that don’t really do anything for me. Keep your head up my OA ppl!!!

great video but I'd like to point out that synovitis is indeed present and strongly associated to OA. the idea that the "itis" part is a misnomer is outdated, and it has been shown that inflammation does indeed play a role in the progression of OA

Primary osteoarthritis is generally a disease of the elderly. That doesn’t mean that young people can’t get it. There are exceptions to every rule, and there is a difference between primary and secondary. I am so sorry that you’re going through this...Keep fighting and don’t give up! I wish you the best!
