Dancers are intensely attuned to their body language and movement, but like any athlete, their injuries can become easy to ignore.
In this video, BalletMet dancer Gabriel shares his story of how The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center's sports medicine team helped him recover from a herniated disc in his back and return to his passion of dancing.

I needed to see this right now, I just got diagnosed by MRI two weeks ago with a herniated disc. I'm am tired of the pain and as such an active person and performer it is killing me being so still. It's good to know that I can overcome this. I needed some inspiration right now, thank you. I need to accept it first and move on an find a way to still do the things I love.

I can really understand the frustration, pain & disappointment everyone must be going through suffering from disc herniation bcoz I myself am suffering from it. Though completely disappointed right now, I just pray and wish for everyone that all of you get well soon and return back to your normal life asap. Touchwood🤞. Just take care of yourself as best as you can. Listen to your body and love yourself at all costs. It's okay to be upset sometimes but never give up. This too shall pass my friends. See it as if God is giving you time to pamper yourself. It's just a phase, just a test and all of you are such fighters💪💪 that you are gonna win this anyhow🤗. I can see that in comment section very well. May all of you be happy & healthy as before. Amen🙏🙏🙏

I have DDD (many worn out discs) and a very severe herniated disc (the disc burst and it is just flat cartilage now. My life changed. Many months of pain, I was not doing well at work and also with my wife things were getting worse: when you are always in pain and can't move well everything becomes a struggle. People don't understand what you go through. They think you just have a bit of back pain. No support. A physiotherapist saved me, but I saved myself because I began working out every day and avoiding dangerous exercises that same PTs kets saying I could do. I still have bad days, but I am doing fairly well. If you stop working out or you do the 'wrong' movements it is going to get much worse.

@@daniaabbasi1241 I am not a physiotherapist, it all depends on your level of fitness. You need to be assessed by a professional."A mild disc bulge since one week" does not make lots of sense. Who told you when your disc began bulging? If you have pain I would avoid lifting heavy weights and I would do side planks, bird dogs, bridges etc.... basic movements to treat lower back pain. Stuff you should always do till you are 100 year old.

I felt very weak and useles even tho i did workout every day and i even build up some musscles( my friends even called me body builder ). I really tried my best. Im guessing that surgery is my only option now. Im very glad that i found this comment because we are like similar age so just if you have some time please describe your rehabilitation process.

I too as a dancer relate to this completely. Over the last 7 years of my dancing journey, I have jumped around from Latin, Bollywood, Hip Hop and then joining a professional team that I can call my family, yet my herniated disc has been putting me through the biggest challenge of my life for the past 3 years. Like he said, some days it is great...and some not so great. I am so glad I found this video I needed this inspiration. I have been lucky, I attend a top Performing Arts School in the UK and my back went whilst training, the physio looked after my back for the first 6 weeks and it wasn't getting any better. So I returned to my home town scared as I had to get treatment. My parents couldn't afford private treatment but my cousin paid for a consultation and I need an MRI scan and he suspects a Prolapsed disc. My mum set me up a fundraising page yesterday and I have 3 donations already. In the meantime, my grandparents are paying for my treatment and I am determined to pay them back. You may ask but you are at Performing Arts School which is normally private, but I have 2 full scholarships, 1 from my College for my fees and another from The Black Heart Foundation for exceptional talent which covers my accommodation. I cannot wait to get back to training, but I also have to be sensible to ensure I get the recovery I need to return.

My training Wilkes is over 3 years with an option to transfer after 2 onto your degree, which I was originally going to do, however I have decided to do final year to complete my professional training then audition for Uni to give my back to fully recovery and to remove the pressure as my first audition was booked with Mountview for the beginning of February which wasn’t going to be possible. @@taywithlove Hey, that's great news! I'm glad you're doing better. My situation is a little different at the moment. I'm currently 26 and I was in a car accident last month in Miami. It was fairly minor in my opinion, but after getting the MRI results back the doctor told me that I had 5 disc herniations. 3 in my cervical and 2 in my lumbar. The good thing is that I don't feel any pain at all, which is why I was so surprised when they told me the results. I will be going to therapy for 10 weeks and the doctor is confident that after that my discs will heal on their own. I'm fairly active since I travel a lot to see different djs play, I also tend to dance until 5-6 am at the club hahah But i hope that I can get better in the next two months. I had a lot of trips planned for this year, but I'm putting everything on hold until I'm done with the 10 weeks of therapy.

Okay. I'm here because I feel absolutely desperate and trapped in my body right now. I used to dance. A lot. I taught ballet, was in pointe shoes, taught jazz and modern, was performing, considering a certain school in New York.... Then one day one of my fellow dancers asked, "What's that sound, Heather?" during one of my grand plié's. A popping, snapping sound I'd grown accustomed to was apparently snapping hip syndrome and I was told to stop doing "turn out," which as you know, means an end to many forms of dance. I began running races, skating, doing martial arts, and... low impact dance anyway (contemporary) because I couldn't help myself. That was just the beginning of my lower body problems. FAST FORWARD twenty years and a sporting accident, and I have several herniated discs, lost the use of my right leg at one point then regained it, had surgery on my lower back, and died during the surgery. Obviously, the death didn't keep. I've gone through extensive physical therapy, I have moderate to severe arthritis, I'm allergic to steroids, I'm on a pain medication regimen, and all I can think about Gabriel - is dancing again. Once the numbness in my right leg (from my initial sporting accident - racquetball, of all things) went completely away, I thought I was in the clear. So I broke out the pointe shoes and was fine on the left - but my right leg gave out intermittently and the fire/ice/lightning threats began once more on the skin of my right leg and all through my right foot. I went back to physical therapy, did all of the core and gluteus and back strengthening exercises religiously, to the point that the physical therapist just shook his head and said, "You have more knots and ropes on your back than I have seen in thirty years, and you're more flexible and strong than anyone I've treated.... I think you should go back for another MRI because I don't know what to do for you now." MRI was just as damning as I knew it would be, which is how I know about the several herniated discs (not to mention huge uterine fibroids that are poking around at my spine). So I just want to know, I guess... what was it EXACTLY that Ohio State Sports Medicine did for you? I mean, what did they do that I haven't done? Do I even have a hope of dancing again?

Mr Thanos whatever you do don’t get epidural steroid injections, stay away from them. They are not safe and they can ruin your life. Consider any other option.

@@danielgutierrez702 why do you say that? What is the risk of danger? I have heard of friends getting the injections :(

DesigningaNewMe they are not FDA approved and with good reason. If a doctor goes just a fraction of a millimeter too deep with that needle your life is over. It can cause serious negative outcomes like paralysis or death. The liquid being around your spinal cord can also trigger an inflammatory response which can give you adhesive arachnoiditis, an incurable disease that causes never ending 10/10 pain.

Anybody else with cervical herniated disc⁉❓❗ I have hernias in C4-C5 and C5-C6 and I feel alone 💔😨 .I am in some Facebook groups but seems that most of people has lumbar hernias instead. I was diagnosed 3 weeks ago and I am waiting for the orthopedist to give me an appointment. Here in Sweden thinkgs with health care are extreamly slow 😢. I am dying in pain now,I can't even work ,I am going through a nightmare. I do physioterapy and it helps to easier the pain just for a couple of hours and just like a 20%.
