Ivan the Crayfish’s crawling along the bank
Catches a fish and brings it to little Ul'yan
Little Ul'yan wolfs down the peppered fish
The landlord sits in the barnyard and screams "I'll whip you!"
They work their fingers to the bone
With a wooden plough and harrow
Mother sold the latter
Didn’t ask much for it
A hoe, a shovel
And a hen
It sits on its roost
Counting its eggs
One, two, three, four
They taught me how to count
But not to read or write
I had to play with dolls
I broke one of my dolls
Mummy gave me a spanking
Dad, dad hit me on the back
Balalaika on the wall
Down the balalaika fell
And hit the pig on its hump

Ребятки... 10 лет как уехал из деревни, но моё сердце до сих пор там... Там рядом с берёзой что возле дома ростёт.. Там за озером где я шампиньоны собирал. Там на поле где я корову забирал из стада.... Там моё детство и юность, до твёрдого комка в горле.... Хочу обратно...

Love from southern USA! My lineage on my maternal grandmothers side is Lithuanian, and even though it’s it’s own culture, I love listening to anything Baltic or from Russia. Folk songs of every culture are beautiful and are something for us all to hang on to so that simple beauty like this doesn’t disappear

Funny, I spent the first twenty years of my life believing that those strange slavic people of the east were my enemies and that there would be a war in which we would all kill each other. Brazilian here. I have never been to Russia, but this video is the perfect depiction of how my dream house would be: in the countryside, with much green around and nice neighbours to live a peaceful life with, enjoying simple things like eating, drinking and laughing together. To all of you who have this sort of life instead of killing yourselves to live in the big cities: you can't imagine how lucky you are.

It’s called “poteshka”, literally “a merry song”, and is a kind of nursery rhyme, one used when playing with little children’s fingers, hands and feet in order to massage it, develop fine motor skills and stimulate reflexes. Стив, мы такие, люди, каи вы. Воспитываем детей и внука. Так-же радуемся природе и пением птиц, ходим на рыбалку. Сажаем на даче помидоры, огурцы, редиску, лук, баклажаны, перец сладкий и горький. Укроп, петрушка, мята. Яблоки, груши, абрикосы. Но мы не фермеры, у нас это происходит вечерами и по выходным утак как у нас есть основная рабрта

Very charming. I'm not Russian but this reminds me of when I was really small at my grandmother's house. It was surrounded by oak trees and backed by a fast flowing creek. I remember always the sounds of the water and the sound of acorns bouncing off of the roof.

I've been listening to a lot of these videos and I'm surprised that the music seems to have some Celtic elements, and some of the instruments look like American Appalachian instruments. The musicians looks like the would fit right in as well, which is fascinating.

@@mrpual49 Russian folk music uses diatonic scale with a hint of pentatonic, that's why it often sounds a bit Celtic :) Also it matches together well, sharing the same scale is like using the same color palette.

The Octava Yo videos remind me of a comment an American journalist made back in the 90s that I've never forgotten. He said when he was working in Russia, he couldn't wait to leave because conditions were so harsh, but when he was home, he couldn't wait to go back because the people were so great. Culture, politics, ethnicity or religion, it doesn't really matter. We all want pretty much the same things. A roof above our heads, someone to lose to at chess, a fireplace to gather wood for, a violin to play and a song to sing. Children to swing and mothers gather their flock away. An angry grandma to chastise us and a field full of stringed instruments. Safety, security and peace. Just add a full belly and we can all agree. This is what we all want and need.
