William SHAKESPEARE (1554 - 1616)
Othello is the story of a cross-cultural romance between the title character, a noble moor who is a general in the Venetian army, and Desdemona, a beautiful and virtuous Venetian lady. The newly-married couple fall prey to the machinations of Iago, Othello's jealous ensign, who plots to destroy their union.

Act IV: Reading Questions 1. After Iago lied and told Othello that Cassio confessed going to bed with Desdemona, what advice does he give the overwhelmed Othello? Iago tells Othello to remain calm and to not get carried away, and to hide and watch when he talks to Cassio to hear what they’re saying. 2. What happens to Othello in Scene 1? How does Iago respond? Iago tells Othello to take it like a man and to stop being so emotional about it. 3. How does Iago trick Othello into thinking Cassio is gloating and bragging about his affair with Desdemona? Iago tricks Othello by mentioning Bianca quietly with Cassio, which makes him look like he’s laughing and bragging about Desdemona without that context. 4. Why is Bianca angry with Cassio? Bianca is angry with Cassio because of the handkerchief that she was asked to copy which she thinks came from another woman. 5. How does Bianca's return with the handkerchief help Iago? This helps Iago because Othello would see the handkerchief and enforce his belief that Desdemona is cheating on him. 6. Why does Othello hit Desdemona? Othello hits Desdemona because he believes Desdemona has just admitted to cheating on him with Cassio in front of him. 7. Who is Lodovico, and why has he come to Venice? Lodovico is Desdemona's cousin, he came to deliver a letter to Othello. 8. What is Lodovico's reaction to Othello's behavior towards Desdemona? How does Iago later explain Othello's behavior to Lodovico? Lodovico reacts by asking if that was really the same Othello who hit Desdemona; Iago tells him that he won’t say whether that was the first or last time he saw Othello hit Desdemona and says it's about normal now. 9. Why does Othello ask Emilia about Cassio's affair with Desdemona, and what is her reply? Othello asked Emilia about the affair because he’s still looking for proof, Emilia says that Desdemona is innocent. 10. How correctly does Othello identify his weakness in Scene 2 ? Othello says that his weakness is being too jealous, while his true weakness is that he’s overly trusting. 11. To whom does Desdemona turn for help after Othello calls her a strumpet? Desdemona turns to Iago. 12. Why does Iago tell Roderigo to kill Cassio? Why does Roderigo consent to think about it? Iago tells Roderigo to kill Cassio in order to keep his hands clean and make killing him(Cassio) easier, Roderigo thinks about it because Iago convinced him that he’d be able to have Desdemona once Cassio is dead. 13. What is the effect of the “Willow Song” and the interruptions to it? The interruptions to the song foreshadow Desdemona's possible death, as her mother died singing it and the song would not leave her head. The interruptions are because of how nervous Desdemona is to see Othello, where she’d stop singing every time she hears something that might be Othello. 14. To what does Emilia attribute the fact that women betray their husbands? Emilia says that women betray their husbands because it is the husbands fault that they did something to make them betray them first. You know I haven’t actually listened to this audiobook, I listened to the long one with all the acts in one, so the voices were quite a jumpscare when I accidentally left the video running
