@@Not_Pie As someone who's been following Minecraft speedrunning for 5 years, I have no idea. Edit: I take that back. It must be a reference to the Four thing that's mentioned toward the end of the "How Speedrunners Cheat" video on this same channel. [If you don't want to go watch it, the claim is that shortly prior to the calculator unban, Four -- a speedrunner and at the time a leaderboard moderator -- completed a PB run with calculator without telling anybody, and submitted it to the leaderboards to be verified (which it was) in an attempt to demonstate that calculators should be unbanned because enforcing a rule against them was impossible.) I didn't know about that and I don't think I have enough context to try to say much about it now.

This video was an abomination when it comes to the political aspects. From getting basic facts wrong, such as Vietnam being "the first war America lost" (this statement is impressive because it is both wrong in the sense that America had lost wars in the past, such as the War of 1812, but also wrong in the sense, that America was never at war with Vietnam), to misunderstandings of historical global events, such as "self-determination" and "autonomy" having nothing to do with Ho Chi Minh's rise, as he was fighting for communism (Democratic Vietnam was setup with the help of America, with a transitory dictatorship, much like Japan, South Korea, and Republic of China had). It's also laughable to think that democracy represents "the rule of all", as no government represents that, due to it being impossible/anarchy.

Problem is that the top runners have an ego to protect, whether many of them want to admit it or not. Giving them an administrative say in a lot of things can benefit from their experience and understanding, yes, but it will almost always be biased toward protecting the conditions that allowed them to gain their top scores and not necessarily always be for the health of the community.

And okay, if it was for games purity's sake, I'd maybe understand, but then SOME would be fine by the top runner votes? "Okay, these textures I don't care, but these I do". Then, to turn around and vote, privately, for an actual mod (which mind you, I agree with) being allowed? And without public input? Yeah, no, good thing I don't run Minecraft. I want to clarify one point about the Minecraft segment that I think was left a little bit unclear. Feinberg's point in that rant wasn't exactly "calculators bad", even though he was against the unban. Rather he was complaining about a lack of action on making a clear ruling either way. What he's referring to with regards to Brentilda's world record is that the Brentilda WR came about at a time when the tradition of timing Minecraft runs based only on in-game time was being increasingly exploited for advantage by various players. A pre-1.9 world record by Silverrruns had already used a kind of pause buffering in order to gain more information than a non-pausing player would have been able to gain in that circumstance and while consuming less in-game time. But it wasn't super detrimental to the flow of the gameplay, and it was a much less popular category, so it didn't get a lot of notice. But everybody who was paying attention was kind of on pins and needles like, what happens when somebody exploits the crap out of untimed pauses for the really popular category, and makes it really obvious, and it's a world record? And then that happened, exactly, with Brentilda's run. It was a mess, and it's still a mess, with KZfaq commenters everywhere still under the impression that pauses in Minecraft Any% speedruns go untimed across the board, even though the rules were changed shortly after that world record (and as a direct response to it), and there have been four world records in the category since then under the new rules. So that's what Feinberg was begging to have happen there. Make some kind of decision regarding the increased use of de facto calculators that were clearly against the spirit of the rules as stated but for some reason were not being treated as such. Pull the calculator bandaid or glue it on, but remove the uncertainty and eliminate the risk that the next world record in the category could be seen as illegitimate by half the community. In the end, as controversial as it was, the decision was made before Cube's world record happened and what Feinberg was worried about didn't happen. Instead all us KZfaq frogs wound up having to defend the decision itself. But that's another story.

I remember those old SDA rules hahahhaha, honestly I kinda liked them. As a moderator honestly some runs people put up are just so bad that they don't even deserve to be called speedruns, I rejected one for that reason but the other mod added them and it's whatever. For larger communities haivng their own website is the way to go. You'll always get better forums, rankings systems, collections of tools etc. Haloruns (and formerly highspeedhalo), goldeneye and dustkid are great examples of this. Regarding rules people can run a game however they want with any proof they want and their achievments are just as real as someone elses, as long as you're honest about what you did. The value you give your runs should be the main point. Leaderboards need standards though, but honestly the point of leaderboards is to foster and document competition. If I had complete control of leaderboard I would allow claimed times without recordings (or any other rules people want), just with a flag for video or not and a filter.

So is the calculator bit for minecraft internal and reading game data or manually punched in by the runner? Most speedrun communities i've seen allow external tools as long as they don't interact with the game itself. Like wind waker 100% has the sploosh kaboom tool that you start when starting the run. It'd be easier if it could automatically start when starting the game but then it'd be interacting with the game. Its only allowed because it does not interact. If you ban external tools at that point you'd also need to ban all notes and any external influence at all. That would be a death sentence for the community since it becomes very hard for new players to overcome the barrier to entry to a lot of longer runs.
@m8ty4u
@m8ty4u Жыл бұрын
There are two main calculators that are allowed by the mods. One of them (used in the earlier versions) does have you manually write your position and angle but the other more popular uses an ingame shortcut that copies your position and angle in a command format (F3+C). The shortcut is a part of the game that can be activated in any situation and in any gamemode and it works like any other copy/paste function. Therefore the calculator works without relying on reading data straight from the game.
@Lmjacks
@Lmjacks Жыл бұрын
minecraft is a pretty unique game due to how constant and significant decision making is, with the speed you make decisions throughout the run being a very real skill. the scope of this video didn’t allow for going into depth about the myriad of tools that were created at that point of the game’s development, with many of those tools undermining various aspects of high level play that were understood to matter at the time. since then, the calculator ban has been lifted and it seems attitudes have largely changed about stronghold calculations being an integral skill for the run. to;dr comparison to a more traditional notes doc doesnt really hold up that well, both due to scope of tool and nature of game
@BlueCyann
@BlueCyann Жыл бұрын
Like the other person said, the player copies the relevant data to clipboard using a vanilla, survival-accessible command (F3+C). The calculator (which is called Ninjabrain bot after its creator) reads the clipboard and performs the calculations on it. It's rather too sophisticated to be easily compared to notes, though, because it's not a direct parallel to what a player does when they're estimating stronghold location manually. Manual methods such as 4-jump estimation or axis calculated work off of triangulation. Throw an eye of ender, measure the angle. Move a ways to the side, do it again. Angle difference and distance moved tell you about how far away the stronghold is. And there are more accurate and less accurate ways of doing this in your head, or with a manageably small spreadsheet. Ninjabrain bot (as well as the gray-area pre-unban methods that Feinberg was touching on in his complaint shown in this video), takes advantage of the rules of Minecraft world generation to go a bit further than a person could ever do on their own, and they don't rely on triangulation. (They can use it to make measurements more accurate when necessary, and in practice a majority of runs using calculator will still throw two eyes, but they are fundamentally single-eye-throw methods.) The bot also incorporates some fairly sophisticated statistical methods to allow the runner to make good decisions about whether or not to throw a second eye, among other things. It's all working off of that same data and that anybody can copy and paste for themselves, but it makes that data do a lot of work. In practice, the difference between using calculator and not using calculator is pretty significant. There is only one person left not using calculator who is widely considered to be a top runner, and that's Couriway. He doesn't do world record attempts anymore as a rule, but from how he performs in the Ranked mod (a 1v1 elo system that came out recently), he's still very good. But he's hanging out around 25th instead of the top 10 he'd probably be otherwise, because he gives up probably a minute per run on average to the calculator. Which is a lot when the entire run is probably only going to be about 12 minutes. Calculator unban changed a lot. (And since you brought it up: ironically, a less well-known Minecraft speedrunning category, All Advancements, does allow direct reading of *some* game files. It's for the specific purpose of serving as a replacement for manual notes, and it's never been controversial as far as I know.)
@BlueCyann
@BlueCyann Жыл бұрын
@@mj-jl5nc Well that's how it was for a while, sort of, but I agree with the mod team on that that it's completely unenforceable as to what kind of calculator you use unless you limit it very strictly to just four functions. (The best methods for triangulation using nothing more than mental math or four function calculators, you had to line up in specific spots and measure certain things to get specific results, so you would have been able to tell from a video whether that's what the player was actually doing.) And for whatever reasons, it was not decided to do that.

Saving seconds is less impressive if the record is under 3 hours? Isn't it the other way around? Doesn't shaving off a few seconds become more impressive the shorter the run gets? I mean, if you managed to shave off a full 10 seconds in SMB1, assuming it were possible in a legitimate manner, the whole community would lose their minds over such an insane time save even though the run is less than 5 minutes long.

People need to stop talking about tod roggers as if he was the only or even first cheater at dragster. Tod was the third person to claim a time of 5.51 he was however the only one to get it posted to twin galaxies so he held the record. Atari would publish the high scores in their magazine and two people were confirmed by atari to get 5.51s before Tod.

He was still the one that not only was held as true for the longest time but he also lied and manipulated any evidence that the 5.51 was impossible

Man, must suck for the HP community to be banned from GDQ, their organization methods look quite neat, I thought they weren't a thing as a speedrun community.

Funny little detail is that within the HP family, Legacy is the only one with an isolated community. This is especially funny when you learn just how popular speedrunning is among trans folk. All i'm going to say is that I don't think there's going to be many trans runners on that one.

honestly hearing how the minecraft speedrun community is run no wonder why it's a shitshow. lotta arbitrary rules like allowing some texture changes but not others (either have it all or none, makes sense for none to reduce verification honestly) and of course the cheating scandals, so many would be solved imediately if forge or paper versions of the game had world files shared to the mods or again, just don't allow it for the sake of easier verification.
@pebble312
@pebble312 Жыл бұрын
My man verification has ALWAYS required several different world files, so ur wrong there. Plus, the texture pack thing is a complete non-issue entirely, and doesn’t impact 99.9% of the playerbase bc most don’t even want to change their textures anyways. Purely cosmetic. The only thing that I’ll give you was messy was the calculator situation lmao 😂

TECHNICALLY they didnt win a war against the US because the US never declared war on vietnam. they won against south vietnam, who was assisted by the US. the only war the US technically lost i thnk (that isnt some old war against native americans in like 1820) is afghanastan. the rest they were involved in but not like the main party

1:25 Classic Todd Todgers! 😂 Leave it to one pathetic man to completey tarnish the credibility of all subsequent speedruns lol. I suppose it couldn't remain on the honor system forever. The more people in a community, the more likely the possibility that some of those members are less than scrupulous.
