Did you ever get to see Waylon live? I'd love to hear about it!

My Dad loved Waylon Jennings. Our song was 'Luchenbac texas' and three days after he passed away it came on the radio at work...it was my first day back. I had to sit down for that one.

The word ICON is way over used. Waylon was the genuine real deal!!!

My all time favorite song by Waylon Jennings is "I've Always Been Crazy (But It's Kept Me From Going Insane)". Funny story about that song: I was in a Wendy's restaurant on my lunch break one day, and the lady who took my order asked me how I was doing. I responded, "I've always been crazy but it's kept me from going insane." She laughed and said, "Sir, you just made my day."

I will never be able to pin down my favorite Waylon tune. His catalog legitimately has a song for every mood and time of the day.

Belle of the Ball is a song I’ve sang since I was a teenager. I still incorporate it in my sets when I play.

There's something about Waylon's voice that doesn't give me an option but to sing along. Many years ago me and a buddy I worked with planned a trip to the NC mountains to find and photograph as many waterfalls as we could find. We took my old beat up Jeep CJ-5 since it would allow us to get to some of the more remote places. I had Waylon Jennings Greatest Hits on cassette and I found out my buddy was as big a fan as I am. One of my fondest memories is of the two of us travelling those remote gravel roads both singing along to Waylon at the top of our lungs.

How can I not resist telling my Waylon story. I moved to Australia in 1988 by marriage, wife and I both liked the Highwaymen and Waylon in particular. In 1995 or so the Highwaymen came to Melbourne for a tour. Concert at Melbourne Park arena. We got tickets high up and late in the show people were moving down to the stage. I did that also. Got to see 4 of my favorite singers at once from 15-20 feet. Awesome to look up and see all those craggy faces. As were leaving, we saw their tour bus and Waylon and Johnny there waving to the crowd, us too. Then we went home. In 2014, I met an elderly couple who were also at that show with a large group. That group stayed in their seats for 45 minutes after the show ended. Then Willie came out, with his guitar and sang to them for 45 minutes. Bob and Anne were delighted with that. I was so sorry I missed that. Bob and Anne were also great Highwaymen fans. They had the most awesome music collection I had ever seen, thousands of records, dvds, and cds in their basement. When I first entered their basement, my eyes popped out of my head and I stood staring, stunned out of my senses. We spent the next 7.5 hours talking music and me looking at their gatherings. They fed me because all the conversation got me hungry. We met a few more times as we had the same music interests and I then lost touch with them. If you do anything on Don Williams, I have a story to tell about his show in 1989 that the 4 of us saw, but we had not met yet. My fav Waylon tune is Old Timer. There are so many others I like...................................................

I used to rock Waylon with my dad. A couple outlaws listening to a true American.

I saw Waylon three times. The first time in Cheyenne Wyoming. The second time in Phoenix. The third and final time Billy. Bob's in Fort Worth. He was so nice and funny every time. My favorite

Growing up Waylon and his country music pals played continually through my household, mixes itself into the soul, becomes part of who you are. I'm grateful for the influence, keeps me thinking "country like humble".

Hey Otis, Fester Hagood from down here in Athens, Ga. I was a longtime close friend to Waylon's former road manager and front-of-house engineer, Wes Delk. Sadly, Wes passed a few months ago after a decade of serious health issues. He was an amazing Storyteller and we'd talk about Waylon for hours. He also was road manager for Dawes, Widespread Panic, Coe, Chubby Checker, Brittney Spears, the Indigo Girls, and so many more. He was a local Athens boy, and we threw a big outdoor festival in lieu of a funeral. Cindy Wilson (B-52s), Randall Bramblett (Traffic, Bonnie Rait, Greg Allman), Pylon, Tommy Townsend, & many more played the send-off, and raised money to help his family and his favorite charities. I believe his Waylon family also donated a considerable amount. Great job as always. Next time you get the chance, you should ask him if he knows the story behind why Waylon used the alias Philip Barnes when he got rooms at hotels. Rock, Fester

Yes, bring on the Waylon stories. He has too many great songs for me to choose. He was my favorite in the country rock era and beyond.

The only time I saw Waylon was in 1995 in Sorrento Louisiana. He headlined with David Allen Coe before him. Opening the mini-fest was a somewhat unknown at the time, Toby Keith. It was during the afternoon in a field in bum f*#k Louisiana between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. It was the last time I ever took mushrooms. There was about 2000 or so people there. Waylon was absolutely ROCKING. He tore it up. Closed the show with Honky-tonk Heroes. I maneuvered close to the stage and stood 10 feet from the Man and tripped while I kept thinking, that's f*cking Waylon Jennings and he's throwing down! One the highlights of my concert career.

I also remember seeing Waylon in the late 80s. A bunch of us went early and ended up in the first row. He was his usual friendly self with a lot of banter with the audience. At one point he asks the crowd to pick a song so having a very loud voice, I yelled out “Silver Ribbons”. He stepped out in front of the lights and asked who yelled out. I stood up and said “ I love that song”, he laughed and said “You don’t even look old enough to remember that song” but he played it. I was happier than a pig in mud…lol

We saw him and the Waylors at Lanierland Music Park in Forsyth County, Georgia in 1980. We were college students that didn't mind the drive just to see a great show. And it was. Still love listening to him, and finding a few songs that I never heard. The best country entertainer ever. Hell, maybe the best entertainer.

The folks that live in Waylon's old house in Brentwood left the wrought iron arch above the driveway that says "Southern Comfort" with the flying W in the center. A lot of people would have torn it down just to keep people from gawking. My favorite Waylon songs are "It's Not Supposed to Be That Way", written by Willie and "Rose in Paradise", that I think was written by Stewart Harris.

Sadly, I never got to see Waylon live but I grew up listening to his music and still do to this day.

Never saw Waylon live, I think I like "Trouble Man" and "Wrong" are my two favorites. I loved the remark about Reggie Young comment, and Waylon was right Reggie Young was an 800 pound guitar player. When I first realized how many records Reggie Young was the man who really did the lead work I was astounded. The story about Waylon and Willie and the guy who wouldn't pay them for the gig at a bar and Waylon told Willie to leave and as they were driving away Waylon took Willie to the back of bus and showed Willie some dynamite and suddenly the back of the tavern blew up.

Never got to see Waylon live but Waylon is one of my absolute favorites. Him and Merle are tied for number one. “A Long Time Ago” is one of my favorites written by Waylon and Shel Silverstein. But I love all his songs. Luchenbach Texas, has got the great first line. But all his music is inspiration to me. Love it.

The first time I saw Waylon live was at the Austin rodeo in 1988. Been hooked ever since. Thanks for these great uploads Otis!

Saw Waylon live at the Fox Theater in Detroit, don't recall the year... maybe 80's or 90's. Great show!!. Absolutely my favorite Country artist of all time. Unmistakable guitar playing and his singing is legendary, incredible vocals he had. I cried like a baby learning of his passing on 2/13/02 I remember exactly where I was!! Hoss, you were the best and your music will live forever, thank you for that and the affect you had on my life!!

Lol. I worked on those ferries between NS and Nfld. Willie crossed, and Barry White, too. Yes, saw Waylon live in Sydney, NS. It was probably the first concert I’d been to since moving there. Really enjoyed it. Iirc, his wife wasn’t there.

Met Waylon and Jesse at a book signing in 90’s. Waylon was doing his book signing and we chatted for a bit, I invited him to a steak house nearby but he respectfully declined. “ sorry Hoss but we got to be in Nashville by midnight “ . But he licked my wounds by whispering “ Jesse is in the history section “ Spent 30-45 minutes hanging with her completely un disturbed Awesome people and awesome experience.

Waylon Jennings is my number 1 singer I'm only 44 and I grew up on Waylon and highway men and lot of the old timers my ex wife said I have a old soul because of the music I listen to I said that's not it I just have good taste lol I saw Waylon last concert when he bless our little town of saint Joseph Missouri

I grew up 12 miles from Littlefield, Tx on a farm and knew Waylon's brother James all of my life as we filled up our vehicles as long as I can remember at James's Exxon gas station. The year was 1988 and I was playing in a local band and we got dubbed to open for Waylon for a home town concert he was putting on. I'll never forget Showco from Dallas bringing the big set up and speakers. Waylon had Ralph Mooney playing steel for him. Since I played bass, I got to use Jerry Bridges bass rig. I remember that it sounded so thin on stage but massive out front. I asked Jerry why it did not have any low frequency on it and he stated that it would muddy up the stage mix and that all the low end was added by the front house mixer. It was a big thrill for me and since that time James and Helen Jenning's Exxon has been turned into a liquor store and Waylon Museum. Helen gave me a little tour through it on a trip back home.

The story might be somewhat apocryphal, but it’s real to me. So this was in the very early 90s maybe late 80s in Chandler Arizona in the summer, and I mean it was 117° in Chandler and I have the Chevy Silverado with a 350 V8 no air so I had the windows down and Waylon up. Somebody in a long black American car I’m at a shame to admit I don’t know what it was, it had two doors and a very long Lincoln mercury mark something or other whatever and we came to a four-way stop coming out of this mall and I waved him through. He gave me a thumbs up, to which I returned a somewhat bewildered look, then he smiled and pointed at his face. I grinned really big and I gave him two thumbs up and he touched the brim of his hat and proceeded through the intersection and I got the chills. Man I was so cool I felt like I had icicles hanging off of me. And every once in a while no matter how hot it is outside I’ll think of that story and I’ll get the chills just like I did that day…

Barry, you tell your stories well... THANX.. I was a radio announcer for 30 yrs, and had a chance to catch up with WAYLON for some time in the early 90s.. He had just got back from New Zealand at the time.

I took Waylon as a mentor, a hero, an idle at a very young age. And I still find myself asking 'what would Waylon have done?' to many of my problems and life's bringings. But I have been called many things bc of it. But mostly people say about me....He's the real deal, or he tells it like it is! , Or he don't put up with people fucking him around.' either of them is the truth. But if not for Waylon I don't know what I would have been. I miss him and love the man. Thank you Waylon!

Hey Otis, thanks for these stories of Waylon, they are greatly appreciated. I'm a fan of many genre's of music but especially County music. Out of all of those genres I consider Waylon to be the best singer of them all. He could sing anything and make it sound good (even a jingle for Coca-Cola 'Stop the world have a coke'). His version of 'The Boxer' by Simon and Garfunkel, also his version of 'Can't You See' by The Marshall Tucker Band and his version of 'If Were A Carpenter' are just a few. So picking a favorite that he recorded is not easy but if I were to narrow it down to any one of them I would have to say it's 'Lonesome, Onry, and Mean'. The way that he carries the note on the word 'highway' in the line "been traveling this highway, been doing things my way' is classic Waylon Jennings. His version of 'Big Mamou' is the only song that I can sing in French. 'Cedartown, Georgia' is another favorite of mine. I have subscribed to your channel and I look forward to more videos. Got to say my Waymore fave would have to be “Just to Satisfy You,” one of his early hits with the killer opening line, “Someone’s gonna get hurt before we’re through.” Hon. mention: “The Wurlitzer Prize.”

Waylon has been touring since the 50's, and has been from the bottom to the top, everywhere in between, and back again. To actually tour with someone like that would be a once in a lifetime experience for anyone. An actual legend, yet still grinding it out......, Mindblowing.

I met Waylon and he signed my fender Waylon edition guitar. He was a very nice guy...

Me and my sister sat in the back of a little ford aspire and drove to Wheeling WV from up in Canada to see Waylon RIP and he never showed up. They replaced him with TG Shepherd or someone, we got our money back and drove home. I’m not knocking anyone but I wanted to see Waylon, had my heart set on it. Buy the time I got home I could hardly walk, I never got mad at Waylon though. I had been listening to him since I was a baby. My dad RIP was a Waylon freak, he seen him at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto a few times. I can remember my dad telling me he didn’t show up there one time. That was when they got busted coming cross the boarder, it was in Waylon’s book. I never did get to see Waylon, but I sure tried hard. ✌️

When Waylon would come to Northern Ky/Cincinnati, we would always meet his bus and go to Montgomery Ribs and eat with him and sometimes Jessie.

Actually met Waylon before a show in Wheeling, WV. Real down to earth guy and we talked for awhile as if we were lifelong friends. Couldn't believe he acknowledged me by name during his monolog. He was, (and still is) the greatest ever. Still listen to his music daily!

This morning I woke up at 5 am with a really good melody running through my head. It came to me in a dream. As I struggled to wake up and not forget it, I slowly realized I it was the first bar and a half of “Help Me Make It Through the Night”. But I was right - it was good! So that’s my favorite Waylon song for the day.

Late 80’s, in Henderson NV outside Las Vegas, I saw his bus in a grocery store parking lot. Went inside and ran into Waylon in the isle, hat, shades and all. I didn’t say anything but it was a memorable moment for me.

Mental revenge favorite Waylon song..

Impossible to choose a favorite Waylon song! Every song sounds so personal and full of emotion. He could hum the entire tune without singing a word and knock you down with weight of the song! Two Waylon stories.....When I was a young kid in about 79 or 80 my dad used to take me to a bar way out in the county somewhere between San Antonio and Houston where I would shoot pool and drink cokes in the back room. One day to my surprise there was a ragged looking old man sitting in "my" area drinking alone. My dad told me to go play outside and not bother that man. It turned out to be Waylon. My dad and his friends shot a few games of pool with him and had a few beers before he left. I have no idea if that was true or my dad just telling me that. My dad was not known for making things up and he was a little star struck for some time after that and to me that guy sure looked like Waylon himself. I have looked at a lot of pictures of him from that time period and the two images look the same. Second story...........My uncle was playing guitar in a band at Crystal Beach Texas when Waylon surprised them with great compliments on their sound and playing before leaving.

Always liked 'Ain't Livin' Long Like This' as for me it perfectly represents how Waylon lived during the 70's up into the 80's being a hell raiser with a hand on the wide open throttle. It's quite a testament when Keith Richards of all people stated how he couldn't keep up with country stars as far as partying and illicit substances went during the 70's. Even funnier was the story on how Waylon and Willy would feed drugs to Billy Joe Shaver as a guinea pig to see if they wanted to take them or not.

Couple of guitar players I jam with here in Santa Fe, are from Roswell & saw Waylon a bunch. Their band got a couple of warm up gigs with him locally, in the '80's. Waylon was a big turning point for me. I heard his newest album at a big frat party in 1969. Blew me away. Anyhow, I added another verse to the end of Waylon's song "Amanda" because it's too short! The Roswell guys listened & said it was Ok. And that it actually fit in lyrically with the song. Made me feel good. Love Waylon.

When Waylon and Pooty used to get together it was some of the funniest moments I have ever witnessed. No filters on either of them and trying to one up the other be it substances or rhetoric. It is a shame they both passed before their time was up. RIP Hoss and Pooty.
