In this series, we are going on a journey of testing out affordable watercolor brushes from around the world. Find the brush that best matches your paint brush needs! In this episode we test the Da Vinci Casaneo watercolor brush in round size 10.
We're going to test its water load, how they handle going up and down on paper, max brush width, belly drag, how thin a line it can do, painting leaf, snaking, wash, gradation, lift and dashes.

I like the slight unevenness of this brush, on top of all its other virtues this attribute just adds character to its mark making. I love that it can be multipurpose so well, I really like not having to constantly change brushes. And it is synthetic!

I have some of these and I like them a lot. My best synthetics. That being said, I have the same issue with Casaneo that I have with other synthetics I've tried. They hook at the tip after just a few hours of painting, so I can't for the life of me get them back to the great tip they start out with. Tried every hack. Still my favourite for almost anything. And then I use my few, small fur brushes for the tiniest details.

Oh shoot. I hate that. I have a couple of these and they dont have any fine tip at all.

Casaneo also has a XS series that is 15cm long (986 flat, 987 sword ,988 round ,989 rigger round) -not to be confused with the travel line. They are all one size, and great for a small Plein air kit and go from 8 to 17 € You can do lots with these 4 small brushes, and I think water control is easier as they are smaller. I like Casaneos in general but find them somewhat soft and hard to control water as they get bigger and thicker. They remind me of some squirrel brushes, although these are not designed or marketed as squirrel brush replacement. Have you tried the Casaneo XS brushes? Thanks, as always, for your very thorough review. I am always intrigued and expectant to see how the brushes perform in your quite exhaustive test parkour.

How does the casaneo compare to the cosmotop mix b especially when it comes to detail?

it would be interesting to know/see the difference between the CASANEO and the new COLINEO brushes from DaVinci

I love these brushes. I don‘t want to use brushes with real hair anymore - it just feels strange to paint animals with animals. I also love the French brush - these and the rounds are my most used brushes and they still work very well. ❤

Please, Which Casaneo size brush would you recommend? I do sketches with Van Gogh colors, on A4 and A5 size papers. I already have No1 Nova and a No 3 Rigger and a big mop quil , I need a medium size, Would a Number 6 be a good size for sketching on A5 and A4 size paper? Thanks in advance

@@greekveteran2715 I will try my best: I use a size 1 for small details, a size 4 for small areas and I think this size is very versatile. I also have size 6 which is great for bigger areas (though I would not recommend it for the background). For huge areas I would recommend the French Style Casaneo size two or bigger, which holds al lot of water. I think it depends on what you like to paint. So I think a 4 (perhaps better for A5) or 6 would serve you well. The Casaneos are very soft - if you need a more precise brush for details I would recommend the new DaVinci Colineo, which do not hold a lot of water but are more stiff and therefore more precise. Hope this helped… 😅

I watched all of your reviews in this series and just purchased this brush and the Escoda Perla. They seem like they would compliment one another. I’m really hoping I’m going to love these brushes. Thanks so much for such a well thought out review of each of the brushes in this series. Your videos are always so thorough and it is greatly appreciated!

Please, do you paint landscapes? Would the Casaneo be a good brush for drawing trees, grass etc?

This looks like it would be a great brush to glaze with! I tend to use squirrel hair brushes when I glaze. this one would give me the control and the ability to achieve fine lines but be soft enough so not to disturb the previous layers. Looks like this one might be a must have for me!!!🤔

Davinci also issue Casaneo as a wide flat brushes (mottler). I have #30, a 3 cm wide one, and I use it to glaze and to rewet large areas that already have been painted on. It really is super soft and gentle, more gentle than any others. It hardly disturbs the layers at al, even on paper that does not hold them well. I also use it as a large mop brush ) It can be formed both with hands, tip of the jar and even by paper to somewhat resembling the round mop and works well, instead of far more expensive mops )

Fabulous review thank you! I have a smallish quill in these brushes and have always been so impressed with the point. Need to look more closely at finding some more… sounds like they might help me move away from sables… hate the thought of the cruelty. Will definitely go thorough your site so I support you! Love your channel! ❤ wonderful way to show the qualities .

I bought this while in germany and then it was so fluffy it looked really hard to use. It's been ignored for the past year, but now I'm thinking to give it another try and try to create a thinner point.

Casaneo xl mops are brilliant - they are longer and store insane amount of water, point is amazing, no 2 is close to your usual 10 in width

I have this brush in size 10 flat travel. the barrel is kind of chunky, but because i use it for more expressive strokes i really like it. it holds tons of water for a flat and unique brushes in travel sizes are really are to find

Thanks for the thorough review. I haven't seen you upload in awhile I hope you are well. I was very impressed with the casaneo, synthetics have come a long way. I would love if you could try out the colineo series. I believe it is Da Vincis latest kolinsky imitation. Before that, i thought the closest thing was versatil (or even this casaneo has a lot of qualities of sable, altho it is trying to imitate squirrel)

As I hear your description about this brush, I was wondering: is it maybe very similar to the Princeton Neptune series? Do you have any experience in the Neptune series from Princeton? I love the Princeton Heritage too btw, so I love your search for a more affordable and better to obtain in Europe versions. Also, are these hairs similar to the Da Vinci Casaneo Quill brushes? And what are the differences between the quill and this 5598 series? (I know this video is a year old, but hope to hear from you anyways, if not, I understand too. Thank you in advance!)

I have a Casaneo and a Neptune, though don't use them very much. Casaneo is noticeably softer, in my opinion, and holds more water. Neptune though is somewhat better at really thin lines not overloaded with water.

yep, these brushes are good. Have the round 26 and flat 8 and 12. They're pretty useful for the layering (esp the big one) and hold water well, but that's not a kind of an allrounder for me. Still the best quality for its price :) Thanks for your work
