Addie Lyons, there are a number of reasons. In this particular river the deep holes where fish live are few and far between. This particular land owner got hit especially hard on his only fishing hole because the otters were over populated in this area. A lot of dock owners have troubles with otters pooping on their dock all the time, and yes I do make as much use as I can from the animal. I sell the fur and harvest their glands to use in producing other trapping lures for various animals.

Great video! Found it very helpful!!! Noticed that you mentioned that you are from Missouri. Where are you located In Missouri? I live in the Ozarks as well (Springfield to be exact). How's your beaver season treating you this year so far? Weather has posed quite a challenge for me. Anyways good luck out on the line, and Happy Trapping!!!

Really nice video. Very instructive. I appreciate you taking the time to make it and share it. I see you use the 660 a lot. I bought one this past season to try out, but the dog needed work and the safetys are very soft and won't hold the springs shut, so I didn't use it this season. I'm going to work on it and use it next season. Do you have good results with your 660's? Hope you had a good season and thanks for a great vid!
@trapsetting101
@trapsetting101 10 жыл бұрын
First thanks for the input and for watching. I will tell you those 660s are a real game changer not only for otters but for trap shy beaver. I've found my refusals dropped to almost none when I started using the 660s over the 330s. I get better suitcased beavers with the 660s as well as less refusals from the exceptionally large ones. We make our own using 5/16 rod, so the cost factor isn't so bad, the ones you saw in the video I had less than 15 bucks each tied up in them cost wise. We're both buying a dozen 330s to make into just 660s for the next season.
@trapsetting101

I didn't video tape the entire setup just for the sole factor of how long it took to upload what we had, but we had roughly 2 miles of this creek set up and we produced 8 otters in 2 weeks out of that general area.

@trapsetting101 9 жыл бұрын
You're welcome to your opinion. They were once endangered here in Mo also, but thanks to trappers they have been reintroduced and now are thriving to the point that they're a nuisance.
@nerd9713
@nerd9713 9 жыл бұрын
Jochem Witteveen not the same species of otter, north american river otters are plentiful in many parts of the united states to the point they need to be trapped to manage their population so that they stay cute and cuddly to the public and not a serious nuisance. same concept with most furbearing animals in north america. trapping also prevents serious disease outbreaks since when population densities become too high diseases such as distemper or rabies they can turn into epidemics wiping out local populations of animals
@jimmyraythomason

+Gavin Stedman Here in Alabama otter have become a terrible nuisance to fish pond owners. I get besieged annually by requests from pond/lake owners to help get rid of the otters. Otters have decimated the fish population in some lakes as to be almost nonexistent.

I wish I had your problem, otter are making a comeback in western upstate ny, they are doing great in the Adirondacks, we have the population for a trapping season but it will be probably another decade before there will be a season for them outside of the Adirondacks

This industry is primitive and barbaric. What use is an otter pelt in the 21st century?
@trapsetting101
@trapsetting101 7 жыл бұрын
Andrewsarchus Naturelover Primitive, perhaps. Barbaric, absolutely not! modern traps have come a long ways. the pelt serves the same purpose it always has. garments, etc... I'm able to take the surplus populations and bring money back to the American economy.
@AnswersInNature
@AnswersInNature 7 жыл бұрын
It's unfair that humans keep exploiting animal populations as human numbers keep growing and growing. The pelt is only worn by fashion snobs.
@trapsetting101
@trapsetting101 7 жыл бұрын
Andrewsarchus Naturelover fur is a renewable resource that, if managed properly, will be here until the end of days. No one is "exploiting" animal populations. We're simply managing a natural resource, and making use of the animal to the vest of our abilities. The government heavily regulates our natural resources to ensure over harvest doesn't happen.

seriously..in this day and age its just such a piece of shit thing to do....there is such little wildlife left..i cant believe people still do this...it takes a certain kind of garbage to do this for fun....
@trapsetting101

That's a pretty uneducated thing to say. Why don't you explain to me why it's wrong? Do you think that in this day and age we should just let animals overpopulate?
@trapsetting101
@trapsetting101 9 жыл бұрын
I'm curious to know how much time you spend outdoors? I'm out here every day and the wildlife in Mo is thriving. In fact here trappers are the ones to thank for the presence of otters. We're the ones who caught them and relocated them here in this area. They now thrive to the point of being a nuisance. They're seen often in our lakes, streams and rivers. They clean the fish out of farm ponds. Next time educate yourself a little before making an ignorant statement such as "there is such little wildlife left".
@nerd9713
@nerd9713 9 жыл бұрын
john dover where do you live, wildlife is everywhere and most of it is right under your nose, you may not always see it because a lot of animals are nocturnal or just generally shy or sneaky, but where i live in upstate ny our wildlife is expanding rapidly, we just expanded the trapping area in ny for bobcat because they are doing so well, plans are in place for expanding fisher trapping in the next year or so, black bear hunting has expanded because their population is doing really good. otters were trapped during the 90's from the adirondacks with foothold traps and cage traps and released in western ny and are booming and we will probably expand the otter season into western ny within the next ten years. furbearing animals are a resource that trappers will fight to protect and conserve so that they will always be here
