OtterBox water-proof survival kit, light-weight and compact, and stays connected to you. Best for worst case scenarios while water adventuring. This kit was built around the idea of offering some basic emergency gear to people who spend a lot of time around the water - canoers, rafters, fisherman, kayakers, etc. I wanted a kit that would stay dry and offer warmth and some other tools after a person, for example, got dumped out of a canoe and lost all their other gear. Here's a list of everything included:

Just a few thoughts in chronologic order of your video: 2:27 Carabiner - you want it to stay attached and an aluminum rappelling biner weighs the same as that one. Paracord: Double cobra weave the same length, wider - twice the cord. Break away: clip it to a belt loop, few are tough enough to resist a river if you get pinned. Consider wearing something like a rattlesnake paracord belt instead of tying the cord on to your box. Mine has nearly 200 ft of 750 paracord and a belt buckle that works as an axe head or bark shaver. Clip a small float to the biner and you can find the kit later if you lose it in the water. 4:23 water container - consider using a simple non-lubricated condom. Much smaller, more volume, very durable if you buy a good one.6:08 Your choice of dryer lint although good for a purist, is not as effective as a small bic lighter. (which has it's own flint and steel when you run out of fuel and have to scavenge for tinder on day 6-10) You are looking for heat day 1 - get a lighter smaller than tinder flint and steel by far. Add a piece of aluminum foil folded up and you have a pan for boiling water. There are also tons of really light and small LED flashlights coming out of china for about $6 - they run on a single AAA battery and produce over 100 lumens for several hours - mine also has an SOS signal feature. 7:22 fishooks great - suggest you also include a couple of pieces of illegal fish bait (getting arrested is less worrisome than dying). You might catch a fish with a lure, you WILL catch fish with a pheromone bait. In addition, the paracord makes a lovely fishing net for an illegal funnel trap. Regarding your choice of a knife, I prefer a high carbon blade Swiss mora style knife - very inexpensive and highly effective for all survival purposes. You can detach the handle and make your own later if you are worried about space. 9:38 the fishing line is redundant, your inner core of paracord IS fishing line. Consider replacing the matches, tinder, firestarter with a small vial of carmex or vaseline (and a lighter) - either burns a hell of a lot longer and has multiple first aid applications. 10:20 food. Protein is great, but bulky. You won't lose much lean muscle mass in the first few days of a survival situation. By then you'll have fish from that river. Survival for a day means CALORIES - you will be hard pressed to beat the caloric content of an oil (even olive oil) per size of the food, and if you look around I am sure you can find one you would enjoy on greens, that might also augment your fire starting kit (coconut oil works too). Roughly 2500 calories per 10oz of coconut or olive oil (260g) compared to 10 scoops of protein powder (340g) which would net 1400 calories and nearly 3x the space occupied. That's why so many people recommend sardines in oil, salt protein and CALORIES from the oil.

If you magnetize the needle now, you can make a compass with a piece of floating wood or leave in an emergency. You already have a compass, but you know the saying "two is one, one is none". Also if you did get dunked in the water and were freezing, your hands would loose dexterity to undo the rubber bands to get to the dryer lint. I would stuff a few loose cotton balls in the empty space just to have more tinder that does not require work to get to.

Not bad. Here's a couple suggestions. Glue the match stricker strip to the cardboard sheath of a single edge razor blade. That way you have a firm striking surface and a razor blade for fine cutting. I would tape that needle to the inside of the box to make it secure and easy to find when needed. Add an AMK emergency poncho. They are tiny, made of bright orange space blanket, and add an extra layer of comfort. I do wilderness search & rescue and I never go out in the woods without one. Thanks for the vid. Keep em coming!

Hey Tim, if you want a head lamp, Mini Maglite was the first hand lamp on the market. It is only a headband that the flashlight slides into, but it folds flat. You could also keep it on the outside of the Otter Box. The Mini Maglites, also give you some options like how wide a beam you want to through or remove the top and use the mini maglite as a candle. That knife is great. I own on and have wrapped the handle with 550 paracord. It's only about 8 foot but with that space blanket you have a shelter. It will keep you out of the rain. Being on a river, I hope there is traffic and you don't have to wait over night. Fishermen are usually very helpful types. Cheers!

Nice kit...well thought out. I have had a PFD ripped away from my body by a tree branch so I probably wouldn't even consider that. What I did was design a very comfortable wrap-around to hold my PSK (personal survival kit). Used one of my sister's tube tops and folded it over to create a pocket and then sewed parallel lines to further isolate a pocket just large enough to hold my PSK. And, finally, I attached velcro strips at the opening. Works perfectly and is very comfortable when worn inside whatever shirt I am wearing, even my wetsuit (for ocean going fishing trips). Also, I experimented and determined that, for me, wearing it in front works best. For females, they might prefer it around back.

Its a decent kit to get started with. Everyone's preference will vary slightly but the main thing is to have as much as possible on hand in case of emergency. One thing you may not have factored in to getting dumped out of the canoe is being injured in the process. Taking a fall, getting hung on trees or some kind of trap, hitting a large rock, ect. There is always a risk of injury in a bad situation even for the best of trained people. Hard to plan for every little problem without bringing the entire house with you. Planning ahead is your best protection. Know where you're going to be and what is around you. Assemble a kit based on the area and the hazards of the area you are in. Some people tell me I worry about it too much, but i'll tell you what... I would rather have it and never need it, than the other way around. Good video.

You might want to change the v\box color to a bright yellow, orange, etc so you can find it if you place it down and have to leave for what ever reason because black coated things (containers, knives etc) tend to be lost because the coating doesn't catch the eye. I found alot of things that campers and bushcrafters have left because they lost their tools just by leaving it on the ground for a minute.

Good Idea! You have space for a couple of Coffee Filters to filter your water before you purify it. Also you can stuff-and-seal all sorts of things inside straws: Vaselene cotton balls, hand sanitizer, cooking oil, ointments... and so on. Maybe some peanut butter shots if they are available in your country. Some ranger bands around the Otter Box may come in handy.

Regarding the zip-lock & water purification, you can simply leave the water out in the sunlight for 6 or 7 hours while you improve your shelter, search for food, collect fire wood, and so forth. Combine with the space blanket or aluminum foil and some pine-needles, or willow for an impromptu hot cup of tea.
@Nebelwerfer210cm

Plano makes similar clear-sided cases for a much lower price point and without all the rubber padding, giving you more room inside. I would start with that as the case. Remove the matches and replace with a lighter (with a firesteel for backup), and add some longer-lasting tinder, like vaseline cotton balls. Upgrade the fishing line from mono to braided fishing line to use to repair clothes and emergency first aid. Most importantly, add a freaking whistle. It seems that a lot of emergency/survival kits I see on KZfaq focus more on trying to be tacticool than actually getting yourself out of a bad situation. The mirror is a good idea, but not very good for signaling rescuers in a wooded or mountainous terrain. A whistle will go a long way to letting people know where you are if you need to get found.

Really like the kit. A couple of suggestions: Add some moleskin. If you are dumped out and you need to hike out, you may develop blisters on your feet. It will keep you going. If space allows, I'd add a couple of glucose tabs (from diabetic aisle in pharmacy) for energy, or some hard candy in a small ziplock bag. If you repack it and find that you have more extra space, I'd add a piece of beef jerky in a vacuum packed wrapper for protein. Should last a year or so.

That's a great purpose built kit for a highly possible scenario. The only major thing I'd change is the case... I'd pack everything into a stainless water bottle like Stanley's 24oz utillity bottle, or any other wide mouth SS bottle and add some instant soups... That way you could cook and enjoy a nice internally warming and hydrating cup of soup (no need for nasty water tablets if you can boil water) while you're wrapped in your mylar blanket waiting for your clothes to dry and eventual rescue. Also, add a small whistle and park your butt on a slow section of water to make rescue easy!

My 2 cents change the dryer lint to a fire straw ( cotton soaked on petroleum jelly sealed in a drinking straw about 2" long). And get braided fishing line, much stronger and takes up a lot less space, so you can have more. And put the fishing line on a small sewing bobbin.

A whistle is also very useful on the water, as if you scramble up the bank, they might not be able to see you as easy if youre in a group. Id also attach a knife to my BA (I carry mine on a pocket in my BA so if it did get caught, you could cut it quickly. Sweet kit though! Oh, anti-diarrhea are also very useful when you're dealing with river, especially if you take a mouthful when you swim.

For the fishing line in my survival kit I use sewing machine spools. I carry my survival kit in a fanny pack that's always on me even when canoeing. The box is water proof but rather big indeed. Also not metal so you can boil water or make char cloth in it. I also use this transparant tape for my fishing hooks. I would add some zip ties to it. But a good review.

Looks pretty good. One thing I always like to do with my fixed blade knives is wrap them with paracord just to give myself a little added cord.

just remember to unwrap it once in a while or you risk moisture getting trapped in there and rusting your blade handle

A few months ago I did get my canoe swept down stream, after it capsized, cuz my buddy was trying to do something stupid. Good thing was that we had a few guys an hour or so upstream. He wasn't able to hold onto the canoe, and lost everything he had with him, including his glasses. He drifted a few hundred yards downstream and got ashore. I had all my stuff attached to me so I swam downstream to meetup with him. (Wasn't a really good idea to swim, I was quite exhausted after that.) All that was attached to me was: -> life vest -> 750mL camelbak eddy -> a cheap dive knife -> small phanny bag filled with: - a few energybars - filter straw - poncho - SOL 1person emergency blanket - first aid kit - 5" ferro rod - my EDC items I took out my pants: - cheap multitool - Buck Bantam - thorfire pf01 - 15ft of paracord (outer casing only)

Chapstick - It can be used not only for your lips to protect them against wind and sun burns, but can also be used as a "wax" as a candle. The knife without the sheath could be wrapped in more Paracord. Personally, I would wrap it in a "firecord", so that I would have not only the extra paracord, but a fire string as well. If you wrapped it in a Fish/Fire Combo cord, you would have additional fishing line along with the fire cord. If you have to gut the paracord, you can use the internal 7 nylon strings for stitching, if necessary. A small section of paracord with the internal nylon fluffed up could also be used as a lure for the fishing line. I would suggest not buying "waterproof" matches, but instead get some "strike anywhere" matches and dip them into melted candle wax and then let them cool. The candle wax would make them waterproof for you, and the strike anywhere tips would let you use them without the need for a striker paper. Although the paper doesn't really take up much space, so it is just another option. Since you have duct-tape in the kit, I would opt to include sterile gauze instead of the bandaids. The gauze could be applied to any wound with duct-tape holding it in place instead of worrying about a bandaid that might not fit the wound.

I have a metal bobbin with plenty of fishing line. Stores well, probably has other uses. And I would add some Pedialyte powder or Gatorade powder for rehydration. I don't know how you would add food in that Otter box. Maybe a mini snickers? Good ideas. Thanks for sharing!

+MrLeonidas0001 "Tactical Adventure Lifestyle" Ha - yeah, people seem to dig the idea. Otter Boxes are no longer made from what I hear (seems like they've moved into just cases for phones), but they are available on EBay and other companies (Pelican for example) make very similar boxes.

nice kit, i agree another color would be best...the black color may subject the contents to higher heat and perhaps melt/compromise some contents. salt water can also degrade rubber items. Thanks for the good vid! have a nice week~~

That is very good set up for the kayaking scenerio. If I can I will add some glow stick to make myself visible for rescuers in the dark. Whistle. Diamond sharpener. I'm using 3'x1' plate from china that costs £0.50. paper coffe filter. Fat wood or more rubber bands to make the first fire going easier. I think bright duck type will be better choice in emergency situation.

Nice white water kit! There are many PFD's that you can buy that have pockets that your kit would fit into. The pockets are usually low enough on the front so as not interfere with paddling.

Nice Kit, You might want to consider a collapsible tin cup (1. drinking , and 2. boil water). another thing i add in mine are those ramen noodle flavor packs (not the noodles, just the flavoring). they have some nutrients to them that could help in a situation and don't take up much room. you could even fit them and a few of your items in the collapsible cup.

I think it's a solid kit. One thing I would add would be a map of the area, I'm pretty sure a compact map would fit. That way if you know your starting point you could make your way out.

Paraffin coated jute twine is super small, water Proof and starts with a small spark,Mahatma make a line of dehydrated soups that would get you by,also if you wax coat your match striker it won't get wet.alcohol swabs are also great for this kind of kit, disinfect and start a fire.just a few thoughts, enjoyed the vid,

A piece of corrugated cardboard can be "hollowed out and cut just larger than the blade to protect the edge. Another thing I have used is a piece of that U-shaped trim that goes on the edge of car doors to just give the edge some protection. Just my$.02

for your fishing line you can go to a arts/craft store that sells sowing supplies and get what's called a micro sewing spool for cheap and they're really small and will help keep everything together. that's what I do.

Knorr do a powder soup chicken and noodles works for carbohydrates and protein, but you might want to 're pack it in a zip lock bag because the packet is bulky plus it tastes great.

I use oodles and noodles in alot of my survival kits. You can use the noodles by there selves or use the season packet with them. Or if you are sick and can't eat solids you can use the season packet as a broth to drink. The season packets would be good protein for your kit just a suggestion. Thumbs up on the video

I'd say an oven bag or electric crock pot disposable bag is better for water collection or water storage because they are thinner and lighter and just as strong as a zip lock bag. They don't have a zip seal but you can just twist it shut. They are also obviously more heat resistant because they are designed to be put in the oven so you can put boiling water in it.
