Had Skorzeny, been on the side of the Allies, and pursued his military success and exploits against Germany, and Nazisum, then he would have entered the History Books, as an heroic and highly decorated war veteran, possibly given the highest military awards and recognition for services to his country. The British press would have heralded him as a true hero, and someone for younger generations to aspire to………….

A danish Waffen - SS man was with Skorzeny freeing Mussolini on Gran Sasso - survived the ordeal and recieved the IRON CROSS 1 grade handed over by the chef himself (ADOLF Hitler) , after the war he was nicknamed Christoffer Irontie - in danish Cristoffer jernslips , died sometime in 1970 years.

Boldness and fearlessness seems to create good luck when it is needed which is at the core of the SAS motto 'Who Dares Wins'. Skorzeny seems to have lived by this SAS motto.

I am currently reading a couple of books on Otto Skorzeny to get a feel for him and to get an understanding of how he thought and operated. 'My Commando Missions' by Otto himself and 'Commando Extraordinary' by Charles Foley. Skorzeny really did live by the SAS motto - Who Dares Wins. Skorzeny states he met David Stirling, founder of the Brit SAS and 'Wild' Bill Donovan of the OSS, after the War. Those meetings would have been fascinating to listen to had they been audio or film recorded. I am reading these books as background research for a novel set in Europe in WW2 which I am writing which includes Otto Skorzeny as organiser for a fictional commando operation carried out towards the end of the War. He is a fascinating character. I have read elsewhere that some claim he grabbed the glory of Luftwaffe Fallschirmjaeger for the snatching of Mussolini from his imprisonment at Grand Sasso. According to Foley's book and Skorzeny's book, these were not fallschirmjaeger but his own commandos dressed as fallschirmjaeger. I would like to research this aspect some more and if anyone knows in which books, the use of Luftwaffe fallschirmjaeger for the snatching of Mussolini is established, please can you let me know the title and author so I can check this out. If it is established he claimed success re the Mussolini falsely, this will alter how I write Otto into the novel.

He was a product of the time. He like many did his duty as it was understood at the time. I don't second guess such men and their decisions. Since I come from a different time and place. If anything he was a legend in his own time. I was a 20 years old and starting my second year as a commercial pilot in 1975, I heard he had died on the new and well left to go to work. I flew a canceled check run for a bank back then.

It certainly wasn't his troops who rescued Mussolini, it was the German Paratroops (fallschirmjager) not the SS, he went along as the poster boy and the paratroopers were not happy about it. He took all the credit for it.

My grand father and his brother both knew and worked for otto in martinstown House in co. kildare Ireland. From what I was told, he talked very little to anyone.

Special thanks to veteran soldiers. Sharing personal information/combat experiences making this documentary more authentic and possible. Fighting/perishing/surviving knowing certain death/debilitating wounds were often times possible. Regardless of the consequences still advanced forward. That's true grit style determination to succeed. Germany was somewhat still in the war mid 1943. Afterwards fighting a slowly defensive retreating action. Uncle Otto didn't seem to make much difference in the out come of the war. He still had a following attend his funeral. That says something about him.

My dad was in the American arny during the Battle of the Bulge. A checkpoint caught some Germans pretending to be Americans because one of the GIs thought it was strange that the enlisted men in a jeep were polite to the officers. They started asking the krauts all the questions about Mel Ott's batting average etc and it was soon apparent that these weren't Americans.

Fought for the bad guys, but fought very well. That rare species of magnificent bastard. He reminds me of Flashman. He managed to get himself a posting after fighting on the Eastern front in 1941 outside Moscow that wasn't quite as dangerous, partly no doubtby looking the part and talking a good game. Then he managed to scuttle any suicidal plans. When a plan came up that was fighting 200 Italians, yeah we can do that one. Then later, wait we'll be fighting Hungarians, yeah we can do that one. Then okay we're going to go behind American lines, I'll command that one from headquarters. When he was in placed in command of an actual panzer division against the Soviets, he pulled out as soon as he could come up with a good excuse I'm certain that by the time of werewolf, he was well practiced at jollying along the high command but I'm also certain he never really intended to fight a last stand in the Alps. Goes to Berlin right at the end to meet Hitler and didn't even stay long enough to get his medal pinned on. Lol. I'm not saying that I admire the son-of-a-b****, but he obviously didn't have much of a role in the Holocaust, or the Israelis would have assassinated him rather than work with him. He's kind of worth a laugh because he did carry out some impressive missions while always making sure that his own chance for survival was high. Just about the only attitude he could have had that would have seen him survive in that kind of a crazy regime.

Actualy, England & France DID have an option in September 1939. Neither country was ready for war, Both countrys had suffered heavely in WW I and it was still fresh in the minds of the populations, nor was either one able in ANY military way to assist Poland. Their declaration of unity with Poland was just a vane attempt to bluff Hitler into not invading. Had England / France backed down, (when there was nothing they could do), There was a very good chance that war in the WEST would not have happened or at the very least been postponed by a few years or until and if Germany had defeated Russia. Yes, France and Germany had fought numerious wars in the past and really did not like each other. However, Hitler did not want to go to war with England and would probably have left France alone because of the alliance with England. Based upon these facts, and the fact that Germany DID NOT declare war on France / England, it could be said that as far as WW II in Europe, England & France actualy started it with the declaration of war upon Germany.

But this is somewhat historically misrepresented. Skorzeny's only mission was to find out Mussolini's whereabouts. The task of liberation was given to the XI.Fliegerkorps under the command of General Student. He commissioned the I./FschJgRgt 7 (FschJgLehr Btl und command of Major Harald Mors) with the task. Skorzeny was only allowed as a guest with a few of his men in one glider, because he had done a good reconnaissance job. Skozeny was never tasked with freeing the Duce. However, as an impostor, he always liked to portray it that way himself. A brave man indeed, but he wasn't too serious about the truth.

Hitler's demands on Poland had some legitimacy, he asked for those lands that had previously belonged to Germany and been given to Poland in the Treaty of Versailles. It constantly amazes me that historians fail to mention this. It gives a completely different view of the reasons for the invasion of Poland. And this is simply a factual comment on history.

He is an interesting person. I wonder if the German high command failed to understand what special operations really were, or if even he knew. It seems most of these operations were too large and clumsy to really be "special", and spreading small elements of troops out behind enemy lines without direct control probably sounded crazy to them. Then again, I think the OSS and SOE activities behind enemy lines were largely exaggerated after the war as well, since there is little evidence that partisans were very effective in the grand scheme of things.

Try getting things right the rest of Czechoslovakia was not annexed in 1939 A. Czechoslovakia no longer existed Slovakia having succeeded to become a separate state which was never taken over by the Germans - it became a minor axis ally. B. The rump Czeck state was incorporated as a protectorate of the German state, which is not quite the same as an annexed state It was ruled by the Germans but was not an actual part of the Third Reich, thus as a protectorate it's borders were guaranteed by the Germans which is what Hitler had agreed to at Munich Spiritually it broke the Munich agreement but technically Hitler could argue it did not as he had only stated He would guarantee its borders as a protectorate he thus did that. Britain and France may have believed that the rump Czeck state would be a totally independent state but whether that was an actual defined clause of the agreement or not I have no Idea.

The "Waffen SS" were the LEAST picky about "racial purity," of the different branches of the SS, accepting, for instance, Bosnian Muslims, Ukrainian Slavs, French, Belgians, etc....and even volunteers from Manchukuo (Japanese occupied Manchuria). The "Waffen SS" were the military branch of the organization. It was the main, non-military SS that only accepted "pure-bred" Aryans (or, should I say, "Aryans" as defined by the Nazis, not the REAL ones, who had conquered India, Iran, Iberia, & Britain, in the days of old).

Flying the plane onto the mountain area was a feat of pilot ability. Everything else is tiny compared to what other special forces commanders achieved in ww2. I think he was a second rate puppet of propaganda, and a very good soldier only. The black prince on the Italian side was more of the real thing a lot of the time
