I think using the Wishing Star for a wish that requires opening a portal will leave the Wishing Star inert, the same way you can't use Magic Beans or Wardrobe Ashes after using them for opening a portal.

Hmm maybe... But that's isn't a satisfactory assumption. There are so many anomalies like this on the show. Like launcelot died way before Cora as revealed in season 2 when Cora was parading around as him but yet in season 5 he is alive?! 

Avnish Sengupta I don't see any troubles with my assumption. Though I noticed assumptions like that have been needed for a long time in order to explain unexplained phenomena. For instance in the Season 3 finale a time travel portal is opened for the first time in history, indicating that before that time travel should be impossible. Yet in the Season 1 finale Regina retrieved an apple from the time when it had just left Snow White's hands. The assumption I used explain that is that in regular portals the flow of time is positive in the direction of the portal (so objects can only move forward in time through regular portals) whereas in time travel portals the flow of time can be chosen. I wouldn't know about Season 5 though, so far I only finished watching up to 4x11.

If they do move forward that is still time travel. Normal portals can travel across realms and within realms only. My assumption would be that in season 1 the apple vanished into the ground due to Regina's magic after snow ate it. It must have teleported into the vault which came with her to storybrooke and she simply summoned it from there. 

Avnish Sengupta It is correct that going forward in time is still time travel, but if all normal portals have a forward time travel mode, they cannot be used to change the past, and therefore their time travel functionality would be pretty useless. Also, if a person goes through them, this person must know how to predict the future to even use the time travel functionality. These factors would explain why the time travel functionality of normal portals is so rarely used if it existed. I have a problem with your assumption that Regina teleported the apple to her vault. If that were the case, the apple would have been available in Storybrooke by the end of Season 1 so no magic should have been needed to power Jefferson's hat to open a portal to retrieve the apple. On top of that, Jefferson had said that Regina should guide the hat "to the place and time this object exists" clearly indicating at least some form of time travel with a normal portal.

It's a note in a bottle, that Elsa and Anna's parents wrote to them in the 4x01, just before the ship sunk. Where Anna and Kristoff were meant to die, was the exact spot the ship went down. How that happen, who knows, how can they apparently know where it sunk and to actually get to the spot, most likely heaps, heaps far away from where they were. Just don't ask.
