This is one of the best kept secrets in vintage lenses - whatever you do, don't miss it!
It's very sharp, with very nice colours and it's very cheap too! Small, light and portable this lens won't weigh you down.
It makes beautiful images and their absolutely quality blew me away - I really hadn't expected them to be this good. This is a stunning optic.
Check it out for yourself in the video.

Thank you very much for another good find. I probably would have no idea that such a lens existed if it wasn't for you YT channel. I absolutely adore your channel and it's a pleasure to listen to your voice, too. I personally don't like artificially excited and 'attacking' American show-off style of presentation on KZfaq channels. Once again great work and thank you.

As usual a great, informative and zen video. I just last week sold a copy of this smashing lens on eBay for around 20 pounds. I have my one, but have sold several for between 20 to 35. I really wasn't aware of the real value as you mentioned. It just goes to show that there are still some great cheap manual lenses out there that haven't yet achieved cult status and silly prices. Keep the great videos coming Nigel. 👌👍

Dear Sir. I feel so lucky I found and immediately subscribed to your channel. There is so much wisdom, expertise, and just fun. All in one-super talented man show. What is very important is that every story about exotic equipment is supported by your beautiful, meaningful images. If I may... is there an episode in your video collection that suggests how you choose and use adapters? Thank you very much for your kind support and your time.

Thanks for another interesting video. You’ve jogged my memory about Miranda lenses. I remembered that I have Miranda lens somewhere and had to try and find it. It’s an Auto Miranda 50mm f/1.8 in very nice condition but I can’t remember ever shooting with it. It’s a very small lens. I’ll have to move it up the list of lenses to play with next.

I bought this lens for less than £20 some weeks back. Seems well made and am very pleased with it. Very versatile being 36mm equiv on my Sony APSC or 48mm on my Olympus as you say Nigel. A shame that there’s not more choice of them available at this focal length.

Nice Video as always. Would love to see a video on the Miranda SLR cameras. I have one in it has a removable prism housing, I may clean it up just to try it out a few times. Never took pictures with a SLR using that feature,, always wanted to. I guess this lens is a Cosina made for Dixon, not for the Miranda but the OM; if I see one or one of its stable mates for OM at a nice price I will try to buy it. Not so sure about the OM-30 (OMF in US) my favorites of the double digits is OM40 (OMPC), OM20, OM10 then the OM-30. Many like the OM10 with the manual adapter, if they are not use to using a lens shutter dial, for SLRs oddly shutters speed on the lens what I have mostly used; Olympus and Vougtlander. Even a rangefinder I had when I was little had the shutter control on the dial.

Hi Nigel, have you done an episode on how you develop your own B&W film and then how you scan your images to digital?. IF not would you be up for doing an episode along those lines?. I used to develop my own Black and white films then print them for a period of time many decades ago. But would need my memory jogged as to the techniques. Thanks, really enjoying your channel 😊 👌

There is some real treasure to be found in some of the 'lesser' vintage brands. I've been trying some Petri lenses recently (orphaned bayonet mount being the major barrier but pretty easy to overcome) and the performance of some, particularly the 55/1.4, has been quite eye-opening.
@zenography7923

I must try some Petri lenses soon - I've left it too long!
@spectralcav
@spectralcav 8 ай бұрын
@@zenography7923 The main problem with Petri is the lack of adapters for the bayonet mount used on most of their SLR lenses. You have to be a little inventive to adapt them to a mirrorless camera. There is a relatively easy solution but it's too long-winded to go into here! Their early lenses were M42 mount but are quite sought after and can be expensive. The bayonet mount was introduced in 1960. They went back to M42 mount some time in the 70s but were struggling at this time so were largely rebranding third party lenses. The later M42 'CC Auto' 55mm f2 and f1.8 seem to be Petri designs.

Agree on the Petri 55/1.4, I believe they call it the poor man's Pancolar (55/1.4). It has an optical scheme similar to both the Pancolar and Contarex 55/1.4. Beautiful lens.
@spectralcav
@spectralcav 8 ай бұрын
@@opadaaf Sadly, being a poor man, the Pancolar 55/1.4 is out of reach. The Petri has a very similar optical scheme but has no thoriated elements and the rear element of the Petri lens is huge, more like an element from an f1.2 lens. Who knows how the two lenses compare?
@opadaaf
@opadaaf 8 ай бұрын
@@spectralcav I am fortunate to have both but only since a couple of weeks so I haven't done a direct comparison yet. My impression is that both are comparably sharp wide open and the Pancolar has wilder bokeh than the Petri. On a sidenote, and with an apology to @zenography7923 for dwelling from the subject of this video, another very interesting fast fifty seems to be the 8-element Miranda 50/1.4, which I am currently looking for.

I've just looked up Miranda on Camera Wiki and the original company existed from 1946/7 to 1976 when it went bust. The name was later used on cameras and lenses made by Cosina (surprise surprise!) which is obviously what this is. Maybe they bought the rights to the name, or maybe it just lapsed so they appropriated it.
@zenography7923
@zenography7923 8 ай бұрын
As I understand it, the name was bought by the Dixon's chain of stores, who then sub-contracted manufacture to Cosina. I don't think they were sold outside of the Dixon's stores, although Cosina kit obviously was.

Thank you for this video! I doubt that I will ever find a copy for sale, but it fascinates me based on the images and specs you included in the video. I only have one adaptor, OM to M43 mount and I have no interest in going the multiple adaptor route and I'm very happy with my 50mm f1.8 zuiko... the sharpness seems similar and the colors of this lens seem different but very nice. My problem is that my lens renders at 100mm now... I would LOVE to see this on a modern M43 camera because of the 48mm ratio, the macro possibilities and the possibility of even nicer bokeh (than what you could show on the full frame camera). Will you be doing this video on a Em5 or EM1? Also, how does the contrast compare to the 50mm f1.8 zuiko with a lens hood? Thanks
@zenography7923
@zenography7923 8 ай бұрын
I'll feature this another time on M43, no worries. Depending on conditions, contrast can compare to the Zuikos. I don't think you'd see too much difference.

Many Lenses can be "sharp" with a full frame 24 megapixels sensor camera, but often you will get in "trouble" with higher megapixel sensor full frame Cameras or APSC cameras with 24 megapixels sensor. The Miranda 24mm Lens was made by Cosina in Japan.

Seems similar to the fabled Chinon lenses which may, or may not, be Tomiokas. I'm not keen on the CA to be honest, Nigel, the results seem similar to those from my Prinzflex (another Dixons product) 28mm f2.8 Admittedly it is not a 24mm but the results exhibit the same colour rendition, and unfortunately the same CA. I'm still searching for the perfect superwide lens at a reasonable - sub £100 - price. Ah well, the search continues.

You often see SLRs on Ebay vaguely described as "with lens", obviously by someone who doesn't know much about cameras or lenses. I suppose it's usually going to be a standard or kit lens but occasionally something more interesting. Were Miranda lenses only sold in the UK? If so then I assume they were sold in other countries under different names, eg Hanimex in Australia.

Don’t remember hearing the story of Miranda being picked up by Dixon’s. Pity. I remember from the 60’s and 70’s Miranda was a highly desired camera by me, so much that I have collected quite a few camera bodies and lenses, a lot of which were branded Miranda but made by the likes of Soligor. Dixon’s ‘Miranda’ is probably similar to Bell and Howell and Vivitar being acquired by lord knows who, and certainly not the original photographic outfits. Way of the world I guess.
@randallstewart1224
@randallstewart1224 4 ай бұрын
Right. Miranda made very high quality and innovative 35mm SLR cameras from the mid-1950s. It was a small company and could not afford to keep up with technological advances as such cameras became ever more electronic. Their last new model sought to make that leap to compete with the Oly On and Pentax M-series, but it was buggy, and Miranda could not afford to fix it, so they closed instead. The Miranda trade name was sold off, and its use here has nothing to do with the original company or its products. In fact, Miranda never made a lens, so marking this lens as "Miranda" is even sillier.
