Planning on getting a Turkish oud found a teacher online I think you follow him. If I learnt how to play Turkish oud could I transfer those skills onto the Arabic Oud or would I need a teacher 🧑🏫

Yes, of course you can transfer the skills. But you still will benefit and learn faster with even a little instruction from a teacher. It was the same for me. I learned Oud the Persian method with Persian music and a Persian master, but it took a long time to get the vibe of Arabic music when I started studying it myself. Also, you will benefit from getting exposed to good solid repertoire. So having a teacher at some point is helpful, but there's a lot of overlap in the basic physicality of playing the Oud.

Great stuff! What tuning do you use here? I use the Turkish tuning, but I don’t get the relation between the final notes you play with the open fifth string and the maqams starting note. For me to get the same notes, my finger rests on the same position on both strings. Thanks in advance! Edit: is it DGADGC? I had mine tuned to “Syrian” (Oud tuner app on iOS), which is CFADGC

I use CFADgc (low string to high)

maqams like Rast and Bayati are made to beautify the QURAN and NOT MUSIC. Music is forbidden for muslims so learn to have some respect

Al-Farabi, Zeryab, Al-Kindi, Avicenna, Ibn Kurr all blasphemous heretics!
