Our 190 Shifter Kart is FAST, but has a HUGE Problem

Our 190cc 5 speed shifter kart is fast! We do have a huge problem with our home made yard kart killer- an unknown driveline clunk that makes the chain come off. It could be a number of problems- our Zongshen 190cc 5 speed pit bike engine could be making so much power that its flexing the frame, we. could have worn out keys on our live axle, and it could all be made worse by bad gearing. In today's episode, we discover and try to fix the issues!
Thanks for Watching!

Always put your chain tensioner on the loose side when under load, putting it on the torque side defeats the purpose because it loosens up when on the throttle. You guys did a hell of a good job and this is my favorite build so far. Also Charles is a great addition to the team!

One of the coolest things I see both John and Charles doing is talking to Issac when they have a problem. Both of them are very good at what they do but have no issues at all asking for suggestions from Issac who has been doing this most likely since his childhood. It takes a big man to ask for help and an even bigger one to do so with hundreds of thousands of people seeing it online. The dynamic you guys have is just awesome. Love the friendship and respect you all have for each other. It's one of the top reasons I watch you guys. Cheers, hope you all had a great Christmas and have a great New Year as well.

Yep! Top of the chain will be tight while exerting torque to rear; thereby dumping loose chain to underside of front pulley. Definitely put tensioner on bottom, please.
@yeliab814
@yeliab814 2 жыл бұрын
Tensioner should be pivoting and squeeze top AND bottom together. It will ride to the position it needs to depending on whether torque is being applied as well as coming off the gas in which case the bottom will tighten up and move the slack to the top. the tensioner needs to accommodate both

Hey guys you're doing great stuff all the years! We built a 5speed shifter years ago, and we mounted the clutch level right on the shifts tick, so you can basically shift up and down by using only you right hand, which makes it waaaay easy to go fast and control your yard dart in fast corners aaaand you don't have to switch with your feet! Just an idea, maybe it will work out for you as well! KEEP UP YOUR GREAT WORK!!!!
@srharris88
@srharris88 2 жыл бұрын
I know they have done that in the past. On the really fast karts they put in a foot pedal clutch and paddle shifters on the wheel so they can keep both hands on the wheel while shifting gears. Might be good on this project though.

I run into the chain loosening issue all the time with overhead door motors. What you need, if there's shaft room, is what's called a spreader bar. Essentially it's two bearings with an adjustable bar between them. What this effectively does is to keep your two sprockets an equal and even distance apart. The only way to generate chain slop after that is by stretching the chain under load. And believe me, there's WAY more load on an overhead door motors than you could ever generate with your go kart.

Spring loaded chain tentioning is most likely required with that long span chain set up. I also cant help but wonder about sprocket to sprocket alignment changing when things get flexed over uneven terrain with the long distance between the suspention attachment point way forward in the cart and so far away from the axle centerline.
@isomer13
@isomer13 2 жыл бұрын
Great build. Good ideas too. I'm thinking you need a "pinching" type chain tensioner. Spring-loaded - so no matter what the forces are - it keeps the chain tension taut. Just a thought. I'm pretty sure you can come up with a "twin" tensioner. Also, I forget which build it was, but you tried rubber engine mounts, and they flexed a bit too much. You can get sheet neoprene rubber in squares or strips, etc.(12"x12" square is about 20 bucks on E-Bay.) Just go for a high shore hardness value. Buna-M is the type. I'm thinking somewhere in the 70-90 shore range. It can be had in thicknesses from 1/16" up to an inch, or possibly more, I reckon. Thanks guys.

Those catterpillers are called woolly bears, or "Woolly Boogers" as we know them here in KY. They turn into a beautiful tiger moth. These guys are completely harmless and are fun to fart around with cause they bundle up into a ball, their hair is course, makin them able to roll around in your hand. These guys are just your normal caterpillars but the color bands are connected to a legend that the more black they have on them the worst the winter, more brown is lighter winter. Great job on the build guys!

I agree about the chain tensioner is to close to the front. Moving it about half way back and spring loaded too. The spring loading will maintain the right tension through out the travel of the rear axle.

If you guys plan on running this engine at higher rpm for a while, more than a couple minutes at a time, get an oil catch can on there. The ZS engine likes to spew oil out the crankcase breather vent under those conditions. I also think your idle is still a touch low, set to 2000rpm when warm. Great build and can't wait to see its laptime!

Thes video's are alway's very good and a joy to watch. In my opinion Charles is a perfect addition to your channel he seems very capable in his abilities to perform welding, mechanical and electrical and a great sense of what it takes to work well with others. Even when Ike is acting like a real jerk it just flows off Charles like water off a ducks back. Great channel even as a 68 year old geaser brings back so many memories of building the first go cart and mini bike at age 12 to hundreds of projects in my own Welding and Repair shop for 26 years in a small farming community in S.D enjoyed every minute of so many projects. Thanks to you for many hrs of trial and error until all the problems finally comes too, hopefully that satisfying moment when it's working perfect. Every one who works in fabrication or repairs as a mechanic, welder, electrician knows that special feeling when your mind and your hands create some thing useful or fun and l projects. Now every body can enjoy your work and learn a million things from watching every thing on computers and wireless cell phones. To possibly over a million video's called diy videos on KZfaq truly amazing where we have come from to where we are today.
