Check out where we lived for 5 months! The Antarctic is a harsh harsh place, but it's bearable when you have so much to do! We take you on a tour of our town, through McMurdo Station, ANTARCTICA!
Special Thanks to Rachel Heckerman for allowing us to use some of her epic shots of penguins!

I'm really glad that you enjoyed the stunning beauty of the Summer environment and enjoyed the station. It felt like home after my 9mths - I was so sad to leave. I hope I get to see a sky literally filled with auroras again in my lifetime. McMurdo Winter-over Apr2016 - Jan2017

This is so interesting. It's really hard to imagine what living there is like but it seems a lot more comfortable than I thought it would be. I guess you need to make sure that people who spend so much time there can still have a somewhat 'normal' life. So much cool stuff!

I had a friend in high school who’s mother was a regular National Geographic Magazine photographer for decades and she did an ‘explorer-in-residence year long stint at McMurdo and loved it. I don’t remember much of her exact recollections but I do remember her say she lost almost fifteen pounds in the winter even though she ate more gourmet pizza and chocolate and pasta than anytime in her life lol. She said it’s so cold and so difficult in the winds and snow that you apparently burn calories like nobody’s business 😆

On my way to Casey Station, (Aussies) we got stuck at McMurdo for 7 days due to weather. I've wintered over aswell at Mawson Station, (Aussie). Loved the video, sad to hear about the coffee house, I spent so much time in there. Antarctica is a special place, it has a lasting effect on you. Nice couple. Thanks for the tour. I've often fantasized about spending a winter there. Something about the sub-zero temperatures, with the wind raging and snow coming down so fiercely it causes whiteout conditions, but I'd be snug as the proverbial bug in the protective cocoon of my little McMurdo home. Now I have to find a cute, sweet Leah of my own and convince her to travel there with me. Oh, yeah-I'l also need to pick up a bachelor of science degree of some sort. Thanks for the interesting tour, you guys. Your enthusiasm and zest for adventure were such a joy to see. Kiss and hug a penguin or two or me, Leah, dear. Take care. Later...

That is amazing! you guys are going to have so much fun! Unfortunately, no, McMurdo Station only sees visitors a couple times a year for 2 -3 hours if any. At this time they have suspended all visitors to the station in an effort to keep Antarctica the last continent without coronavirus. Other bases are more assessable and more willing to let tourist in, so touring a science base is still possible. You guys are going to have so much fun!

@@guoyaoteam I'd look into the Antarctic cruise tours (quite often Russian icebreakers) operating out of Punta Arenas in southern Argentina - they tend to concentrate their visits around the area near South America, where there are lots of Antarctic stations. But there is the rare tourist ship that visits McMurdo briefly. An alternative is Union Glacier, which seems to be an independently operated camp, that has professional tour companies and have flights in and out. But yes, I'm sure your research has revealed quite a few options - good luck and I hope you really enjoy the trip.

The buildings are heated and mostly kept at normal room temperature (~20degC?), though some of the downstairs shower drains do freeze over and block with ice, due to the connection to external plumbing. During Winter the majority of buildings are shutdown and "Winterized", so less energy is wasted keeping the minimal infrastructure running for the smaller Winter crew (~140 people, compared to 1000+ during Summer).
