Unfortunately, 3D Print Direct was unable to get a “product” defined on TreatStock as they had hoped due to a limitation with how the TS site works. They do have plenty of the Tan 64 on hand and have been taking orders for the Mini 1702 and Perifractics Mini 1541! www.treatstock.com/c/3dprintdirect Standard disclaimer, no sponsorship, no reciprocation, etc. The owner, Garth is a personal friend of ours that has helped us out a lot over the past few months. So we thought we would try and throw a bit of business his way. Plus, he does really nice work!

The screen look far better than I would have expected, given the very small size. The Leather Goddesses of Phobos text was easily readable.

It's hard to tell from the video, but when we were shooting the game play part I had to sit behind and to the side of the camera facing the screen, so I was a good 2 feet away from the screen. Even that far back it was really easy to see the screen and it was very playable. Very impressed considering the price point of the donor monitor

This is incredible! Perfect for the C64 mini. I'm thinking this would be great to go with the NES mini as well. I'm totally going to build one. What do you need to do to get the color match for parts printed at 3D Print Direct? I'm able to upload the 3D models, get a quote, select PLA for material, but none of the color options look quite right. I'm also very glad to have stumbled across your channel today. These are great projects. Thanks for sharing.
@Operation8Bit3 жыл бұрын
Hi Bret, we're happy you stumbled across us as well, and thank you very much for the compliments. 3D Print Connect is finalizing everything to get the monitor setup as a product on their Treatstock site with the color match option. Look for the Tan option, this is the Jessie Tan 64 that I used for the 1541 drive.
@bstaehling3 жыл бұрын
@@Operation8Bit That makes more sense. It will be easier if they have it ready to go. The less there is for me to mess up the better. I'll keep an eye out for it to go up on Treatstock. Thanks for letting me know. Looking forward to seeing more about the 1541 and the printer as well.

Ive been looking into making a fake CRT using such methods, but am tempted to mold a sheet of hard plastic to give it a fake rounded look on the screen side's
@Operation8Bit3 жыл бұрын
We toyed around with a similar idea for our Modern Retro Hackintosh build. The idea was that we could heat a sheet of plexiglass and then form it around a real CRT to get the shape. Keep us in the loop if you decide to do the build. 👍

I've been on a hard core C64 kick now that the C64 maxi is available for preordered in North america, the other day I was thinking I would love to get an old c64 monitor that's dead just to I could gut it into an hdmi tv for my maxi
@Operation8Bit3 жыл бұрын
Not a bad idea, we toyed with that idea a few times as well while we were doing the Mac restoration video (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e5mTodeIxN3Ud4k.html). The trick is finding a screen of the right size that would replace the original 13" CRT and fit properly. Please let us know if you come up with something!

@@Operation8Bit from the research I've done the best I've found is either 10". Can't find a 13" LCD Panel with the correct ratio. I would love to modify the 3D Files and scale them to a larger ratio for the C64 Maxi.

@@immersion726 I came across this one a few weeks back, it's a little smaller at 12" but I think it might do the trick; www.amazon.com/dp/B07S9ZDS9R/?coliid=I1VGUZFQ5OKFED&colid=29GMDGBMJ39JQ&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

How are you gonna do a printer for the Mini when there is no way to output to the USB?
@Operation8Bit3 жыл бұрын
That is becoming the million dollar question. I have a prototype for a working scale USB printer, but getting the mini to communicate with it is the real challenge that I haven't found a solution too. BTW: you are the first to comment on this, glad to know someone was paying attention all the way to the end :-)

My original model had the buttons just a bit too small. The latest version is better, but you might need to take a small nail file and open them up just a little bit more. One of our other viewers (Bret Staehling) got his buttons working perfectly. If you do decide to make one, send me an email support@operation8bit.org and I'll provide a few other tips & tricks for getting your build to come out great

@@Operation8Bit Thanks for the reply! As it turns out it appears this model was discontinued so is being replaced by a newer model with different button locations. I ordered the last one from US amazon.com but it was lost in transit.

@@thebitplanes8188 I hate when that happens. I was looking at this display (amzn.to/3661NLX) for a different project I was thinking about, and there is this one that I just found (amzn.to/3k3Dovo) but not sure if either of these would work for you and I don't know if they will fit in the bezel I created
@bstaehling3 жыл бұрын
Peri, I was able to get the buttons working on my 1702 mini. I used Tony's newer model, which has the openings opened up a bit more. I found that the button spacing on the 1702 was slightly wider than the buttons from the donor monitor. The buttons from the donor monitor are connected together with a thin piece of plastic. I decided to clip the buttons apart so they could be free to locate where they need to and it worked fine. I did take a file to the openings lightly but probably didn't need to do that. Hoping you can still recover the donor monitor you ordered. I was really happy with how this turned out and think it would be well worth the wait if it comes back in stock.
@thebitplanes81883 жыл бұрын
UPDATE: I ordered what appears to be the extremely common low cost 8" monitor from Amazon that I imagine can be found anywhere. The main issue is the buttons are completely different - round or oval and there are only 5 of them. I reworked the front of the model and added a 3D printable button strip and posted those as remixes on Thingiverse.

@Operation8Bit3 жыл бұрын
Fair enough. The only reason I could offer is that it's what the donor monitor had, so I designed it to that. Otherwise I would have just wound up clipping one of them off and the extra would sit in a box until I came up with another project, or worse it would get damaged and become eWaste.
