EDIT: Well we thought this was going to be our next boat, but the deal fell apart. Needs more money to be spent on it than we have. Details in the next video.
When you find the right boat, you know it. Still have some details to hammer out, but Chris White's Atlantic 55 Javelin will fit the bill perfectly for us. In this episode, we make the trip to Mexico to check out the boat and see if she's the one. If it all works out, this will be a continuation of a journey we started on this very dock 19 years ago....the same time Javelin was built.

Hey there friends. I made a few mistakes in the video that I will clear up in a future video. The boards are pivot centerboards, which is a different thing than a daggerboard. The centerboard retracts on impact so they are basically unbreakable. I called it an escape hatch, but according to CW, calling it an escape hatch is actually a misnomer. The hatch is intended to allow entry inside the boat if capsized. The reason you want to go inside is that one of the key features of this design is the entire forepeak of each hull can function as a safe and dry habitation space in the event of capsize. Also, Chris tells me he can do all the engine checks from the aft compartment and doesn't need to tear up the bed. More to follow....of course.

A wise move is to ask Chris to inspect the whole boat, specially those cracks. Best wishes
@LoanwordEggcorn

It's also possible to do pivot asymmetrical boards, but either way the pivoting feature in many ways is better than daggerboards since they pivot up and out of the way in a collision with something. Hit something hard enough with a daggerboard and at a minimum you damage a tens of thousands of dollar daggerboard, and (potentially much) worse if the daggerboard trunk is damaged.

Hope this all works out.... Its the boat you wanted and can be fettled to fit as well as updated. You can fit covers to the nets for when your at anchor or light weather sailing..and roll them up for when your facing full on passage making.

He even goes so far as to sort out what the inverted water line likely is to give an idea of what the boat might be like to survive on while capsized. He discusses the importance of having reserve buoyancy in the decking so the inverted water line would sit higher instead of leaving the entire vessel awash.

@@TheOKellys The last time I spoke with Chris about boats he said the reason he now favoured the 55' size was that it could handle the weight of all the stuff that people figured that they needed. I think I got the sense he was somewhat in the category too (I'd love to know what he considers 'needed' these days, his days of sailing a Searunner trimaran, and then Juniper are a long time ago now). I am super interested to see where you end up. There's a lot of hard decisions, tough choices and 'what if' scenarios to consider, especially for a circumnavigation. It makes for a mighty big and expensive boat though.

O"Kelly"s hi from Calgary Canada. Thanks so much for sharing all of that I'm blown away by the Chris White design she's amazing in most every way. His design approach addresses almost every questionable design decision of other cats. The forward cockpit, interior helm, lower galley, dedicated work space and swing away dagger boards my personal favorites. Sure she's 20 years used but maintained impeccably and designed for 50. What a bummer of a boat. 🥺 A 55 footer with the saloon of a 39, a helm position where you get your fair share of sunburn and the perfect salt water pressure wash, bare hulls in the cabins without any rack or cabinet. This looks pretty much like a weekender that gives you just the right amount of pain to not sink the damn bugger but put it back into its berth for a few more weeks. It pretty much misses out on the „live“ in „liveaboard“. But hey - if you‘re happy with it… 🍻

But the boat has been designed by a very special person with very special thoughts and ideas. There‘s a reason why helmstations offer as much protection from the elements as possible (which is why I despise some of the older Outremers as well). If you‘re crossing the Atlantic in the „wrong“ direction or the Pacific in whatever direction I‘m pretty sure you have to be harder than a Spartan to really enjoy it. 😉

@@spaRTan3246 The concerns that you bring forward do not seem to be born out in practice by the people who have done voyages in Atlantic cats. If that's the case I haven't seen them in the 30 years or so that I've been watching this design. I wouldn't change many decisions I've made in my life, but not being able to get myself into one of these boats is a regret. Then I'd be able to speak from a position of personal experience.

🇨🇦Bill Morgan London On Great pick, been a fan of his boats for years. I have been following you two for a while and when I saw you on his boats and that you met him I knew you would buy one of his boats, well done.

Wonderful design and great performance yacht. This is my kind of boat. The trade-offs between performance and comfort are great. Bulkhead to hull cracks are not too bad may need to add some bi-directional stratification. Lightning strikes many times are a major problem.

Re: life raft. When I had a Manta 40, I did multiple Gomex crossings without a LR , using your logic. Then a friend reminded me that there is one thing that will force you to abandon ship - FIRE. That’s when you want a life raft…

Hi Nick and Megan, You can just change that solar with a new 550 watt panel and add others over the tender. I hope you are able to add air con which you will appreciate in the tropics. Really needs a gate in the lifeline midship. Great boat hopefully fast. Cutter rigged. A friend modified his bowsprit to fold up so he would be charged less at a marina!!! André in Sydney see you when you get here.

Congrats indeed. You two with your long experience have cast a steady, appraising eye on Javelin. Sounds like she passes the eye tests. Now the invisible parts will be judged by your inspectors. All good. (You need to find a home for your modern life raft). Like your reactions to this speedy looking cat. I will be interested to see how she performs under lots of sail in a stiff wind. Sharp hulls and long waterline…Fast I bet!

Hi from Canada 🇨🇦 😎🥰 There was only one thing that came to our minds when you questioned a life raft….it is also an escape incase of fire. Love your channel! We’ve been watching for years and now that we are both retired we will be joining the live aboard/sailing trend! Keeping our eyes out for a 40’ Cat. 👍🏻 Hope to see you on the water!

A serious boat with some thoughtful design decisions. Good bones. A solid base to make it your own. Whew. Can breathe again! And Nick went below more smoothly the second time!

I'm so jealous!!! The first time that I saw a Chris White boat I fell in Love! The quality is everywhere, and so thoughtfully laid out. They are the boats I dream about. You will love this boat. When I saw you on Chris's Atlantic 72 I thought that if you could you would end up on one of his designs.
