They are those of Valentina Vezzali and young Matilde Pocaterra, the stars of a special day just days before the London Olympics. No presentations of Valentina are necessary; she is the Italian flag bearer at the next Olympics where she hopes to win her fourth consecutive gold in the women's individual foil event. Matilde, on the other hand, is a child of ten who hopes that one day research can help cure a genetic disease that prevents the use of her limbs: spinal muscular atrophy type 2.
Valentina and Matilda both know that the road to victory is still long, but are conscious of not being alone. The fencing champion will have an entire country cheering her on when she will make her final thrust; and Matilda can count on very special fans -- those who believe in research, and with their generosity, support Telethon.
Finding a cure for every single person suffering from a genetic disease is our challenge. Help us to win.
