The members of ATEEZ were very close pre-debut because they were the first and only trainees of KQ. However, the only members who were friends before joining KQ were Mingi and Yunho and Wooyoung and Yeosang, and none of them were a "ask your friend to audition" situation. Mingi and Yunho were best friends for 4 years pre-audition and then auditioned separately without the other knowing until they both showed up after being accepted. XD Yeosang and Wooyoung were trainees at BigHit (bts label, now HYBE) and Yeosang left to join KQ. A few months later Wooyoung followed him there.

When Yeosang left HYPE to audition for KQ, Wooyoung followed him, despite being one of the faves to debut, as part of TXT. Some of the members were friends before auditioning at KQ but I want to stress on that their chemistry is the result of a lot of work. They train together for years, live together, had a meeting every week were they talked about they issues together. It is something they can be proud of! They are all super close because they spent a lot of time together as trainees under the name KQ Fellaz. The only ones who knew each other first were Yunho/Mingi and Wooyoung/Yeosang. Yunho and Mingi went to the same dance academy. They kept in touch even though they went to different school. Yunho would walk to Mingi’s school to have lunch with him since Mingi was a slow eater and none of his friends at his school wanted to wait for him. They unknowingly auditioned for the KQ. The song Youth and performance is part of their journey and call with each other before their audition. You should check that performance out. It also depicts Mingi’s struggle with his mental health and he was on hiatus and Yunho was there to check in on him and help pick him up. Wooyoung/Yeosang were trainees at Big Hit/Hybe. They are besties so when Yeosang left to KQ, Wooyoung followed him despite excelling every monthly evaluations at Hype. Yeosang had to pretend to not know Wooyoung when he first came to KQ, but it didn’t last long. Wooyoung said that he wanted to succeed with Yeosang and if they fail then they will fail together. Wooyoung was the last to join the group and Hongjoong (the captain/leader) said that Wooyoung was the key in making Ateez so tight-knit because he was so social and charismatic. Wooyoung met his best friend-soulmate in San. Together they are amicus ad aras, and they both got a matching tattoo of this saying. KQ wasn’t looking for trainees at the time, but a staff found Hongjoong’s mixtape when they were packing to move to a different building. It had been sitting in the office for over a year, but the staff had decided to listen to it and then pass it on to the CEO. Hongjoong became the first trainee at KQ. Seonghwa unknowingly trained under the same teacher as Hongjoong. The teacher told Seonghwa that his previous student was just accepted into a company, so if Seonghwa worked hard then he will succeed also. Seonghwa always looked up to and admire this mysterious student. When Seonghwa was accepted at KQ, he found out that Hongjoong was the student that his teacher mentioned. Jongho trained for years at Top Media and had a very traumatic experience there. When he first came to KQ, he was very reserved and serious. He didn’t want to make friends because in his experience the trainees were always coming and going. He didn’t want to get hurt anymore. However, Ateez didn’t let up especially Wooyoung, and they all helped him grow and glow. It’s all Destiny!! Ateez’s fandom name is Atiny which is a combination of Ateez+Destiny. They have a song called Star 1117 dedicated to Atiny for date of when Ateez finally decided on their fandom name. Side note: Some of the 4th gen groups are connected. When Wooyoung and Yeosang were trainees at Big Hit/Hybe, Wooyoung was best friends with Yeonjun from TXT. Yeonjun and San also went to school together and were good friends. Wooyoung and Changbin from Stray Kids also knew each other in high school since a common friend used to bring Changbin over to Wooyoung’s house. When Wooyoung saw Changbin again, he approached Changbin and asked if he remembered Wooyoung. He said he did and they became close and now best friends. Wooyoung introduced Changbin to Yeonjun, and now all of them are besties. They call each other “darlings,” so the fans dubbed them The Darlings.

Oh, about the friend thing. Yunho and Mingi were actually good friends before auditioning for KQ, they were in the same dance academy if I remember correctly and had an amaznig connection back then too. Wooyoung and Yeosang were best friends and trained together in bighit (with txt'x members), when Yeosang left BigHit, Wooyoung went after him and auditioned for KQ too, he said to Yeosang "If I fail I want to fail with you, If a suceed I want to suceed with you". There's another coincidence. When Seonghwa was deciding if he should audition to be and idol or leave it be, one of his teachers told him about an amazing trainee to inspire him. That trainee was Hongjoong. Hongjoong found out many years later when Seonghwa talked about that on a magazine interview. Also, usually the trainee life is very hard and trainees tend to be very competitive because not everyone gets to debut, making it hard to be friends with your fellow trainees from the same company. But Wooyoung is a social butterfly and, even if he was the last one to join the company, he has been described as the glue of the group. He's the one responsible to make them a group of friends instead of only coworkers. And that's about it, I think.

Yeosang is also low voices and Jongho can actually sing pretty low but rarely does because Mingi or Yeosang sing the lower parts. Jongho has some covers with lower register singing and just competed on Immortal Songs as a soloist. They were put together by their company. Yeosang and Wooyoung were at Big Hit together before switching to KQ and Yunho and Mingi were at the same dance academy together and signed with KQ without the other knowing.

in regards to whether they just formed a group themselves or whether they were placed together: Umu obvsly got it right that they just all auditioned at the same label. the funny thing about ateez is that a lot of them knew each other beforehand, before even auditioning at their company, KQ Ent. Wooyoung and Yeosang were both trainees at BigHit before Yeosang left for Kq, Wooyoung quickly following after. Yunho and Mingi (the low voiced rapper) had been friends before too, even dancing at the same dance studio for quite a while (and then auditioning completely separate from each other and both getting accepted). Otherwise, i think it's fair to say that they all formed a quite close bond together, since there were so few trainees at Kq - Hongjoong (the leader, high voiced rapper) being the only one there until Yunho joined. They all, esp. Wooyoung and Yeosang often joke about how long they've been friends for. But overall, no, they were placed in the same group by the company and not coincidentally friends that can all just perform really well.

I love that they are calling attention to the high notes *and* the operatic quality… my personal nickname for Jongho is “Rock Opera”
