This weekend we tried one of the most-suggested comments from our paver patio and fire pit video. Tons of people said “increase your air flow!” So, we did - and thank you to everyone who suggested it! However. . .we'll leave it up to you to judge whether or not the fire pit is actually less smoky than it was before.

You have to run a pipe to supply oxygen to the very bottom of the fire, and to make it truly smokeless you’d need a small blower. The only way to get rid of smoke is to make the fire hotter, and air is usually the variable that controls how hot it gets (assuming your wood is dry). If there’s not much of a breeze in your yard, you could also put a small blower in front of one of the opening you made in the bottom.

I think everyone that builds their own fire pit always makes this mistake the first time. Everyone building a fire tends to make this mistake too. You don't just pile up wood and light it on fire, you need to kind of stagger the logs or build that iconic teepee like structure that you associate with the boyscouts. Fires are all about the airflow.

If you take away a row or even two to the fire pit, it will feel more like a camp fire, you will actually get to see the fire and coles. You will get to enjoy more of the heat from the fire, and get less smoke because it will receive more oxygen which creates a hotter fire which results in less smoke. 😁. Love your channel, just found it tonight.

Cut out holes in the top third of your metal ring that sits inside. This way, the gaps in the lowest layer of bricks brings air in, the air travels upwards towards the holes in a gap between the metal ring and bricks, goes inward through the holes and uniformly attacks the smoke in the middle. The warmth from the fire contributes to this draft and should dramatically reduce smoke. Good luck! Edit: Here's a great link that explains the same idea from HAXMAN. He went the route of also making his own top concrete slabs, but I think you guys are good on those! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p9-aq86d3snKemg.html

You also have to consider weather conditions. Atmospheric pressure and wind greatly affect the fire. It appears to be a relatively calm day and, with that sunshine, you are likely in a high pressure system. The woodstove at my family farm always had trouble burning cleanly under those conditions.

I don't see many people mentioning using wood that is quite dry ... The moisture content will determine how smokey it will burn. This is why you see stacks of wood left outside during the year, to give the wood time to dry out enough. The best moisture percentage is between 10 and 20%. There are meters you can buy for that. Good air flow helps, but it's not the cure-all.

If you drill 1/2" holes about 2" apart and about 2" down from the top of the ring, you'll get added airflow into the top of the fire. That will ignite the smoke before it leaves the pit. I believe the ring sits about 3 - 4" above the bottom of the pit, eliminating the need for any pipe or blower. Just pull the bottom layer of blocks away from the ring until you have about a 1/2" gap between the blocks. No removal of blocks needed and you maintain the joints in the blocks as you stack them. It also needs to get very hot in order to work properly ( which it will). I did this in my pit a few days ago. Works great! VERY little smoke..

There are many videos showing how to make a smokeless fire pit. Bro Builds, you should take the time to view them. You only have two things to do to get your fire pit smokeless. Drill holes in the metal ring and leave about an inch between the bricks and the metal fire ring.

Hey guys, what might help is a sheet metal cone above the fire which will act as a chimney to "draw" air into the fire. What you need is air flow, and the rising exhaust gases will provide the suction required via the heated chimney. Downside is you might chew through wood faster.

The reason why there is less smoke with the holes at the bottom it’s because it provides more oxygen, therefore the fire will burn hotter making it essentially cleaner.

Smoke is unburnt fuel due to lack of oxidizer. One way to avoid that is to use drier wood, or even coal for that matter. OR built a way to "suck" air through the fire pit. Live a venturi tube. If those openings on the bottom had that venturi shape, air will rush in faster IMO.

You need about a 1.5 inch gap between the pavers and the ring. Then you need air holes at the top of the ring. The air will come in at the bottom and into the top of the fire pit giving a better burn and less smoke.
@pikeevans8559
@pikeevans8559 3 жыл бұрын
I know nothing about this other than what I have watched on other channels. What I think I noticed was that between your metal insert, and the outside bricks, there should be an empty space of about an inch or two, which allows the cold air to rise between the metal liner and the brick. The bottom holes allow for more air at the bottom...then the the air that flows to the top holes becomes heated as it rises and is forced out of the top holes a little more to create that second burn that eats up the smoke. Also it works better when the fire gets really hot. Not as much when it first starts.
