10th May 2024 Last month of Autum in SE Queensland. Getting to know Bailey, our first lap-dog... what a joy, he's so funny, makes us smile all the time. Bath time, play time, feed time & sleep time... not forgetting naughty time, piddle time & poo time, mostly outside.

When I was a kid we used to raise these little guys. Tiny puppies just like this erunning all over the house. No kennels. My favorite dog breed!

Bailey is adorable. My family had a smooth-haired mini dachshund when we were kids and my brother has had a succession of rough haired standard ones. All complete characters. Watch out for that 'lizard', Bailey!

Thanks very much, he's out on the lawn chewing on a bone he buried this morning, he thinks a bit of dirt improves the taste... he's such a funny Puppy, learning so fast, still very small. I put him in my jacket in the morning with just his head out, he's like a Joey in a kangaroo's pouch!!! more funny adventures of Bailey this weekend.

Lol, yes! We have a doxie we rescued from an animal shelter five years ago and she still acts like a puppy who just loves to chase after our pool cleaner( better known as Roxie) every day all around the pool. And as “it” peaks its head up, now and again,I never grow tired of her barking , “careful now , stay in that pool,that’s close enough ” at her frenemy😂. Thanks 4 the comment. Yes, we love him... so funny, he loves a cuddle and a bone. This is my first dog after my faithful Kelpie passed about 10 years ago. They are so good for you, all we talk about now is, 'Bailey'... I suggest you get another, best thing we'v done in years, should have done it years ago. Thanks for watching, more to come.

Give him a little treat after the bath each time, it'll make his first few bath times less traumatic for him. Also, when he finally becomes used to baths, he may even start looking forward to them because he knows he will always get a treat right after. Hope this helps and thanks for sharing.. - Darren

Arrrrrrr that is so sad, it breaks ya heart... it's taken me 10 years to get over my last kelpie, Blue. this little chap has made it all worthwhile... he just gone to sleep in my jacket as I write this 1 handed! uploading the next adventure very soon...keep in touch.

@@theHoptimist383 Good for oldies, they can be naughty, just like any baby. Patience will be rewarded. Bailey sleeps next to my side of the bed, he gets me up at 5 in the morning, but that's Ok, he loves a snuggle and he takes up a lot of time, so what I say... he make's me smile and what a good mate... what more can an old bloke want! I lost my 3 year old to ivdd 😢 he never jumped until one Sunday he decided to jump out of the car. They are the best babies. Hilarious and loyal. Congratulations 🎊 he’s gorgeous

S0 sorry to hear that, I had to look up ivdd, yes, we are as careful as we can be... but they are so fast and want to do their own thing. I have him in a pouch right now on my lap, he's such a wiggle first thing in the morning, he's like a 'joey' in a kangaroo's pouch, just his head sticking out as I write... thanks 4 writing, keep in touch. There is nothing like a miniature Dachshund...they have such special personalties. I have a year old long hair Miniature Dachshund and she is very a sweet dog with an incredible personality. So different from any other dog I have ever had. The best thing is that their poops are about the size of a tootsie roll. 😂

Our first lap-dog... best thing we have done in years, what a little chap. Just the thing for a couple of oldies like us, we love him... we call his poop's, cigaret buts! He's so easy to look after, and loves a cuddle, great fun. Thanks 4 watching more to come...

My beautiful Bella is now 4 years old and was gifted to us at 5 months old as the lady who owed her due to no fault of her own could not look after her. I regularly send pics to her and next week we are paying her a visit which will be wonderful for us all, Bella will never forget mummy number 1.

Greetings from Germany In the past, it was the gentleman's favorite companion in the house. For a daily walk to a beer garden. The dogs are famous for knowing exactly which plate there is still something on without being able to look at it

Good for you, sir. Do what you want. Our was a lap dog, never dug holes, and was not a barker unless someone was at the door. Very smart, and he was easy to train,the best dog never chewed up anything and never went to the bathroom in the house. Great dog 🐕 ❤

One thing I've got in old age is, patience. We never speak harshly to Bailey, time, we'll give him time. We ignore the naughty times, but smile to ourselves. We always praise the good thing's with a; good boy, good boy. In time we'll have the best behaved dog, right now Bailey rewards us with trust and love. What more could an old bloke want!

4.30 in the morning and guess who got me up... Bailey !!! he's gon bananas, running around, barking, being a naughty little puppy, but ya know what, I have to smile, so full of life. I had 2 get up make him some warm milk, put him in his sling/bag on my lap as I write 2 u one handed!... and now he's gone to sleep. thanks 4 writing, you'll have 2 get another doxie, make ya feel alive. Bailey is adorable! My husband and I live in Alabama, USA! We’ve owned two dachshunds. We had Pumpkin from 1997 until 2011. Pumpkin was like a daughter to us. It broke our heart when we lost her to congestive heart failure at the age of 14 in 2011. Pumpkin was a red short-haired full- blooded dachshund like Bailey..Bailey looks just like Pumpkin! After we lost Pumpkin, we decided we would get a rescue because there are so many dogs in shelters. We rescued our sweet Lily from a shelter when she was 6 months old. 💕That’s me and Lily on the day we rescued her from the shelter in 2011. She’s mostly dachshund, but we knew she had something in her other than dachshund because her legs were a little long! 🙂We did a DNA test just to know, and the test said her Mom’s side for 3 generations is all dachshund, but her Fathers’s side is a mix of beagle ( primarily) with a little Doberman ( crazy!), but she acts like a dachshund and people think she’s a dachshund when they meet her. Lily turns 13 this month. Lily and Pumpkjn have brought us so much joy over the years. We love them both so very much! Please watch out for those lizards around Bailey. When Pumpkin was 6 -8 weeks old, she would stay right beside us outside without running off. BUT, once she got to be about 10 weeks old, the dachshunds drive to hunt badgers kicked in, and we could not let her be loose outside without being on a leash or her prey drive would have made her run off into the fields and woods by our house and we would never have seen her again. Dachshunds are fearless to a fault and can easily get themselves into danger. I just wanted to mention this since you mentioned that you are a new dachshund owner. 💕❤️🌸I’m sure you’ll love Bailey as much as we love Lily and Pumkin. They are wonderful companions!

What a lovely comment, thank you. My Mother had 2 dashounds when I was a boy, I can still remember the male, called 'Jon vanderhum' Jonny 4 short, getting stuck in rabbit holes and getting lost; used to upset me no end. We also had Great-Danes 2 or 3 I can't quite remember (I'm 80 this year). All the doge we've had (married life) have been working Kelpies an Australian breed (very hyper active) they just love to work cattle/sheep/whatever they can round up. My last kelpie 'Blue' was my best friend he died 10 years ago and broke me heart... I just couldn't get another dog until I seen Bailey at 8 weeks old a month back. My wife reckons I fell in love on the spot... he has changed our life around for the better, the grandchildren adore him, like us. We live out in the country with wild animals all around, Possums on the roof, wallabies and bush-turkeys, goanna= lizards, Bandicoot's sometimes Kangaroo's (this is rainforest country) so yes, we must keep an eye on Bailey. I'm going to build gates on the ends of the veranda and stop him going out on the lawn, What we worry about is; wedge-tailed Eagles and Carpet snakes, both can get pretty big and would definitely snatch Bailey. We have a big house with 30 acres on the top of a hill... I have about 70 vids on KZfaq but never had much interest until we put up a video of Bailey, our children (6) call Bailey ... click-bait !! we have to smile at that... the last vid of Bailey has really got going. So nice to hear from you Mr. Buckley. You certainly have an interesting array of wildlife in Australia! My husband and I are in our early 60’s now and recently retired. We’ve lived in Alabama our entire life so the wildlife around here consists of squirrels,, rabbits, an occasional deer and maybe a red hawk, copperhead snake or coyote now and then. But we live in an urban neighborhood so we don’t see these things unless we are hiking, which we like to do. Yes, Bailey will certainly be click bait! Mini dachshunds are very popular, and for good reason! We love Lily. KZfaq knows we like dachshunds so KZfaq regularly presents us with dachshund videos.. that’s how we discovered Bailey! Your family lives in a beautiful area.

That Bailey is as smart as a Quantum computer ... he's so funny, we just love him... he loves scooting around the kitchen floor with his toys... and the other thing he loves is feed-time!! And a cuddle first thing in the morning, he has his accidents, but he's only a puppy... They are the best dog around, we have an 18 month old mini and she follows me everywhere and just wants to be around me or at least know where I am. You have made a great choice. Also worth mentioning that they will not back down from a fight so I would watch him around those lizards.

Thanks for taking the trouble to write, it's so interesting people and their dogs.Yes, Bailey follows me around in the morning and sit's on my feet and in the afternoon hie follows Sharon after she feeds him at midday. We drove down to the coast yesterday and went to a pet shop, shopping for Bailey! we got a sling so I don't have to carry him, he's in it now as I write, freeing up my hands some. we took some video from the car and in the pet shop, you can see it next time I post. The snakes and lizards go into hibernation very soon for winter; June to august... by then Bailey will be a bit bigger, we hope.

he's such a little wabit, we smile all the time, even when he's naughty. we have to be very aware of carpet snakes and wedge tailed eagles . the birds let us know of them 2 dangers most of the time but carpet snakes are very sneaky, not so much now as it's getting cold down under... I'm writing 1 handed the other is holding Bailey in my jacket!!!

Har, har... they like to eat! We went to the pet/dog shop yesterday, one hour drive from here and got a sling/pouch to go over my shoulder to put Bailey in, it's great, now I don't have to carry him. He is in it right now having a sleep on my lap while I write. You will be able to see it next time I upload a video. You will be able to sees in the shop, getting dog stuff. Winter in Australia starts next month, no snow in Queensland, but it gets very cold. Thanks for writing...

We care in the UK, and have a jack Russell 2 years old, and a 11 month old dachshund he is such a character, very funny, since he was born he has he has been with another dog, I had to take the jack for his booster jab yesterday, and leave the dachshund st home with my hubby, o dear he went bananas, I know they are prone to seperstion anxiety, he is very loving though.

Yes, we know all about separation anxiety . They are so bossy, they want it all their way... I think you have to be firm but fair. Bailey will do a wee if you leave him alone, even if he has just done one outside! and then you have the hyper energy, or going bonkers!!! We just smile, and let him burn it off... still, he can be very naughty... but he is just a baby. He will learn, he has to... we are the Boss, not Bailey, and that's how it has to be, firm and patient and always remembering he is just a puppy. Queensland...

@@htbuckley Sound great. We said goodbay to our beloved Ivan in 2016, known a the chocolate dog where we live, short before his 15th birthday. Before that we had 3 other dachshunds. Greatly missed, but no new ones because of our age and health issues.

They are not lapdogs,. They are hunting dogs. Scent hounds. They dig and love making huge holes your garden. Stubborn and noisy. Prone to back problems. Don't let him go up and down stairs. No jumping up for toys or treats or on to furniture. Just a few traits. Have owned and bred them over 50 years. But they are loyal. Loveable. Funny. Great characters etc xx

5.30 in the morning , cold and dark... guess who's on my lap, wrapped in my jacket and one arm as I write this, yep that tiny hunting dog biting my pullover. out in the garden we have Bandicoot's digging holes as well as Bailey. we have never had one of our Kelpies (Aussie working dog) on our lap or in the bedroom doing the things this tiny puppy does, so it's all new to us and we love it. we are to old for Kelpies now and this little sausage is just the thing for us. my mother had 2 dashounds and 3 Great Danes when I was a boy...so long ago ( we call them dashounds cos they dash around and they are a hound and we are Australians not Germans with Badgers, we have wallabies and kangaroos) so things are a little bit different. but we love your comments and concern. more adventures of Bailey to come next week

@@htbuckley I know of all the creatures you speak of. I like wombats. If you think you are too old for Kelpies then you will have your hands full with miniature smooth Dachshunds. They live a very long time, many 17 years or more. My cousin lives in Perth and is a well-known wildlife photographer and lecturer. I have never visited Australia it Bob says the colours of everything are amazing. Good luck with your Dachshund.

I’ve owned several in my lifetime. While the breed was developed as a hunter, they are also the most wonderful snuggle buddies; they love to cuddle. They are delightfully loyal and loving.

Those are the best breed and wouldn't have any other breed. I have two and they are so personable. Many people call them dashounds and not dachshunds, they are pronounced ( docsunds )

Thanks for taking the time to comment , you are lucky to have 2 of these great dogs. Bailey is so funny, he has me in stitches first thing in the morning, first light and when the Sun goes down, he loves to scoot around the kitchen floor with his toys. I know they are a German bread and the correct pronunciation... but, my Mother had 2 sausage dogs when I was little, so long ago, and we would call them Dash-Hounds because they would 'dash' around, chasing rabbits and getting stuck in rabbit holes; Dash-Hounds... they are a 'Hound'. So many people correct me, it's just a childhood thing that reminds me of my Mother, her hounds dashing around chasing 'Wabbits'. It is silly of me I know, I talk to Bailey in silly talk, he seems to like it. You'll just have to forgive an old man lapsing into fond memories of hounds dashing after Wabbits. Keep in touch, we would to love to know what things your dog's get up to . Queensland Australia.

Lovely puppy but please dont wash him too often - and don't use shampoo or soap. Our mini just gets rinsed when muddy, brushing is better.

Thanks 4 the advice, it was a special puppy shampoo, but we won't do it often, he was a bit on the nose. I can see a rinse in warm water is all he needs, he'll only get the very best from us. He get's his second jab next week, I'll ask the vet all sorts of questions and we look up stuff on the net. This is the first lap-dog we have ever had... all our other dogs have been working Kelpies, the last one passed about 10 years ago and it broke me heart, so this is the first dog since then. This little chap has brought so much joy into our lives. More vid's to come as Bailey grows up.

Dogs and cats don't get as scared in these baths if you put a towel down first so they don't keep slipping. Good traction makes it less scary for them.

Where do you live that s grown monitor is walking through your yard?? One of mine was “friends” with my iguana. They laid in the sun together everyday. But a monitor??? Another one was friends with two different pitties. He’d cause “trouble” because he knew he had backup.

We call them, 'Goannas' in Australia. That's a small one, we have about 5 of various sizes that plod around the garden, one big one about 4 to 5 foot long. They eat carrion and scraps we throw out... we shouldn't, but we do... they seem to keep the carpet-snakes away. I don't trust them around Bailey, but a carpet snake would definitely snap a puppy up and so would the wedge-tailed eagles. The birds (kookaburra's and honey eaters) always let us know if lizards, snakes and hawks/eagles are around. We live in Country SE Queensland. Occasionally, a Goanna will walk into the kitchen and we have to chase them out with a broom, they're great climbers, steeling birds eggs and chicks, same with the carpet snakes... that's why birds kick up a racket when they're around. Carpet snakes are a python, non poisonous. Are you from South America, Mexico? It's great to know where people live, so interesting. Thanks for taking the trouble to write. keep in touch, I put up a video every week. It's Winter down under and the snakes and lizards have gone into hibernation for the next 3 months.

'from little things big things grow'. one of our son-in-law's is German. your young at 85, I'm 80 this year, the Dackel keeps me young and happy, loving little puppy's is good for oldies, they won't allow you to get old!!! more adventures to come this weekend

ya get used to them... I think they keep the snakes away, haven't seen a snake all year and that's unusual . they are goanna's, I'v seen some big ones out west, 4 or 5 foot. bears and rattle snakes freak me, we have nothing like them! When I was little the 1 thing that terrified me was, moths!! now, I have a mine dashound to protect us, more adventures to come from down under...

But perhaps you can understand that having spent more than 50 years of my 75 lovingly owning and breeding the very best healthy Dachshunds it's a bit of a slap in the face when people decide they will change their name. The Australian Kennel club use the correct name and spelling as do reputable breed specialists. But you are entitled to call him what you wish. I think your expectations of ownership may change as he grows lol. But have lots of fun with him.

your quite right... but. we'er Aussies, we like to put our spin on words. tell ya wot; I'll stop saying Dashound, if the Americans stop saying 'erbs' instead of 'herbs', it drives me mad!!! but there ya go. I don't like Doxie, Bailey doesn't like being called a 'Doxie'. right now at 6 in the morning ,at my desk, he's inside my jacket like a Joey in a kangaroo's pouch with just his nose sticking out and I'm writing 1 handed... but I am smiling and loving that you took the trouble to write, thanks 4 that. more adventures of Bailey this weekend. we are learning all sorts of things; filming, editing, uploading and most of all little puppy dogs...
