Thanks so much for getting this on here. Made my day. I've been a fan of this band, and particularly this song, for a long time. It's a bit of a curve ball to what you've been reacting to lately so I'm glad you enjoyed it. You're both so down-to-earth and I enjoy your commentary at the pause and at the end of all songs. Can't wait to see what other BMC songs are coming your way.

As a musician from the 60's and 70's, I proclaim that Forever Changes is one of the greatest albums ever recorded, rivaling St Pepper. Love evolved in Hollywood along with the Doors, Buffalo Springfield, and the Seeds. I suggest that you listen to earlier albums with songs like 7 and 7 is, their first hit, My Little Red Book, Signed DC, with amazing harmonica, and Stephanie Knows Who. I loved your reactions to this masterpiece. Check out the live version from his tour in Europe late in his career. Thank you for sharing your reaction of Love. Please do more. I believe that you are the first and only to do so. Please spread Love to the world!! ❤❤❤

The one problem with listening to individual songs from albums that were made as one single piece of art is you're only hearing a little part of the story, and in this instance it's the final chapter after a truly phenomenal album. It has a whole different meaning when listening to the album as a whole. Yes, there's lots of orchestration throughout the album, but also a lot more heavy songs to go along with the ballads, and a few songs that have more of a bite to them with some fantastic guitar in there too. Hope you can listen to more.

The original line up played London? Wow. I was too young (7). I've read that the classic line up of Love never performed outside California. Shows how much nonsense there is out there. Forever Changes - greatest album ever, and Da Capo would be a contender too had its 2nd side been as good as its first.

Agree with earlier comments that the album in its entirety is a must for the two of you to experience. For all the lovely Baroque Pop flourishes, there is an undercurrent of anger and dread that weaves through like incense, from the opener “Alone Again, Or” to “The Red Telephone” with bursts of cranky ennui, like “The Daily Planet” and “Bummer In The Summer”. Even it’s unabashed love songs “Andmoreagain” and “Old Man” have a melancholy feel to them. Both songs, and the amazing acoustic guitar playing, are courtesy of the late Brian MacClean, the other principle singer/songwriter in Love. But this is main man Arthur Lee’s child and vision, and it’s one that once you experience it, it will haunt you forever
@tonybates7870
@tonybates7870 2 жыл бұрын
"Undercurrent of anger and dread". Absolutely. I've always thought that, from my first listen in 1980. No matter how sweet the melodies get, there's something sinister about Lee's work. Bacharach meets Charles Manson. I feel the same about Jim Morrison - everything he sings has a threatening quality, even Love Her Madly or Touch Me, pretty straight forward pop songs.

John...absolutely right! Bryan MacLean was solid and lets not forget John Echols either. Arthur was a genius, but he also had the habit of taking credit for the contributions of other band mates when it wasn't always warrented. Still, why tarnish such a beautiful album with criticisms....Forever Changes is perfect and beautiful in almost every sense!

I never think of Love as being part of 'the Summer of Love'. No hippie ever wrote or sang the words 'Sitting on a hillside, watching all the people die.' Or ' The snot has caked against my pants, it has turned into crystal.' I believed Arthur had a morbid fear of dying young. This was reflected throughout many of his songs.

What an amazing album! One of the greatest ever. Very expressive and hopeful and, beautifully written, performed and, arranged. The amazing lyrical themes are accounts of love lost, the incredible paranoia and very real fear of dying overseas, killing people just as young and full of life as these young men were at the time this was recorded. There is some incredible musicianship and sublime poetry as well. You will LOVE the entire album too

SO many great songs on this album - Alone Again Or, The Red Telephone, A House is Not a Motel, Andmoreagain, etc. There really isn't one weak track, however. And even better than almost every song is the single they made right after the album that's a bonus track on the cd: Your Mind and We Belong Together - truly phenomenal complex mystifying track.

Not many people know that this was not a traditional white hippy band. Arthur Lee ,the creator of all this magic was a black guy from Memphis. All the strings were just "in his head " he was such a great lyricist as well. one of the first true multi racial bands , along with sly and the family stone etc. I got into this when my boss ( in the late 80's) knew I liked good music and introduced to me to this along with some other 60's stuff

Love was there with the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Mamas and the Papas and the Laurel Canyon crowd in LA. They had trouble making it and touring because sadly America wasn't ready for an integrated band. They could not tour in much of the southern USA.
@KebabMusicLtd
@KebabMusicLtd 11 ай бұрын
They could have toured: Henxrix toured. Arthur Lee was certainly a musical genius but unfortunately he knew that to and his head disappeared up-his-ass in 1967. He wouldn't tour because he was always looking for a better deal (and they did get plenty). He says so himself in the video The LOVE story. Arthur even recommended that Paul Rothschild go and look at another group which he did; The Doors garnered the plaudits that Love could have won too.

During the 70's I would often make a list of my favorite singers, guitarists, and ten favorite albums. I dug out those lists some time ago and the only album that was in my top 10 on every list was "Forever Changes". As many have mentioned it's best to listen to it as a suite. The "Forever Changes" album is one of those gems from the lates 1960s (along with the Zombies "Odessey and Oracle") that have long influenced musicians. The general audience has forgotten about this music, but musicians continue to pass on the torch. The first three Love albums are all great - essential Psychedelic and Art Rock.

This album is true stereo-hi/fidelity of the late '60s. The original stereo was separated channels & some were distinctively separated. Quite a trip because with the right speakers & amp, the music would become ambient & you'd hear instruments where speakers were not placed. This became even more dynamic when Quad was released & later Beta Hi-Fi. Of course, these two systems were expensive & people didn't buy them so they disappeared. So did the albums that were required. One of the most impressive Quad-released albums was RCA's Elvis -- Aloha From Hawaii. On the right system, with a Quad (4 channels) cartridge, Elvis' voice came from between the speakers on the right & left side of you if you were seated in the center. It was quite surprising. Then later when the horns blared they came from behind you where no speakers were while the guitars were all in front of you & you could not determine if they were coming from the speakers. All rather ghostly. Another album with distinctive stereo was Poco's "Crazy Eyes," where the banjo comes in separately from all other instruments & the horns surround you. The stereo you hear today with all the technology we have doesn't come close to those stereo-high fi albums of the late 50s (David Carroll Orchestra an example on the Mercury label). The hi-fidelity gave the stereo music a warmth not on today's music & kept the acoustics high & the bass & drums low. The Quad & Beta-HiFi equipment was astonishing stuff. I heard them & can attest to it. Today's stereo is flat. Almost no distinctive separation except for maybe one instrument. I have friends who were recording engineers & they immediately knew what I meant when I mentioned it. Especially the Mercury late 1950s / early '60s albums that were like no others. Liberty Records came close on some of their 45's like "Walkin' With My Angel," by Bobby Vee (the drums & shoes walking were hi-fi). It was a mono record -- but the hi-fidelity gave it life. Remastered or remixed versions of many albums usually are terrible. Instruments drop out, and presence & ambiance are lost. The Beatles records -- trumpets, cornets & their little solos are gone. You can hear them playing but not like the original. I heard this on the remaster of "Help Me Rhonda" by The Beach Boys. The mono 45 is better than all because many instruments are also lost. Arthur Lee & Love's song "You Set The Scene" should not be touched by anyone. It's perfectly recorded (Elektra Records was known for capturing their artist's music quite well. Listen to The Doors' "Roadhouse Blues"). You both gave a great assessment & it was a pleasure to listen to both of you. Your Mom's had good taste in music.

Love used to play at our high school dances in pasadena california. All the first three original albums were recorded in stereo. The single off forever changes was Alone again or. The first stereo forty five commercially released. The album was their first flop in 1968 because it was so far ahead but it's time. But it's now considered one of the top ten rock records of all time. I have been unwavering major Love fan since 1966.

One of the many interesting things about this record is that Arthur Lee - the chief songwriter and bandleader - was certain that he was going to die soon so he wanted to put everything he and the band had in the recording of this record. If you listen to outtakes from the album, you can hear Arthur's control of the sessions. He definitely had a vision for this record and he pushed it hard, which resulted in the classic line-up of the band splintering after this record. And while Arthur's/Love's records previously and moving forward were good, nothing comes close to matching Forever Changes. A damn near perfect record.

suprised u havn't heard of this it is considered one of the best albums of all time (by record critics mostly) though it never succeded commrecialy its also a band thats influenced more bands than any one else esp the indie bands primal screams 1st lp was based on this and yes they are considered genuine genius's and all the problems that go with that i.e drug addiction they started off on weed and LSD but ended up strung out on heroin so they never left the old hollywood castle movie set they squatted in hence no commercial success they initiated the whole flowe power movement along with the byrds Arthur lee was the 1st ghetto dandy before hendrix - flowery pants and womens blouses but they were true ying and yang they were nasty hippies arrogant cocky and self destructive which somehow makes there sweet music more effective read there history it gives you a bigger appreciation of there music, Arthur lee was a trained multi instrumentalist and a producer and the scrawney genius floored an american football player in 2 punches these guys were everything and more Lee's surreal lyrics speak to me like no one else the most underated overlooked band of all time you were spot on about the Beatles and the Moody blues just add a bit of punk n u got it (check 7 and 7 is off Da Capo there 2nd lp. just the reaction i acspect from Love

Really glad you chose this. A little history, without Love there probably would have been no Door's. They were trying to get out of their contract with Elektra record's so they turned the the studio on to the Door's and after that all the production and advertising money went in to promoting the Door's. It is a stereo recording, I have it on vinyl. It sounds so good because I think Elektra had one of the best studios then and the production team is the same as the Door's.

It has a Flower Power vibe but the flower is wilting and dieing. Love are an amzing band with lots of styles. For a Love proto punk blast listen to the 2 minute song "7 and 7 Is" recorded in 66. It's amazing and utterly brutal for it's time. Also Love was the first multi racial pop/rock group with main man, Arthur Lee and lead guitarist Johnny Echols being of african american descent. Alot of Arthur's lyrics came from the perspective of an outsider looking into white 60's hippy youth culture rather than being in the centre of it.

Great comments from everyone here. In one sense, as you alluded to in your reaction, "Forever Changes" is a period piece. In another it is timeless because it captures an important moment that lives on in the minds of many people. The first song on side one, "Alone Again Or", was Brian McLean's love song to the world in a time of innocence and vulnerability. The group Calexico performs a wonderful cover of it. The reaction they receive when playing it live reinforces the notion that the song is timeless. . The first song on side two of the album, "Between Clark and Hilldale", is IMHO Arthur Lee's best work as a songwriter. With those lyrics, he captured the spirit of the mid-60s Sunset Strip (Between Clark and Hilldale Streets) like no other song. . . That section of The Strip was packed with several live music venues. The Doors, The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Mothers Of Invention, and other bands of the day played often, but LOVE was the top draw. The contagious bossa nova-like beat with the flamenco guitar-like feel was also a stroke of genius.

Oh yeah, Arthur Lee and Love! One of the ALL-TIME great LA bands from a purely influential standpoint. Influenced Jim Morrison and the Doors, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Jimi Hendrix, possibly even Jeff Lynne and his Electric Light Orchestra, list just goes on and on...damn shame Arthur and his band at the time didn't properly blow up the way many of their well-renowned contemporaries did during the psychedelic era (mainly because they were a racially integrated band that missed out on many crucial tour dates for various reasons, '67 Monterey Pop Festival of course being the biggest one). This song here is one of the shining gems in the entire Love catalog, but there were actually members of the Wrecking Crew (most distinguished studio session band on the West Coast at the time) featured on it due to the music being more demanding than Arthur's bandmates could handle. Whole 'Forever Changes' album might very well be the best the 60s decade ever produced as it really encapsulated the thoughts, hopes, fears, and dreams of a generation that was finally coming of age back then. Shame what happened to Lee though (RIP), he was a true songwriting genius when it came to the lyrics and had a presence about him that just couldn't be duplicated. GREAT reaction you two:::wink:::wink:::! ;-)

@@f.w.2054 Nope. They *passed* on Adler, who was pissed about it, and that's why Adler stole their original name at the time, the Grass Roots, and Adler used it for the Sloan-Barri construct at Dunhill, and quickly released a Dylan song under their name. They had then to find a new name, and LOVE was it.

Good pick. Hope you later got to hear the Lp from the beginning. The "font" was their logo. They were the first band with a logo, and they totally owned the L.A.music scene in the mid-'60s, culminating in that summer of LOVE and the DOORS (and for me, Judy Collins as well) in '67. The Beatles Stg Pepper, too, of course, but that Elektra label was spinning round & round on everyone's turntable in town. They also had a surprising dedicated following in Britain and Europe, too.

Until 1966 most albums were released in mono and stereo. By '67 mono was being phased out so it's difficult to find mono records from 1967. 1967 was also the year I graduated from high school and started college.

Possibly my favourite track of all time. Personally I prefer to hear it without earphones. You need to hear the instrumentation as they inter-twine one another. The first time I heard this track and a day or two later I had this tune going around my head and I just didn't know what it was... The build to the fanfare at the end not only polishes off this track but bring to a stunning climax what is one of the greatest collection of songs ever collected onto two sides of vinyl. Forever Changes is the album which Da Capo should have been. In the UK, Love were very popular in the sixties, especially among many well-known bands of the time and had a great influence on British Rock culture and development.

Between 1965 and 1969 Love released five studio albums, of which the 1967 Forever Changes is arguably the best. It is one of the best albums of all time. For example, Rolling Stone magazine chose the album at number 40 of the 500 best albums of all time. Pink Floyd and Genesis call LOVE one of their musical influences.

It was recorded in stereo but they were only up to about 8 tracks in the studios at the time - not much overdubbing or punch in's available at the time (1967) 16 track recording began December of 1967 3 months after Forever Changes finished recording. The Beatles "I want to hold your hand was recorded on 4-track machines that had just started in late 1963. Everything before that was just 2 tracks - left and right.

Arthur Lee was Love's frontman/singer, and he was similar to Jim Morrison of The Doors in that he was primarily a poet and didn't have any musical training. He and Morrison were both dependent on the other band members to flesh out their ideas. By the time of their third album, Forever Changes, Lee had learned to play acoustic guitar, but Jazz-trained guitarist Johnny Echols, and songwriter/guitarist Bryan MacLean, are heard playing acoustic and electric guitar on much of the album. Various members of the the "Wrecking Crew" also play on certain tracks.

Nick & Lex: its a great feeling seeing two young people discovering LOVE for the first time!! It seems like yesterday that I heard Forever Changes for the first time and its been one of my go to records since then. Remember, its a complex album lyrically and production wise, so it gets better on every listening! You guys must have heard Little Red Book or Alone Again Or before? Only complaint: interrupting such a beautiful song! I was getting into it and you stopped it!!! Lex, not trying to be creepy, but you have a really nice smile! You guys are great and you picked one of the most gorgeous albums ever. Thanks!

I love this album. 60s black led psychedelic band from my hometown of LA. Arthur Lee was brilliant. Thanks for reacting to it. While I appreciate people suggesting lesser known songs, the amazing song and huge hit off that album was Alone Again Or. There's a reason it was such a hit, it's a brilliant song. Please consider reacting to it.

I was an intense Love fan at age 15 when their first album came out. I knew one of the original members. I have to tell you about this song... you have to listen to the entire album. This album holds together in one piece, as a "concept album" probably better than either Sgt. Pepper or Tommy. Not to denigrate WHATSOEVER the Beatles or The Who, of course. I had this 3rd album as soon as it reached Pennsylvania. I knew then it was a great masterpiece. Likely the first recorded rap song is on this album. It is jazz-rock-folk fusion long before that was being done. Not to mention mariachi. And the lyrics... such a commentary on life and on the times. To dig deeper, listen to side one of the 2nd LP, "Da Capo". And check out the concerts Arthur Lee did in the millennium as he was dying of cancer... they'd do the entire "Forever Changes" album on stage.
