Hi guys - Porcupine Tree ! - Brilliant ! - After just hearing a few tracks they did, I ended up with their entire cd collection within a few weeks. That's a very rare thing for me to do, but boy oh boy so glad I did. The album Deadwing is an incredible album..."Arriving somewhere..." is a track that just blew me away. If not yet heard - It's a must ! Thanks for such a great song reaction.

Same with me. A few years back, at almost age 60, I heard Blackest Eyes which was recommended by youtube. I have been a long term prog fan all of my life (grew up listening to Genesis, Yes, King Crimson, ELP, etc. - saw them all live several times). After hearing Blackest Eyes I sought out the rest of the album on youtube and then immediately ordered the CD, as well as CD's of Deadwing and Fear of a Blank Planet and the Arriving Somewhere But Not Here DVD. Needless to say, I ended up picking up everything by PT and SW eventually. Really hoping that they get back together with the line-up that includes Gavin Harrison. The "Anesthetize" DVD live from Tilburg, where they do the entire Fear album is an absolute must.

On the CD the scratching goes on for 5-6 minutes at the end of the song and then there's a "secret" version of Shesmovedon that's not listed. It's different than the version on Lightbulb Sun and well worth listening to. This whole album is great, but they all are. Solo Steven Wilson is also a must, particularly Hand.Cannot.Erase. That album really must be heard as a whole.

Deadwing is my favorite P.T. album (it was originally meant to be the soundtrack of a ghost story that Steven Wilson had co-written, but the film was never done). I think this album is a perfect blend of Steven's metal influence and their Floydish atmospheric stylings. Not a bad track on the whole lp, but highlights for me are Shallow, Lazarus, Arriving Somewhere But Not Here, Mellotron Scratch, and Open Car. You really HAVE to do a reaction to both Lazarus and Arriving Somewhere.... - two of their most popular songs!!

Thank you, Nick and Lex. Most reaction channels that react to Porcupine Tree tend to start with Arriving Somewhere and Anesthetize, and often ignore the remaining PT catalog. But there's so much more to Porcupine Tree than just those two admittedly awesome tracks. And my aim has been to slowly introduce you to more of the PT catalog before eventually suggesting those two oft-requested tracks. Thank you for being open to the journey :)

Great choice. The songs that drew in the progressive metal crowd get the most attention, and they're great, but they're not the best that PT has to offer. It's great to see the lesser known, more melodic tracks get some of the attention they deserve.

Awesome video as always, big thanks to you guys! I’m ready for another PT full album reaction whenever you guys are, “In Absentia” is a great choice, although you really can’t go wrong with anything from “Up the Downstair” onward. My favourites are the ones from “Signify” to “Fear of a Blank Planet”. All basically 10/10 masterpieces for me! Steven’s solo stuff is fantastic too, although I wasn’t huge into “To the Bone” and I haven’t heard the latest one yet.

Good AM Erik Berg. I LOVE your taste! "Up The Downstair" is easily my favourite Tree album. The title track has the wickedest bass! And the sublime and ethereal vox by Richard Barbieri's wife are soul-melting. (I have had the thought many times that the only thing which could have/would have made Porcupine Tree even more perfect was a female element - including female leading vocals for some songs. How frustrating it is that hardly any1 ever mentions "Up The Downstair". I am glad you did. Thank you; you made my day!
@erikberg5363

@@cosmicchris3063 Actually I really need to go back and listen to “Up the Downstair” again soon, it’s been awhile! PT was my absolute favourite band 7 or 8 years ago and I kind of listened to them too much, however they were one of the first Progressive Rock/Metal bands I really got into and it lead me to 70s prog and more prog-metal as well! I still love them though; SW just has such an uncanny ability to place exactly the right sound in exactly the right spot for maximum emotional impact (in my opinion anyway). Very interesting point you bring up about the female vocals, I’ve never really thought about that before but now that you mention it I have to agree. I have really enjoyed the appearances from female vocalists on some of Steven’s solo stuff, such as Clodagh Simonds’ feature on “Significant Other” and Ninet Tayeb on the “Hand. Cannot. Erase.” album.

I can't blame you either - if I was doing a reaction channel and discovered Porcupine tree, I would be doing full albums as soon as possible so that I could start listening to them on my own over and over asap! Just a small word of caution. I would have agreed with the statement, I have never heard a Steven Wilson song I didn't love" up until 4 years ago. But his last 2 efforts, To the Bone, and the Future Bites are sadly not nearly as good as what he did for many many years pryor. Please explore EVERYTHING else before you hit those two. Such a hauntingly beautiful simply complex song. Porcupine Tree was my introduction to Steven Wilson's artistry. The website Rushisaband mentioned that Alex Lifeson contributed a solo to Porcupine Trees song Anesthetize and I once I listened to that plus the whole Fear of a Blank Planet album, I was hooked. Speaking of Alex Lifeson solo contributions John Wesley a guitarist/singer who was part of the Porcupine Tree touring band has several solo albums which I also really enjoy. He has an album called Disconnect. The song Once was a Warrior features an awesome solo by Alex Lifeson that I hope you check out

Deadwing is such a good album - I would strongly recommend listening to it in its entirety from start to finish - with the lights down and the volume up! Steven at his absolute best IMHO. "Arriving Somewhete But Not Here" is on its own dimensional plane yes, but its plane is a lower and inferior plane. At least 200 other Tree songs surpass it, by parsecs, and on solely the "Deadwing" album, it is nothing compared to "Lazarus", "Mellotron Scratch", "Open Car", "The Start Of Something Beautiful", and the title track!

Hi from Oklahoma, NicknLex! I discovered your channel a few days ago, and subscribed just a few minutes ago. You are easily my favourite reactors, and you have excellent taste! I heartily recommend that you have a separate channel for exclusively the wondrous world (universe) of Steven Wilson and his musical projects: Porcupine Tree, Blackfield, No-Man, Steven Wilson, IEM (Incredible Expanding Mindfuck), Bass Communion, Storm Corrosion (a collab with Mikael Afferfeldt of Opeth), etc., and a channel for all non-SW! (-: Seriously! As a Porcupine Tree expert (and devout listener since '99), I exhort you to not get too excited about listening to and reviewing "Arriving Somewhere But Not Here". "Arriving Somewhere But Not Here" is severely overrecommended. Within the Porcupine Tree spectrum, it is in the extreme middle. The song is very mediocre and average (although good, of course, because it is the mighty Tree!), and unspecial. All of you who ludicrously tout "Arriving Somewhere..." as the best song by Porcupine Tree obviously have not listened to enough Tree! "Arriving Somewhere..." is not even the best song on "Deadwing"! Thereby, it cannot possibly/logically be the best song in PT's discography. Those of you who rank it at the pinnacle of PT songs don't EVEN know what you'te talking about. You don't have a clue, and you need to explore PT's discography more deeply. The best song on "Deadwing" is "Lazarus". The second best is "Mellotron Scratch". The third is "Open Car" (a unique masterpiece with superb terse lyrics). If you choose "Arriving Somewhere..." above the magical, poignant,and ineffably gorgeous and dreamy "Lazarus", you indeed need counseling, and a brain scan. These Tree songs absolutely and thoroughly DESTROY "Arriving Somewhere But Not Here": "This Long Silence" "Begonia Seduction Scene" "The Nostalgia Factory" "Voyage 34: Phase I" "Voyage 34: Phase II" "Voyage 34: Phase III" "Voyage 34: Phase IV" "Up The Downstair" "Fadeaway" "Small Fish" "Burning Sky" "Always Never" "Not Beautiful Anymore" "Bornlivedie" "Signify" "Idiot Prayer" ""Dark Matter" "Sleep Of No Dreaming" "The Sky Moves Sideways Phase One" "The Sky Moves Sideways Phase Two" "Moonloop" "Stars Die" "The Moon Touches Your Shoulder" "Prepare Yourself" "Moonloop: Unedited Improvisation" "Intermediate Jesus" "Disappear" (all three versions) "Untitled" "Flicker" "Cure For Optimism" "And The Swallows Dance Above The Sun" "Buying New Soul" "Moonloop: Coda" "Tinto Brass" "Stranger By The Minute" "A Smart Kid" "Even Less" "Lightbulb Sun" "Socalled Friend" "Last Chance To Evacuate Planet Earth (Before It Is Recycled)" "The Rest Will Flow" ""Shesmovedon" "London" "Even Less Part Two" "Black Dahlia" "in Formaldehyde" "How Is Your Life Today" "Time Flies" (the shorter and the longer versions) "Insignificance" "Remember Me Lover" "Metanoia: Intermediate Jesus" "Lazarus" "Trains" "Open Car" "Prodigal" "CollapseThe Light Into Earth" "Drown With Me" (all versions) "Fear Of A Blank Planet" "Russia On Ice" "Mother And Child Divided" "Anesthetize" "Way Out Of Here" "Normal" "Mellotron Scratch" "Cheating The Polygraph" "What Happens Now" "Octane Twisted" "I Drive The Hearse". Now you know how far down in the rankings "Arriving Somewhere..." actually is - and the list I just typed is a short one! "Arriving Somewhere But Not Here" contains simplistic jamming, and lacks the atmosphere which is the spirit of Porcupine Tree (and its primary, characteristic element). All of you who ridiculously push "Arriving Somewhere..." as the finest song of the immense Porcupine Tree catalogue, stop being ridiculous - and stop leading NicknLex astray! "Arriving Somewhere But Not Here" is nothing compared to most of the mighty Tree's work! "Russia On Ice", "Trains", all of the album "The Sky Moves Sideways", "Disappear", "Idiot Prayer", "Stranger By The Minute", "Lazarus", "Lightbulb Sun", and "Up The Downstair" are some of the songs in the loftiest level of the Tree's work. They all surpass the comparatively lame and boring "Arriving Somewhere...", by parsecs. The frequent comments on KZfaq and elsewhere which praise "Arriving Somewhere..." as P. Tree's best, I theorise, are a manifestation of what I call the Copycat Syndrome. In this process, one guy (probably a teenager), posts that "Arriving Somewhere" is awesome and thinks it's hip to listen to Porcupine Tree, then a friend or follower of his repeats the adulatory remark, and paraphrases it, while neither of them listens to any more, or very little of, Porcupine Tree's other songs. And so on and so on, and the meme continues and proliferates. The initiators of the meme probably are typical of the many relatively casual - and unknowledgeale - listeners who rank only the Tree's later albums at the top, without ever citing the early work - say, up to "In Absentia". They do not realise that early Porcupine Tree is the best Porcupine Tree! NicknLex, thank you for your time! You are so fun and exhilarating to watch and listen to, and I love it when other humans enjoy and appreciate the music of Steven Wilson, which is the music I live for. My favourite P. Tree songs include "Moonloop: Unedited Improvisation", two of the three versions of the incredible masterpiece "Disappear" (particularly the demo version), "Bornlivedie", "Trains", "A Smart Kid" (an eerie, atmospheric post-apocalyptic anthem which is starkly beautiful and will give you chills and goosebumps), "Up The Downstair", "Idiot Prayer" (a supremly psychedelic, very atmospheric trancey-dancey opus, which features the grooviest electric guitar wizardry in the history of music!), "The Moon Touches Your Shoulder" (very Buddhist and mystical), "Prodigal" (includes brilliant lyrics which I know you would love, Alexia), "The Sky Moves Sideways Phase One" and "The Sky Moves Sideways Phase Two" (both of which are very Floydian, but much better than anything Pink Floyd has ever created), "Lightbulb Sun", "Open Car", "Anesthesize" (the original verzh is stupendous but I and many other PT aficionados love the famous live version in Tilburg, Netherlands - included on the "Anesthetize" DVD - even more - and that live performance has the tightest and most perfect guitar-drums interplay ever, in my opinion), the lovely and mystical "Stars Die" (Steven Wilson's mother's favourite Porcupine Tree song), and "The Seance". I heartily recommend all the songs in the long list and the preceding paragraph as reaction tunes, but I am sure you are overwhelmed with requests already. If I proffer just one request - for now, it is the utterly tremendous "Coma Divine", which many progressive rock critics rate as the best live album ever recorded. It is blistering! An album review of it, a la your wonderful and very entertaining album review of "Lightbulb Sun", would be just fantastic! Nick, I very much loved your reaction to "Russia On Ice". It is indeed a monster. (-: I am exicted about enjoying and experiencing more of your stellar reactions! --Tunefully, Cosmic Chris

Awesome reaction to an awesome song. You mentioned “Arriving Somewhere”, but I hope you do the LIVE version from the Chicago concert. The studio version just pales in comparison!

Live is excellent - but the studio version for me is the best version because the last few minutes is just fantastic and isn't on the live version. Live the ending is different...But like you it's just an individual preference. Nothing more.

@@jimled50jl49 It’s PRECISELY those last few minutes of the live version that to me is the icing on the cake. It soars over the audience, including quick views of the background videos. We’ll agree to disagree.....

I stronly advise you to listen to Porcupine Tree - Voyage 34. Preferrably the whole album, but at least Phase I and Phase II. That really goes beyond what you have just listened to in Glass Arm Shattering (which indeed is beautiful!).

No, no, no, no, no Paul! "King Ghost" and "In Floral Green" are beauties from SW's latest work! So are his reworking of older SW and Porcupine Tree.

Anurag Iyer, Andy Bleach, and others who rave about "Arriving Somewhere But Not Here": You obviously do not know much about Porcupine Tree. "Arriving Somewhere But Not Here" is not "a gem", as Anurag stated. It is barely mediocre! Scroll down and read my comment from a few days ago, under "Cosmic Chris". When I typed the long list of Tree tunes which are enormously better, I forgot a few. "Mute" and "Footprints", and several other Tree masterpieces came to mind after I posted the comment. "Arriving Somewhere..." is not even the best song on its album "Deadwing"! "The Start Of Something Beautiful" is yet another which I did not think of at the time. With its scintillating beautiful bass and gorgeous acoustic guitar, it bests "Arriving Somewhere...". And how can anyone possibly favor the lame "Arriving Somewhere But Not Here" over "Lazarus"?! That is a crime against humanity, and a departure from sanity. It is akin to ranking "In A Gadda Da Vida" over "Let It Be". In either scenario, you're away and astray. (I am refraining from restating this less nicely, and more uncivilly). You Arriving Somewhere recommenders are obviously very casual listeners and very unfamiliar with the amazing Porcupine Tree. I am glad you like the band, but songwise, you have a helluva lot to learn! Reading my comment from last weekend amd listening to the songs on the lengthy list will be an excellent path to begin your journey, my initiates.
