You've been asking for it for a year now and it's finally here: our first real taste of Texas whiskey! We tracked down a bottle of Still Austin's The Musician Straight Bourbon Whiskey. But it's only aged for 2 years. Can it possibly live up to the hype we've been hearing about this brand?
Still Austin uses a mash bill of 70% white corn, 25% rye, and 5% malted barley to produce The Musician, a two-year aged bourbon that utilizes 100% Texas-grown grains.

Just picked it up - was on sale!! Got a bottle for $21 smackers …. Tremendous. Enjoying my first glen … very good. Will be an everyday supper.

You two are racking up some miles. I have never even looked for any Texas whiskey here in Ohio or anywhere. So many Bourbons to try. I hope you both continue to have a fun and safe trip. Say Meow to Norman.

I know this was a year ago. but glad you tried Still Austin. They are producing a lot of good stuff recently. I am loving the BIB series. cheers

Great review I enjoyed the video Since Im a Excutive Chef I brought a bottle I added some fuji Apples, Granny Smith Apples and Fresh Cinnamon and Fresh Vanilla I let that rest over night then I strained the Still Austin I reserved the Apple I added some raisins and cranberry I added some Organic Farm Fresh Apple Juice and made a Still Austin Apple 🍎 Crannerry Raisin Cinnamon Vanilla glaze for my grilled pork chops. This glazed pair well with Ice Cream. Take Some butter just a little. Cut slice of pound cake and warm up in the melted butter in a frying pan remove pound cake, add scoop of Vanilla Ice Cream and top it off with the glaze .

You're right. It's tasty. My daughter lives in Garland Texas Close to Dallas. She and her husband sent me that bottle. I opened min and tried it with you. I can't pick out things but, it is surely Tasty and Two years is hard to believe.

The Texas heat ages whiskey faster so 2yrs for Texas whiskey isn’t as bad as it might sound. If you double that it might be undrinkable.

Wasn't sure if that was a campground or a detainment facility with the background...lol. Your correct free is always good when your traveling. Enjoyed the review on this bottle.

Still Austin has the talents of Nancy "The Nose" Fraley. I had the cask strength version - $60+tax+shipping. I found it to be OK. It first tastes complex and like it has some depth, then disappears. At that price, I would pick a lot over it. More time might do it good, but the TX weather can overwork the barrels.

Due to the weather in texas they can rest them for shorter years and taste like older batches like Kentucky distilleries . New sub and here to stay ! If y’all ever in houston let me know and I can can take y’all to yellow rose distilling

I was wondering what you guys would think. I’m a bit surprised you didn’t mention pine on the nose. I get pineapple on the palate. It”s quite an enjoyable whiskey that is a little different. Nancy Frayley (spelling?) has been involved in the crafting of this whiskey. Great review - again.

The Cask Strength is a big step up from the regular Musician IMHO. I hope y'all get a chance to try and review it.

Still Austin the Musician is awesome. 100% non-pretentious Texas Whiskey. Very young but incredibly satisfying, and it is very affordable. Small distillery but laser focus when it comes to this release. The first release of Cask strength was sold out in days, even I missed out on that one. Cheers from Texas!!! Balcones on the other hand has too many offerings but I am a fan of the few I have tasted. True Blue 100 Texas Whiskey is so good, Pure blue corn buttery goodness.

Just had my 1st Texas Whiskey on Halloween- Ironroot Harbinger-115 proof - opened my eyes to Texas Whiskey- excellent pour! Aged 34 months - will try others soon!

While watching I had a pour of the only Texas whiskey on our shelf, a bottle of TX straight bourbon from the Firestone & Robertson Distillery out of Fort Worth. It’s a little grassy, but pleasant enough and worth a try. I love that your bottle is called The Musician. Their website reads, “Music has the ability to bring us all closer together - to make us feel more free and alive. So does great whiskey.” That’s enough to make me want to buy a bottle.

The cask strength Still Austin is on our radar but sounds like we need to put this one on our list as well. Great review. Gotta love a surprise bottle!

Someone shared a sample of the cask strength whiskey with us a while back. We liked it, but it didn't strike us immediately as being something we needed to race out and buy a bottle of. This bottle totally surprised us though! It makes us think that we must have missed something in our 2oz sample bottle tasting of the cask strength version.

We can understand the hesitance. This bottle is way better than many older bourbons in our opinion.

I got a barrel proof for $65 and it was good , but not so great. Nice pallet, long finish, but too young. So I put American oak toasted spiral in to the bottle for aging ;-)

You can't compare aging of Texas bourbons against those from Kentucky and the area as the temperature variances are MUCH more noticeable in Texas and has a direct aging (faster) impact on the barrels. I've had some Texas bourbon that was 4 years old and for me it was really over oaked. Another decent one that is decent is the cask strength TAH.

Need to grab a bottle (as well as the Iron Root and Milam & Greene...as a fan of Heather Greene's book, if nothing else) next time I am in Texas. I have been pretty disappointed with Texas bottles (Balcones and Garrison Brothers), and as an Okie, I'd love to support regionally.

@@TheBourbonVan Forgot about this comment, but Still Austin just came up and I was revisiting. 4 months later, I have both expressions, and I really enjoy them, maybe equally...I know some whiskey tubers have been gravitating to the cask strength. The cool thing about the base Musician bottle is that is uses the slow water reduction/slow proofing inspired by their consultant Nancy Fraley, so it is like enjoying extra science. Iron Root (which is still impossible to find!!!) uses it as well to counter that Texas heat (Old Elk also does it). I also dug the Milam & Greene Triple Cask, but that one is only 1/3rd Texan. If you are in Austin on your future travels, Still Austin has a fantastic tasting room that fits right in to a beer town. I am looking forward to a revisit in 3 weeks.

I’ve heard good things elsewhere as well, and have been tempted (as it’s actually available up here). But, at the $70 USD price point here…I don’t think so. Love the setting; is that the border “wall”?!? 😜

No this is not a $70 whiskey, so we do not blame you for avoiding it at that price. The campground was just a freebie spot on the old Route 66 route. We recorded a 5 Sip Friday there in front of an old service station that will drop next week Friday. It's considerably more photogenic than this one, haha.
