The greatest duo of all time. This song was the most played song of the 20th Century on radio and tv. I remember when it came out. I was a teen and here I am almost 60 year later still loving it. Sadly with lost Bobby Hatfield in 2003. This was played in the original Top Gun. And if you listen to Bobby’s all time great song Unchained Melody it was revised in the movie Ghost. Also try their #1 hit Soul and Inspiration. It’s nice to see young people appreciate great music. Thx

The Righteous Brothers, Bill Medley (baritone) and Bobby Hatfield (tenor) had the greatest music. I was a teenager when they were big. Bobby Hatfield passed away in 2003 a few weeks after The Righteous Brothers were inducted into the Rock 'N' Roll Hall of Fame. Check out their "Soul and Inspiration" and Bobby Hatfield "Unchained Melody" and "Ebb Tide". No auto tunes. Live performances. The group in the background were known as Phil Spector's Wall of Sound. Among those young people was Cher....yes, THAT Cher.

Sorry if I'm nitpicking, but the background singers seen here are Shindig regulars. The only one who isn't a Shindig regular is Cher. She and Sonny just happened to be on that episode (haven't checked that out myself so maybe not). You are correct about what we are hearing though. Someone has replaced the live audio with the studio recording. (The real live performance is available on KZfaq. Guess reviewers don't like the screaming girls.😁) The Wall of Sound was only a recording studio thing. It had to do with how instruments were used (the musicians were the Wrecking Crew). How he used his basement with a natural echo, which is why no one could duplicate his sound...you needed that basement. And then, of course, the singers, lead and backup.

I saw them live two or three times, the first was at my Senior Prom in 1965 at the famous nightclub Basin Street East in NYC. Their voices perfectly compliment each other. Some voice coaches feel that Bobby Hatfield was more of a counter-tenor. In any event, they were among the best ever.

Yes it does sound like that, but you've got it backwards...Summer Lovin' Sounds like this song because this song came first. "Captain Obvious over and out." the girls used to scream for the Righteous Brothers back in the day...

To get a real sense of their talent, you should hear Bobby Hatfield singing solo on the Andy Williams show (live vocal performance to a recorded instrumental track) performing "Unchained Melody" and Bill Medley taking lead on their recording of "I Just Want to Make Love to You". By the way, "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" was released in 1964 and "Summer Love" was released in 1978.

I'm always amused by young people showing amazement over the fact that people could actually sing back in 1964. Guess what? They could sing long before that. Check out some Frank Sinatra or Ella Fitzgerald from the '50s and even the '40s. You might even discover some pretty amazing music as early as the '30s. Unfortunately, the technical quality of the recordings made before that were not so great, but there's no reason to believe that people weren't singing just as well even before. The invention of sound recording is a dividing line, as we can't listen to anyone who sang (or played music) before that. You had to be there to hear it.

Summer Nights is a great song, but it is nothing alongside the Righteous Brothers, two of the greatest singers of the 20th century. Their name reveals part of their greatness. Going back, before it was cool, they loved black music, and performed in black venues to black audiences. It was their black audiences who called them The Righteous Brothers, and they adopted the name. A lot of people listening to them for the first time are surprised that they are white because that background in black clubs comes through in their sound.
@Aurora-tp3dy
@Aurora-tp3dy Жыл бұрын
Don't know what black clubs you think existed in1962 Orange County, CA. Bill Medley called it the whitest place in the country. However, after hearing that some white guys were singing R&B, black Marines from the El Toro Marine base went to check them out. They frequented that club during the months the Paramours performed there. It was the Marines who dubbed them righteous brothers. Bobby suggested they use the name the marines were calling them when they recorded their first record as a duo, Little Latin Lupe Lu.
