3 months later the headlines read: SKELETAL REMAINS OF FOUR MISSING HIKERS FOUND. What, nobody had a compass or a topo map? Did you have enough water for an excursion like this? Did you know what you were doing? Do you have protection from the elements or any kind of emergency food? Any emergency gear, flashlights, whistles, signal mirrors, basic first aid? All of these things will easily fit into a small day pack. This is a great tutorial of how NOT to do something like this if you are unfamiliar with the area or don't know what you're doing!! A place like this is not a little hike through a little city Park, this is a place where if you make a mistake, get lost, you could die. They didn't have ANYTHING they should have, but they had cameras!

Hi Nancy, Thank you for taking the time to reply to my comments on the video, I’m glad you enjoyed experience and that you appreciated the beauty of that part of the desert. Just to answer your speculation, I have been lucky enough to do this hike; I got the last permit of the day at the Paria Contact Station one day in March - 2006 (I was a solo applicant) and enjoyed a splendid day * More to come.

Before today I had never heard of this place. I got to your post because there was a story online how people get lost and die here in the summer. At 62, I know I'll never see The Wave in person. Thank you for the video, and I'm glad you all made it safely.

Great instructional video in what NOT to do. Cannot believe you ended up acing out other prepared and dedicated hikers in the lottery who DO take this seriously. Fortunately, you survived.

They didn't have permission or play the lottery so didn't take anyone's hike from them. Listen to the start carefully and you'll hear one of them being concerned that a group ahead of them might be rangers and one of the guys says there are too many men for that

No, at the 0.27 mark you can clearly see the pink permit dangling from his pack. The went through the process although apparently oblivious to the message. And without the graphics they would have been even more lost than they were...

I personally think that a very tall flagpole at the sign-in box at the top of the rise where you climb out of the wash that goes to Wire Pass would go some of the way to solving that problem. It would give returning hikers a point of reference and would not clutter up the desert with lots of signs. I’m glad you (and your finger nails) survived  Drew

About the map hikers are given with the permit; it is (or was when I did the hike) just a sheet with landmarks by which to navigate and a roughly sketched trail, as most people who do this hike may not be very familiar with GPS navigation. I found it very helpful as a matter of fact. It tells you to look out for the prominent dark vertical crack in the cliffs which is a good point to head for if you are in doubt, as it is directly beyond the main aria of interest.

You can't come to arizona from any other state besides maybe nevada and expect to be fine hiking or being out in the sun for a long time! Its hot and DRY here! The Sun sucks the water out of you along with all your energy in a sunny day. bring a compass map and 1 1/2 gal water per person for a medium long hike especially in the summer months(which is pretty much April till mid october in AZ!) And bring a fire tool and something to contain a small fire in! warmth at night is nice! The Wave is Beautifull!

With this information, we didn't feel the need to do research prior to flying out; however, the night before we just did a quick search and realized that we were in for a big surprise. So we prepared as much as we could considering that we were at antelope canyon the night before and had a few hours to make adjustments.

As for the map that they provide with the permit, if you've watched City Slickers, then you know that a map with "land marks" aren't always the easiest to navigate especially when everything looks the same. We did have phones with us which we THOUGHT we could use for GPS though they cut out a mile in.

Great place for a first hike! Although you really have to watch your landmarks on the return to find the parking lot again... or at least that's what I experienced : )

2) We walk through the dessert mainly in sand (which is what typically takes people so long) - Thus us thinking that we can SEE the wave from 2.75 miles away if we're just trekking through sand. 3) With the above information, we thought we would be in and out in 3 hours (1 hour max to get there, 1 hour to take pictures, and an hour back).

This was a great KZfaq video, I learned something from it, and I had fun watching you guys learn too. Spectacular scenery, great photography, and fun between really nice people. I will be in Nevada next week with eight other nurses, and we have a few days to spare at the end of some training and we're looking for places to hike, this would be superb, but I don't know about my chances of getting a permit. Best of luck, take care. Roger

With everything said, I feel accomplished considering that majority of people WHO ARE PREPARED don't even make it to the Wave, and especially now due to the fact that people are not making it even back alive :( So with that said, again, I appreciate your comment, but don't appreciate your assumptions and lack of appreciate knowing that we did make it there and back considering our lack of preparation.

Wow. Like others, I found the bitching, pissing & moaning too unbearable. I hate to stereotype, but these "kids" are all over southern California (from their attitudes & accents I'd be willing to place bets they're from southern California). Parents came from another country...worked hard, SPOILED their kids, gave them ANYTHING they wanted & the kids grow up NOT appreciating ANYTHING. Thousands of people every year try to win a chance to do this hike & all these kids do is complain the whole time & act like it's something they could have done without. WHY didn't they stay at home then & let people who would actually appreciate it have a chance at it. UNreal. We're in for a real TREAT when we get old & these people are running things. Not amusing & NOT funny. Scenery speaks for itself.

+Mark Patterson I would give them a break Mark. They got lost in the 90-100 degree heat. They were not prepared, and like you see in survivor shows when people get tired, they complain and get irritable. If they made it to the wave and not get off course on a 2 hour hike, they probably would of enjoyed it more. I bet if they planed another trip and knew the way in cooler temps, they would have a better time.

Where is you GPS. You just put in the grid coordinate you want to navigate to and follow the arrow. Select your trail marker so your trip can be back traced. It's no wonder people die out there.

Hello Drew, I appreciate your comment but don't understand why you're so bitter. Is it because you perhaps haven't had the chance to hike this wonderful location and experience such an unforgettable event? Let me preface this by what information was given to us by our friends when we received our permits: 1) The wave is 2.75 miles from the parking lot - I'm not sure how fit you are, but for us, 2.75 miles is only about a 30 min casual jog.

Next time be prepared: bring a topo map that shows changes in grades. And what about wearing a cap with a wide brim? Those hikers resting in the shade know all about that (10:00 in the video).

shame on you guys for tagging the rock. that is one of the reasons they limit the amount of people able to go to this place and you actively help destroy it. please never hike to anywhere beautiful again like you promised in the video. it's truly shameful that you tagged the rock.

I was thinking the same and i'm just hoping that carving was there before and they just took a pic of it...whoever did that should be fined like there is no tomorrow and should not be allowed into any protected areas ever again.

more like shame on the Bureau of Land Management for not posting signs declaring that it is illegal. if they don't know any better it's not their fault. You can piss and moan all day long but if they're not told that it's wrong. Then to them it isn't wrong.

The bigger problem I think is when people head back to the trailhead, there are no such prominent landmarks there and that’s when most people get into trouble. The BLM are reluctant to put frequent trail markers to show the way, as this is meant to be a cross country hike, and would lose some of its character if it was closely signed.

I also hadn't heard about this obviously well kept secret. I believe I can understand your disappointment in getting lost but your negativity in such a beautiful wonder was so disappointing. Never once did I hear any amazement or awe at what you were seeing. Sad that regardless of the hardship, you couldn't smell the roses.

When I went there it was a local lottery in Page, Arizona If i recall correctly. We only won one ticket though, so we hiked in there in the evening, spent the night and went back early in the morning. Risky business but totally worth it.

My comments were not meant to sound bitter, but I admit they were stark and uncompromising, particularly in view of the title of your video “First Time Hiking - The Wave, Arizona.” and for that tone I apologize! No, they were more a gut reaction to the seeming oblivious disregard to three deaths that have occurred this year alone on this same “easy” hike.

I wouldn't bring anyone who doesnt have enough hiking experience to a hike like this. Beginners usually can bare 1, or 2 hour easy hike. Unless I am just looking for bitching like this. It is very stressful during the hike, especially for people who lead the hike. No one will enjoy the hike.

Your planing on taking a day hike that is physically stressful on your body, yet you only slept for 2 1/2 hours? To Craig Mac who said give the kids some slack on the horrible attitude because they are tired and irritable, those two girls had the horrible attitude from the very beginning, prior to the exhaustion of the hike or heat. I really hope your team did not make those markings "Mike was here", if so, I hope you get fined. Those kinds of actions are the mere reason natural places like these are restricted and limited on permits, can I say immaturity and disrespectful to its fullest.
