Open and honest about your mistakes and willingness to learn and grow means you are absolutely the "gold standard" of a foster family. ❤

Oof, 15 hours? We need every year, but I think 6 hours of training in NY.

When we were fostering in Massachusetts we needed to renew our license every two years but there was no continuing education and no CPR/first aid certification requirements. And even though there was a six week class we took prior to becoming foster caregivers, I was entirely unprepared to care for a child who had experienced trauma and had PTSD. Our (now adopted) daughter's social worker's suggestion was to disrupt the placement rather than give us extra support. We stuck it out, learned, and got better at it thanks to the local community. It makes me so sad the state doesn't do better.

I come from Massachusetts. Massachusetts should do a whole lot better. Kids who need placement are lucky to have people like you, stepping up to the plate.

I was born and raised in Massachusetts and fostered 8 years there until we moved to Alberta, Canada. I agree, Massachusetts needs to do better. The support we get here in Alberta is incredible. We’ve been fostering over 9 years here now and as soon as you even hint of a problem you or a child are having, you get supports put in place immediately which can include special skill fees, extra respite hours, cleaning services for up to 6 months, and many more. One of my close’s friends retired from Child & Family Services and hearing what it’s like here, she’s blown away.

We are in Washington State and have to renew our license every three years. They reminded us 90 days prior. We need 24 training hours. There are a lot of e-learning classes and webinars for us, so it’s easy to get the hours. I really enjoy taking these. It’s called Alliance Cares here.

In Minnesota, we have to do 12 hours of educational credits every year. We only renew every 2 years but they check in every year.

The thing with life insurance, sometimes it's better to invest the money into buying a plan from a mortuary and buying the plot or paying in advance for a cremation package. Wonder if they take that in lieu of life insurance. Insurance companies, regardless of type, love to take our money but don't so much love fufilling the services we paid for. I've worked mostly with medical insurance and long term care and long term disablity insurances moreso than life insurance but working with those has put a bad taste in my mouth towards insurance as a whole. The hoops to jump through, ugh.

I license foster families in Indiana. We ask about health and life insurance coverage to ensure financial stability in the event of a medical emergency or death. Lots of bankruptcies are filed due to medical debt and hardship after a funeral/lost income.

I’m just curious as to how you can transfer counties without actually moving? I live in Norway so I don’t really have much knowledge about how this works 🤔

We live close to a metro city so we originally were licensed for that city because of the need. Though, we had issues with the way things were run there. So we opted to transfer to the county we reside in the suburbs.
