I would have loved to hear the rest of the story. I already know it, but I love the way he tells stories. Unfortunately, the extra time to tell the story would be an ad they no longer had time to run...which would cost the network literally millions of dollars. It's sucks, but to keep a show on the air, sometimes they have to do what I have taught my children as, "Take the small *suck* to avoid the big *suck*."

In ancient Greece, those who wanted to be politicians had to study more years than anyone else, and then they had to be politicians for life, with no access to private property. They lived in houses provided by the State, with food provided by the State, all their lives. They had political power but no access to economic power. This way, most politicians were driven by vocation instead of greed. It can be done, It has been done, but people have to know this is possible and fight for it.

Most of America's current generation(s) are frankly too lazy to be bothered with truly intellectual discourse...as evidenced by BOTH major party campaigns in the last election. As such, if you want to make them care about something, you...unfortunately...have to speak their stunted pseudo-language. It's not about *being* intelligent; it's about using a catchy, hip gimmick to make at least some of them care.

Actually yeah, Einstein has been wrong before. Towards the end of his life, he basically rejected most ideas that came into conflict with his own. (One notable example is that he called Quantum Entanglement "Spooky Action at a Distance")

I guess it implies that we have to look at "smarts" differently. These days, being smart is an insult, as if you belong to some sort of cult. It's the same attitude that allows smart people to be disparaged as "elitists". It's almost criminal to be smart these days. We never used to thumb our noses at smart people who wanted to achieve great things. Now, they are seen as snobs and out of touch with the "real" world. It's the same as "respect" and "politeness". Those things are evil now, they make our country "soft". And those attitudes have us where we are today.

Tyson makes an interesting point here. It is rather extraordinary that an event happened 10*^9 years ago happened to be just far enough that the "ripples" from it passed earth at pretty much exactly the right time. This means such events are either rather common, or that we've made an error in our measurements.

When I had to explain this to my sobbing 7 year old all I could tell her was that it illustrates that a well-educated informed electorate is essential to democracy. You can't just claim 'this is biased' because it doesn't fit your beliefs. I then told her when Obama won I thought it meant racism was losing, but this shows us we still have a long road to go in fighting racism and misogyny. Truly I blame Hillary and the DNC, decades of failed education policy and while it is amazing how much information our phones hold its a double edged sword.
