OUR FRIEND tells the inspiring and extraordinary true story of the Teague family-journalist Matt (Casey Affleck), his vibrant wife Nicole (Dakota Johnson) and their two young daughters-and how their lives are upended by Nicole’s heartbreaking diagnosis of terminal cancer. As Matt’s responsibilities as caretaker and parent become increasingly overwhelming, the couple’s best friend Dane Faucheux (Jason Segel) offers to come and help out. This looks so sweet and sad. I'm only in my early 30's but I've noticed I can't watch movies like this anymore, it's too realistic and upsetting which I think is because as you get older you realize how precious life really is and how much certain things matter vs how little other things matter and then add in having lost a loved one it's just punch to the gut and a stomp on the heart. This is the movie to watch when I am emotionally blocked and need help releasing all the pent up feelings and tears. *Edit to fix a word

I totally agree. I’m a mom and this is my worst nightmare. But I’m sure I would have enjoyed this 10 years ago 🤷🏻‍♀️

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I assume she has cancer? If I'm wrong then let me know. But I lost my parents three months apart to cancer, and one doesn't have to be a parent to relate, it's losing a parent/family that gets to me. No matter how old someone is, you always need and want your parents/loved ones.

@@erikai1817 I yup she has terminal cancer and has two kids in the film, I looked up the bare minimum of the plot to see how sad it would be and this is a level 10 stomp on the heart and sob until you have a migraine and your face swells up kind of sad. I've lost one parent, my dad very unexpectedly and traumatically a few years ago with his death anniversary coming up in 10 days and his birthday a few days after that. Losing two parents to cancer 3 months apart is really awful, that really sucks. You never get over wanting your parent, have moments of reaching for the phone or something happens that you want to remember to tell them because you know they would find it interesting or funny but then you remember. Grief is a jerk. I think movies like this are really great for some people and help people heal but for me I'm just going to wave at it as it passes by with the other suggestions.

@@gsd715 My condolences. It is difficult to cope with, especially when they were the only family I had since I was adopted. My moms anniversary of her passing was this past Monday, and in a few months my dad. With how bad things have gotten, it makes me more sad that I can't reach out to my parents and talk to them. Being alone sucks enough, but now with this virus, even worse,...and for us all. Stay safe and hang in there.✌🏻

Such a great movie … my little sister passed away when she was just 29 , married for 6 months or so . She had ovarian cancer too. By the time she got diagnosed it was already on her liver. But she used to smile all the time even the day she died. Dakota made me cry again after 17 years and I am still crying. Casey Affleck was great and Jason Segel was phenomenal. After watching this movie every one will crave for a friend like him. As I went through the same path like her husband did I got so emotional. My sister’s husband did not get married for long time until 2019. He is still one of our family (even he was married only for 6 months and never had a chance to have a kid ) and became a father of a baby boy. He visited my parents house with his wife and son. We also accepted his wife as our sister. Some pain never goes away.

On everything I know my family had the same exact situation. Our aunt Elaine died at 29 of ovarian cancer right after she met the man of her dreams. It's eriely similar to the exact situation my family went through. So sorry for your loss. We all lose apart of our self when something like that happens

Can I please ask you... Your post is so similar to what I'm going through, I'm 29, had a baby boy a year and a half ago and my stomach never went back down, I had a multitude of symptoms starting with extreme pelvic pain at night, mid sleep, mornings to now all over my body with a lot of other things but they're focusing on my liver. Did your little sister start getting Neuro symptoms? And have a swollen abdomen? I'm sorry I'm just scared and I only drank when I was young so my liver issues wouldn't be from alcohol atleast I know (had imaging done right before Christmas shutdown so I've only read scary MyChart results and "followup"). May she rest in peace 🕊️

@@dxxl- no not really. I went to her house to visit her and saw her a bit bigger tummy. I thought she was pregnant but she was not . Then she complained about nausea. I did her ultrasound and found out the mass in her ovary. It was a 12 cm diameter tumour. She just had a bigger tummy and nausea. When the surgeon opened her tummy it was an open and shut case. We had nothing to do as it was already metastasized . Please check with ultrasound, possibly a CT scan too.

The only thing I will say now is that if Dakota or the movie does not get some recognition of awards, I will not get mad, because it has been a challenge for the actors, the director and especially for Matthew and his family, and I am happy and excited to know that we will see this movie soon, that it will leave a beautiful message, just like Nicole was.

Saw this at TIFF in September 2019! It's been so long I almost forgot about it, and they changed the name from The Friend to Our Friend. Pretty good movie, very sad though obviously. It was so cool seeing the director and the real-life Matt do a Q&A after the movie, you can tell it's very important to both of them. Excited to see it again!

@Nathan Hatfield No he's not a rapist. I think he explained the actual situation in various interviews and he took responsibility for what happened. He went through a lot of insult and humiliation although what he did wasn't exactly the worse thing that people do. Still he took it and he suffered and many people like you boycotted him and his films and because of that, even with his immense talent he was overlooked and underappreciated by everyone and didn't get enough films to work on. People really need to learn how to keep someone's personal and professional life apart. Give him a chance. At least, he's not like Shea LeBouf or something.

I just recently watched these and it's quite good and very sad and different. I felt for the husband and his lucky to have a good and loyal friend Dane.
