I have a low chain link fence. I was very concerned when I moved into my house with my rescued Great Pyrenees. She has never even tried to escape. I am sure that this is because I rescued her from a home where she was left with no food or water. Tied around the waist with a rope to a tree.... and nursing three puppies. My friend and I cut her loose and gave her and the puppies food and water. I called every agency in Oklahoma City only to be told "she's on the list". I began working with the Bella Foundation (Angels on earth) It took me 2 months to rescue her. She was so ill and malnourished when I took her to my vet that (as I was told much later) I was the only person in the world who believed she would survive.... And survive she did!!! We have been together for 4 years now. She went from being afraid of the world to being the friendliest most loving dog ever!! Great Pyrenees are beautiful intelligent and yes independent creatures. You must respect this independent nature to be a worthy Human to this amazing dog!!!

Man my Pyrenees border collie mix won’t stay home I haven’t been able to to keep him contained. We live about a mile from my kids elementary school and he keep going up there to find them. Yesterday he took my other dog and one of the goats with him, we found all three of them hanging out at the school during recess.

I adopted a shelter dog who turned out to be an English Pointer about 11 months old. He is sweet, funny, understands basic commands, and can jump my 6 ft. fence going after squirrels or other dogs. Following the advice of a German girl expert at this very thing, I bought prey toys and play with him in the house. Outside I had no choice but a 20' tether. I'm on Social Sec. and am 76. He is on the tether several times a day with me outside with him and we are making a life together. We take car rides as well and he adores them....telling the world grandma has a huntin' dog!

I recommend cattle panels. It’s much stouter than the welded wire and add a hot line above the fence line to keep your jumper down. For the digging we made a rebar barrier that you drive into the ground and attach to the fence. They still dig but stop because they’re still seeing the rebar a foot down. Since y’all are in Texas I recommend using the tool developed by the Texas FFA for attaching the clips to tposts. It comes in 6” and 3” sizes; it has a flathead on one side and the other side has a hole for wrapping the ends up. I’ll see if I can find the link if you want.

Thank you for the tips Bob! I've thought about using cattle panels. We use them to shore up certain sections of the fence, but it just seems it would be expensive to run the whole fence line with cattle panel. Maybe when money is better!

Our Great Pyrenees is now 18 months old. We have 2 acres fenced that I've reinforced.Some double height at 6-8' but most 4' with barbedwire on top. He hasn't escaped yet but I think that he just hasn't figured it out yet. I'm keeping my fingers crossed as I continue to think of ways to outsmart him. We have coyotes here in the Nevada desert. I'm sure that he wants of piece of them.......

I came to this video in desperation this evening. I have been beaten by an approximately 60 to 75 pound great Pyrenees. She has gotten out more times than I can count. I have an electric wire across part of the fence and obviously she’s gotten out from that. I put barbed wire at the top of a fence and she’s gotten out some other kind away which I’m not even sure. Thanks much for the video.

We had a throwback Pyr that hit the average weight of 185 Lbs. He was not a jumper. Our other one was 135 Lbs and did jump the 4 foot high field fence. So I went right to the Electric fence wire. Ran one line across the top and one line a few inches off the ground. You don't want the low wire accidentally starting a fire if it contacts the grass/weeds. They both got one shock from the wire over a one week period and that is all it took. I was then able to disconnect the Charger but left the wires up. Never a problem after that. They just saw the wire and yellow insulators. They both lived out their lives past their average life span, and we miss them both and always will. One day I was told Animal Control had seized a couple Pyrs from a guy who was mistreating them so I checked in to that. Adopted one male and he seems to be very content inside our fence. Hr was skinny but has gained a good amount of weight now and shaping up and getting stronger. Poor guy was so matted it took scissors and a lot of clipping to get him right. We are now his flock/herd to protect. In my 75 years, I have had many dogs but the Pyr takes the top spot,,,,,,, If you live on a large piece of land. They are not good in the city with close neighbors. They do work at night and bark. Thanks for the vid. OH, and, They howl like a Wolfe.

Goodness. The struggle is real! Adopted a GO found by the interstate in KC Thanksgiving 2021. He was 60# and most of his hair was missing. We already had 7 rescued dogs and he was 8. 10ac 4’ field fence with 2 lines of barbed wire. (You know this song and dance) We have twin 5yo kids. Didn’t want a hot wire. We have a front 5 AC the house is in and a back 5ac with weaker field fence back there in spots. We keep the back 5 closed to dogs except in winter when the poison ivy and tick season is over. The other dogs don’t jump but we have left the back closed to them this winter because of Biggie. He is jumping the front and back… doesn’t matter. Fi GPS collar, two lighted collars, a regular collar, a harness… have to sit in drive and watch him so he doesn’t jump. Our lives revolve around our rescued GP and keeping him safe. Thinking of an underground wire system a neighbor uses on his but he only had 3.5 of his AC done. Not sure if that was a system limitation. Concerned about a hot wire because our house is in the middle of our front 5ac and we have to pull through the gate multiple times a day. SOS
@WillowRidgeAcres
@WillowRidgeAcres Жыл бұрын
We tried the Fi GPS collar and the Whistle collar. We didn’t have good enough cell phone reception in our area for the Fi, wish it would have worked, I liked the Fi collar. We didn’t have a good experience with the Whistle collar. Mack was able to break the transmitter off his collar within days and chewed it up. Not very durable. Hot wire is still the best option. I understand the concern with little children but the voltage just feels like a strong static shock, shouldn’t be enough to actually harm children. And it will only take the kids getting zapped once to learn to respect the fence.

Found your vlog, love the breed. Do you think having so many and not being engaged to the livestock could be part of the concern? @PjK: Pyrenees are LIVESTOCK GUARD DOGS. That's their breed. They're working dogs. So, yes, respect the instincts by providing FOR the instinct.. Males especially have the drive. Females seem to be easier (less restless) in smaller territories if it includes children and/ or elderly; some small backyard flocks.

Howdy from Texas! 👋 🤠 You’d be surprised though… raccoons are still able to climb our fence and would definitely pose a threat to our hens. We lost 5 hens in one night to a raccoon before moving the coop into the area with the dogs. But yes, they also protect from aerial threats. We have a lot of hawks in our area and the dogs keep an eye on the sky during the day.

hello and thanks for your input! You doing a great job on your little farm...... I just had one question? Do you thnk that just the electric wire would have kept in your dogs with your original four foot fence without having to extend it ? We just got two GP pups and are working them into thier job. Boy do they learn fast! our fence is not going to keep them in as they have already found weak points in the fence and gotten out at only 9 week old!

Thanks for watching Kia! Yes, I do believe just an electric wire added to the 4 foot fence would have worked to keep our dogs in. I wish I would have done that right away, it would have save us so much time, hard work and money. I would have gone with one electric wire just above the very top of the fence and one electric wire about a foot or two off the ground to discourage digging or pulling at the fence.

We are having a problem with our Great Pyrenees lab mix. We have a 6 foot wooden fence and he climbs and jumps it no problem. I can sum up this breed by saying they are smart enough to know that they can be stubborn, lol! So we are trying to come up with some solutions and unfortunately at the moment our finances are tight. We have talked about maybe another dog so he would not be lonely. Maybe one that is small and can’t jump the fence, lol! But I don’t know if that would work. He also ripped the wire for the electric fence off. We want to try it again and try to put it on the other side of the fence but I am seeing stories of Great Pyrenees still jumping the fence electric or not. We thought about an overhang too but that is very expensive. So we are also wondering maybe he needs a new home since we can’t give him what he needs. We have 3 kids and a big backyard but no livestock and we live in a busy street. I am so anxious one of these days he will get hit by a car.

Some will climb an 8' or even taller fence... We've done well with 4' electric net as a temporary fence. For permanent fence, I plan 4-5' of woven wire with two strands of hot wire giving it another foot. Not sure what I will do at the bottom... Either bury 1-2' of fence or put a hot wire inset. I would prefer to avoid the inset hot wire, but I am not sure how feasible it will be to bury so much fence.
@WillowRidgeAcres
@WillowRidgeAcres 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching! I guess I could have mentioned in the video, but burying fence definitely isn’t feasible in our area as we are basically on solid rock with just a couple inches of soil. Any digging would require trenching through the rock.
@that.schamp
@that.schamp 2 жыл бұрын
@@WillowRidgeAcres An option I have been seen but never attempted is to till the soil then push the fence in lying flat. If the guard is on the inside of the fence, it will usually stop any attempts to dig out, but you have to stay on top of keeping it buried, as livestock can injure themselves if it becomes exposed. If you put the guard on the outside, the dogs can still tunnel out, but it is loads more work for them to tunnel under it. You can take 4' fence and split it to get 2' guards. Of course, lining the fence with rocks is not a feasible option in our part of Texas!

We have used GP's on our farm, for eight years now. We learned when buying/looking for a good potential livestock guardian, buy from a breeder who has livestock, and has the puppies running with their mother in the herd, because their mother is already teaching them the job and that the livestock are not playmates, and these puppies when brought to the farm will begin to merge with the herd on instinct and bond to them. Don't buy from a breeder who just produces GP's and has them kenneled up and their dogs have never seen a goat or chicken. A 48-inch high, sheep/goat fence with one strand of electric wire at least 5000vdc at 18 inches off the ground (same wire that teaches our goats not to rub against the fencing) is enough to teach the GP puppies when young to respect the fence and learn their boundaries, providing there is plenty of acreage for them to roam and protect. Walk the fence boundaries 3 to 4 times daily when training new pups their territory, and they will learn to patrol that perimeter on their own. GP's don't do well with small lots like in neighborhoods or confined areas, those are the GP's that want to climb fences and run off. A GP on a large acreage farm with a job of protecting a good sized herd will not have the urge to climb fences. GP's want a job, and get bored and will test you if you don't provide them with what nature intended them to do - guard large flocks and herds on large acreage. We feel so sorry for the GP's that end up on city homes and then the owners think their GP's are testing them, have social disorders, bark all the time, and are a pain in the rear ... they are just begging you to let them do what they have done for 2000 years, guard flocks. What we see here on YOUR property is that first, it looks small, too small for GP's. 10 acres is a good starting point for GP's to not be bored and jump fences. Second, start them as puppies on a electric strand just high enough off the ground for them to touch, and learn to respect the fence at an early age. Third, you are building your fence with t-posts and welded wire mesh! That is no fence for even a goat, of course the dogs will break or as you say 'rig through' fence. Welded wire mesh is terrible, just a goat putting its front legs on it can break it. You need to use 5-6"x 8 ft round posts and sink them 30 inches in the ground, and use a woven sheep/goat fence, like Redbrand 48" tall. Your fence is not tight, and you can't make a tight fence with welded wire and t-posts. With all those dogs, you need at least 30 head of livestock to keep them busy guarding or they will get bored just running around with a few chickens and a few goats. You have to know the breed of dog you have, they will always want to roam and do other things if you don't keep them on a job with a responsibility. From what we see here, your dogs are just bored, and are telling you so. Not being mean or anything, just trying to help you understand what a great pyrenees needs to keep him happy and want to stay at home.

Thank you for watching our video and taking the time to respond. I appreciate your feedback. This video was made over a year ago and was mainly about our male Great Pyrenees, Mack, who had some anxiety when it comes to fireworks and gunshots. That was the only time he would attempt to escape. Mack was also still a young pup back then. He has since calmed down a great bit. He was never trying to escape out of boredom. God bless.

How do you keep them from chewing thought the welded wire fence. I can't have an electric fence in my township, I plan on putting up smaller mesh to keep my Pyr from being able to get his teeth into it. Funny, the vet was concerned that Apollo had a missing tooth. He chews at the fence relentlessly. The 2 x 4 welded wire will not work. We have kids and neighbors that visit with Apollo every day so not electric fence is possible,
@WillowRidgeAcres

Great question! Honestly, electric fence has been the only thing that has kept Mack away from the fence. I'm not sure any other solution would have worked as well, or at all. Unless you put up a strong (and expensive) wrought iron fence. Good luck!

So put an IPhone air tag on his collar. Petco also sells gps trackers for dogs. As for jumping fences. It’s about separation anxiety. They do not believe that you will come home. So you need to start taking them places with you. To teach them that you will come home. Then spend a lot of time with them. If that doesn’t work you might look into doggie Prozac.
@WillowRidgeAcres
@WillowRidgeAcres Жыл бұрын
We tried two different tracking collars (Whistle and Fi) both collars didn’t get good enough cell service in our area to work accurately. We haven’t tried an AirTag yet. But the new fence has worked well. He has also seemed to settle down as he’s matured in age. Thanks for watching!

Our foster mama had her puppies the other day. I took Mama to the backyard to let her go potty and separated her from the babies. Something within a Pyrenees demands he guards and runs a border check. His concern is about his flock. Typically it's where he stays. My neighbor’s GP has adopted my 5 acres, several acres across the county road, in addition to the 150 acres of his owners' land. He 'guards' my husband's walk (with cane) to the mailbox; the 2 chicken enclosures across the country rd. Occasionally I see him sitting in my orchard watching the 10 acres field across my Eastern boundary. I'm thinking he just needs his own flock. No amount of livestock or fencing is going to deter him now. He has mapped out his territory. Within this neighborhood he has a fan club of about 15 people. So, his 'guard' instincts are met but this isn't ideal for him. It cannot be stressed enough that the introduction of herd and boundaries to a Pyrenees be done at the outset of ownership. Introduction to the herd AND the boundaries is prime. Their instincts will take it from there.

We tried an e-collar on Mack once for training sessions and found the fur around his neck is almost too thick for him to feel the shock, even with the shock strength turned up. So I don’t believe an invisible fence would be effective.
