I didn't realize our egg drawings had so much influence! Is this Emily's new superpower? Not only did 1 clutch of hognose eggs summon a thunderstorm, but the second clutch summoned their drawings too!

It's actually the bacteria in the soil causing the smell which is why it smells different depending on where you are.

Ironically I watched their video again of where they got their new rat and mice racks. I was feeling a bit nostalgic for some of the really old videos but that one popped up and I watched it again to get my mouse/rat pup fix too 😊 But yes!!! That's actually a misconception! Earthworms/rainworms breathe through their skin, and can absorb oxygen from water and air equally well. They come out when it rains because the sun is dangerous to them (can dry them up) so nighttime and rainy days are the only times they can come up to eat vegetation. The rest of the time they subsist on roots!

Fun fact: as another comment mentions, the smell of rain is called "petrichor". Well, humans are able to detect rain from miles away (with some help of the wind)! Basically, when the water hits something, tiny air bubbles disperse into the air that often include the chemical geosmin, which smells like earth. Human noses are very sensitive to this chemical and can smell it in the air at concentrations as low as .4 ppb!! (for reference, 1 ppm is a general concentration of an odor humans can smell) TL;DR Humans can smell petrichor, or the smell of rain, from miles away and at concentrations as low as 1ppb!

Here in Colorado, last year we had the coolest and rainiest May and June I can remember my whole life (memories since about 1990). This year has been the driest.... many plants barely even grew this year and last year they had fungal problems.

A close family friend of mine's mother was the one who gave her pie recipes to the family that owned the dam store by Rapidan Dam. That was their house that went into the river. Luckily everyone was ok, and I believe they got all of their most important possessions out of the house ahead of time. I went to the dam and saw the house and later that day was when it went down. We forgive your thunderstorm summoning antics!!
