Things we did NOT show in the video: We did pour concrete throughout the entire cinder block wall, we added strong bracing for the roof rafters, we installed a gutter to collect rainwater and we built benches for the inside of it. Thanks for all the feedback from everybody, it has been amazing through blizzards, small hurricanes, wet heavy snow and more!

That’s a pretty cool design. Hopefully it gives you many years of usefulness! The only thing I might’ve done different is have the roof slant away from the door so water doesn’t run gushing on you as you enter.
@d.a.tsun51042 жыл бұрын
I was just commenting the same but I understand that they may have done that because the front of the green house is facing the sun. lf it were possible, I would place the door on the side, just to avoid having to install gutter.
@FolkRockFarm2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback! We did consider slanting the roof in the other direction , but the angle of the roof made most sense this way for sunlight and we do plan on putting gutters on it to collect rain water to use for our greenhouse plants !

@johnlee70852 жыл бұрын
I can definitely endorse working together, if you have sufficient humility and grace. You seem also seem like really nice people. That being said, there really are many flaws in the design. 1. The walls need to be attached to the foundation. A 1/2” hammer drill and rebar is a simple method for a simple structure with an existing slab, though there are better ways for standard construction. 2. You apparently went back to fill all the voids with concrete. And easier method would be to skin the blocks with a fiber modified mix because it’s a simple structure. 3. When mixing concrete, the more water you add the weaker the finished product. The drier the better. You really need to vibrate the concrete a lot or air voids will remain and weaken the concrete. 4. Concrete also takes a month to reach full strength. It needs several days to get to working strength even with high early concrete. You won’t notice, but premature stressing of the concrete will create micro cracks that will grow and cause failure. 5. People think of concrete as drying but it really goes through a chemical process, hydration, that requires water. If it doesn’t stay wet, it won’t gain full strength. 6. You should prewet the forms, especially blocks like you used. Otherwise the blocks suck moisture out of the mix leading to weaker concrete. 7. Placing wood inside the blocks will lead to rot in the wood, even pressure treated wood. 8. Placing wood inside the block also means the tiny amount of concrete is non structural. Really better to put a metal connector (24” straps with 18” embedded?) in the concrete and then attached to the posts. 9. Rather than insetting the 2x4’s between the posts, attach them 4” high on the exterior of the posts. See structural post and beam construction. Much stronger, less cutting or room for error. 10. Joists should be stood up with bird’s mouth at the walls. Check out links to building codes for appropriate sizing. Looks like you probably needed 2x6’s, especially if cold enough for bibs/snow. There’s probably more, but I’m tired.
@tracybrown49412 жыл бұрын
Very good advice. I was wondering about the long-term structural integrity because of the way the blocks were assembled then the posts placed inside and crete poured around and into the void. Bad for the wood and bad for the integrity of the project. However, they did put a lot of work into this project and for the short term, it should serve it's purpose very well.

cool. You might want to sister the rafters, and put the 2x4's, with the thin side up, in case there is ever a snow load. We had an 1800's house, with the 2x4's laying flat on the floor, and there was a bounce and sag to the floor.

Loved the idea and build. Disliked the camera handling. Had to pause several times to see the detail and recover from dizziness and uncross eyes. We're going to build similar, except the back wall in our property is facing south so the front/door side is higher and solid wall, which is in my opinion better because when it rains or condenses, we won't get dripped on when walking in (otherwise, we'll have to do gutter over the door). Would you suggest cladding the back wall with either metal or foam with reflective alum foil? I also am debating if I should use semi opaque and white plastic corrugated since I read it's diffusing and reflecting light better than clear sheets of polycarbs, which was supposedly better for plants. What do you think?
@FolkRockFarm2 жыл бұрын
Hahaha yeah the camera hand is a work in progress!! Eventually we’re going to install a gutter for the front, we would’ve put the door in the back but the plan is to build up a raised garden bed inside along the back wall with reflective material on the wall for winter. And that’s interesting to hear about the different poly you mentioned, I’ll have to look into that! Thanks for the info, glad you liked the build and I hope you love your greenhouse too!
