Richard Mille is the exact definition of Nouveaux Riches in watch world. And that’s a good thing, because it draws a clear line between Old Money (non Genta Pateks) and Nouveaux Riches.

I will go with my own favorite unpopular opinion : Genta inspired (non round bezel, integrated bracelets) watches are ugly and should disappear. They are ugly because : 1) Style from the 40’s and the 50’s was 20th century acme. It only went downhill from there 2) they are symbols of the 1970’s (and 80’s) which will be remembered as the time when the Western World had a stroke and never recovered. Nothing to celebrate about.

I was at a wedding wearing a 39mm royal oak. Someone else at the wedding was wearing a modded steel cased casioak. We were talking about the design for a few minutes throughout the wedding and how cool we both thought the shape of the watch was. I admired his casioak and he never noticed that mine was similar but different. Nor did it matter for me to tell him. I like the design of the RO more than the name itself. I thought it was interesting that casio sort of integrated the RO design and that people wearing it have no idea where the design came from. 😃

RM really just is Hublot for people who need an even more expensive gaudy status symbol. Sure, there's a certain amount of impressive technology built into them, but the most important feature of any RM is it's price tag.

I feel like I’m the only person on earth who wants one only because of the engineering and design 😂. It almost turns me off from them, since if I ever did get one, people would all think the only point was to flex. Hublot is trash because they put 200$ movements in $30k watches. But RM design every single part down to the tiniest screws from scratch for every watch, it’s mind blowing IMO.

A JLC Polaris looks like a mall watch in the same way that a submariner looks like an invicta , a Patek looks like a DW, or how the Beatles sound like the monkees. Don’t confuse the originals with the copies.

I own and daily wear a JLC Geophysic 1958. It’s simple, minimalistic, and not ostentatious in any way. You could easily confuse that for a ‘mall watch’ in spite of it being a heavy hitter from a horology perspective. Remember, something doesn’t have to be all iced out to be extreme quality

People who make the comment that JLC looks like a mall watch obviously is a newbie to the hobby. They've never held a real handmade timepiece. You could make the same comment about all of Patek dress watches without knowing the quality. Geez there are a lot of ignorant people out there.

I own a BB P01 and I absolutely love it. It's a legit tank of a watch, and I've never met someone else wearing one. I bump into people wearing a Rolex when I'm wearing my DJ and it boils down to "what dial do you have?..." I love the uniqueness of my P01.

Some Zenith El Primero models, Heuer Carrera chronos reissues (160 year Ann.) have minimal bezels, which I love. The dome crystal distorting the perimeter is a look I prefer

When I was in sales I learned early on not to judge anyone by anything, especially there watch. Once you form an opinion based on something so trivial you have loss all sence of direction .

JLC Master Control looks unbelievably expensive in reality. You just realize immediately this is a luxury watch. My own experience when I noticed one on my female bosses arm, was not into watches at all at the time.

Ressence has no bezel. Some Sinns have no bezel. If you are making a distinction between case bezel and an internal bezel, AP Code 11.59s have no case bezel (I guess they have an internal one, although I wonder if that is more a rehaut).

With the IWC point, I think this sort of happens with other things outside of watches too. Often the innovator of something doesn’t end up being the most famous, so while an IWC may look like some cheaper design, it’s actually that the cheaper watch took the design from IWC. People see the mall watch first, then the IWC, and assume the order they discovered them in is the same as the order in which they were designed. Very interesting to talk about for sure.

I agree with most opinions but the RM one. Tbf, at a much lower scale, I personally own and wear a Cartier Tank, a 36mm Explorer 1, and a "CasiOak" depending on what I'm wearing or where I'm going. Who says a person that wear a RM one day can't wear a Daydate 36 the next day and a Santos the next one? I think we are quick to judge a person that wears a RM because they're expensive and very "in your face" watches, but maybe for that person it's just their "fun" summer watch and they have much classier understaded pieces in their collection. Who knows :)

Which one of you two is the Tudor and who is the Rolex? Incidentally I just today bought a 34mm JLC MUT from 2005, it’s incredible with the exhibition case back and the hand finished ultra thin 849 movement which is another level of amazing. Great vid as always guys, you have such great chemistry. Happy Christmas

in the years rolex has increasingly become flashy and ostentastious, a watch for soccer players, rappers, boxers, nouveau richies and tastless people (like richard mille, which is born for those peoples). tudor may be boring, but it's catching up with what rolex used to do and to be and what was the basic reason of its success in the past. i say this as a both tudor and rolex collector.

I agree. Prefer the sleekness of the 5 digit models over all of the newer 6 digit and ceramic bezel models (though the ceramic at least adds function / durability). And while the Datejusts still have nice cases and no maxicases, their fluted bezels and jubilée bracelets are just so flashy, that they remind me of jewelry

I understand I’m older and at at a certain level in my life so I don’t have to be as concerned with social standing but I disagree. My advice, don’t buy watches based on what other people think. Doesn’t really matter what “they” think. It matters what YOU think of it and how it makes you feel. That’s how I have built and continue to build out my collection. That’s what I’m handing down to my boys. Hopefully they remember the significance the piece had to me during my lifetime and it brings them enjoyment when they think of me.

No bezel is the only part of the case design of the audemars 11.59 that I don't like.. now since it's lack of bezel is one of the main apsects of the case you are stuck looking at when wearing it is a problem for me.

Ressence has some watches (maybe most/all?) without bezels. It does look a little off but their design integrates better than most others!

My favorite part of this discussion was when watches and cars actually DO matter because one's self IS one's brand. A residential real estate agent, for example really does need a nice car and watch to be taken seriously as a top professional. Also, these two hosts NEED to have nice watches and nice clothes to be taken seriously. I took a screenwriting class from one of the writers of Toy Story 2 and he said agents in Hollywood didn't take him seriously as a writer until he started dressing terribly for meetings. The industry's association with successful writers is that they live in sweatpants and don't shave. It's about meeting client's specific expectations of "professional".

62 GS Grand Seiko cases (winter, spring, etc.) all have no bezel. They do have a chapter ring however, which king of completes the look.

I work with teenagers sometimes and it seems RMs are also popular with that crowd. Teenagers want a “Richard Milly”. Not sure if its just because song writers told them so, or they actually like the designs

Jaeger-Lecoultre is such an underrated brand and this is the hill I will die on. Saying that a cheaper watch could look like a more expensive one and thats why you're not buying it is ridiculous. Knock-offs are a thing for a reason. The mall watch looks like that because of the luxury watch, not the other way around.

I live in Miami, and going to Brickell City Centre I always laugh at RM cuz I just dislike their designs so much. I’m more of a Longines, omega, Tissot guy 😂 but you know what, I’m glad RM exist. They bring diversity to the watch crowd. They have these insane designs, much like Hublot and I’m happy for the variety they have brought into the watch world ❤️ there’s something for everyone and that’s the coolest thing ever to me

JLC - It’s only when you get up close that you see how razor sharp the finishing is on both dial and movement. I do agree though that some of JLCs dials can be a little boring…the Master Ultra thin in white and blue are worlds apart….the blue dial version is incredible

Personally I only really like the cream dial on the rose gold version of the ultra thin moon. Pertty, because it makes it twice as expensive. Well, the white dial is nice, but beside the cream one, it just lost for me

Watch without a bezel is e.g. Junghans Chronoghraph or a 3hander in a Bauhaus design with almost all glass and no steel around it.

Grand Seiko makes watches without bezels. Tag Heuer recently came out with the Glassbox Carrera that doesn't have a bezel.

Christian Critcised JLC for pricing their watches out of the market when compared to similar brands in the price point. However, how easy is it to say that an item is over priced when we including myself do not stop to question production capacity or volume of the brands we are comparing or their regions where expenses like skills, over heads do differ. Also, other premiums such as brand heritage, hisory of the design etc Even I have to ask myself if when comparing, if I am being fair or emotional?

I disagree with you regarding Tudor, i have more Rolex watches in my collection than any other brand, but i still went for a Tudor especially their full black ceramic and their full bronze watch. Those kind of watches that Rolex will never make. I see them daring trying different materials with super good quality. Im also considering the full Titanium pelagos 39 as well.

Caffeine isn't worth it. I quit for several months and found that I had more and better overall energy. The convenience is addictive (in addition to the actual addictive qualities). To be able to choose when you don't feel tired, and to be able to displace your need for sleep at times when sleep isn't as much of an option. The effectiveness wears off though, and you are left with less energy overall. I admit that I have found that other people have different experiences and that it is dependent on the person.

I’m autistic and have POTS. I need coffee to get rid of brain fog in the morning and to regulate my bloop pressure. Also high doses of caffeine make me VERY sleepy.

The bezel works as the frame. Like how a picture frame completes a painting, a bezel finishes the watch.

In all honesty in terms of design there are some mental gymnastics is the watch community, there are a lot of watches from big watchmakers with really meh designs, with mall watch design language. I get that some people really value the mechanical aspect and the history of traditional watch manufacturers, but take those two points away and the whole thing, especially vis a vis fashion watches starts to look very different.

Tudor: They withdrew from the market, because their market position was squeezed, then made two attempts to re-enter the market, with some really weird and wacky watches, totally different from Rolex. These were NOT popular. So they re-entered the market again, and have taken it slowly slowly. The P-01 is living proof, that the market is very conservative. No more proof of that, than the popularity of Rolex?
