This video is part of an ongoing series - like a vlog - about our project aiming to RESTORE soil fertility in Valle de los Pedroches in Andalusia, Spain.
We are located in a landscape called Dehesa in Spanish. It is like an oak savanna and is said to be very biodiverse. However, much of it has been overgrazed and the yearly drought of 6 months with NO RAIN makes recovery difficult. Many good practices from other climate zones with frequent rainfall DO NOT WORK here and have contributed to the bad situation in the past.
First and foremost we are restoring soil fertility and DO NOT AIM to deliver a product into any market at this time. We are not doing agriculture or ranching in order to produce something and turn a profit. We see PROFITABILITY as an OUTCOME that will emerge ONCE we have restored the land.
Learn more about our project at: www.caimito.eu You might also visit our shop there to support this project.
If you want to know more who is behind this project: www.stephan-schwab.com/links
Locations in this video might be referred to using a designator. A custom map allows you to better follow along: www.google.com/maps/d/embed?m...
Some simple guidelines for commenting:
- Questions are far more helpful to other viewers than suggestions
- You are watching past events and we might have solved issues or moved on already
- Most people live in temperate climate zones with ample rainfall and good agricultural practices from there might not apply on our land.
- You are watching us learning and we all want to enjoy the journey and knowledge acquisition. Please refrain from telling us how something has to be done as your situation most certainly is vastly different than ours.
- Understand that culture, rules and regulations vary around the world. Be respectful when speaking about the people you see in the video.

This is amazing I had not seen these dashboards and sensors before, I wonder what the error will be on these. Anyway, I hope this management system is really successful for you and I look forward to seeing the progress made. bravo !

Wonderful to see new green areas appearing. PS - Perhaps the mower shown in the video might be right for the job, as it bundles/compresses the cut material in front of the mower?

If the material is "normal", then it falls and gets under the wheels. At least it's supposed to. We will see once the conditions are right

See, it turned out that the most important thing on your land is that old well that gets filled for free from the reservoir that's kilometers away.

It has been that way all the time. Most, however, do not appreciate this kind of infrastructure and a lot of people had to truck in water for their animals last year

Would be interesting to hear what Angel thinks of all this 'weird stuff' you're doing on your property.

interesting, what is the app/system you showed there for the watering management? I would have thought that evaporation is a high factor at this time of year. It would be interesting to see an area irrigated at night to see the difference.
@ProjectGranjaCaimito
@ProjectGranjaCaimito 25 күн бұрын
The screenshots are from Home Assistant (www.home-assistant.io) Irrigation at night is better to use less water. But if you rely on solar power and don't have a very large battery bank, then that's not an option. There is always a tradeoff decision to be made. In this case it's water usage or energy usage based on available energy storage. Keep in mind that Home Assistant is a general purpose automation platform. It is not a turnkey solution and does require a LOT in the background in terms of infrastructure like Internet of Things and many network connected devices. It's a tool not a solution.

Have you thought about pumping water into a tank positioned high on your property and using the head pressure to irrigate at night without the use of pumps? 30m height is 3 bar pressure
@ProjectGranjaCaimito
@ProjectGranjaCaimito 25 күн бұрын
This is a good idea but only applies to watering a garden or something where low flow is enough. The smallest wobbler puts out 270 liters per hour. That makes it 2700 liters per hour for an irrigation line of just 10. It's not so much the pressure but mostly the flow that counts. So that tank would have to be pretty big. A pond is much easier and cheaper to have.
@ProjectGranjaCaimito
@ProjectGranjaCaimito 25 күн бұрын
And to add. That tank inside the farmyard is just a buffer. It is not the water supply in itself.
@Marpleman
@Marpleman 25 күн бұрын
@@ProjectGranjaCaimito I did wonder about the flow so I looked up some flow calculations online that suggest a 2" bore pipe over say 200m with 3 bar head could deliver close to 9500l per hour. Yep the tank would need to be larger than your buffer tank but if a 2nd hand tank becomes available and can be brought to a suitable location then I'm thinking that would be easier than digging a pond, no evaporation, improved water quality. Anyway, keep doing what you're doing I've been watching your channel for quite a while and I'm interested in your efforts to improve your land

That's right in theory. Unfortunately the reality here on the ground does not allow it. But ... It's no problem. We adapt and find a way. Over time - of course

@@ProjectGranjaCaimito Its like 30kWh of lifepo4 storage for 15k. i once spammed you, i use used car/truck AGM, EFB batteries, they are not perfect, need some maintanance, but i buy them for like 30Eur/kWh, which i can get back after selling them in recycle center. Basically storage for free.
@ProjectGranjaCaimito

The problem is that whatever battery we use it needs to be compatible with the SMA Sunny Island. And our trusted installer will not use used car batteries for liability reasons. So I either accept that or learn how to do things myself. I guess I have enough on my plate already ;-) I've learned not to mess with systems that you need to rely upon.

@@ProjectGranjaCaimito I understand. But you can ask him, to make 2nd smaller system, MPPT 60A controller is like 60Euro, for 48V system its almost 3kW power, then inverter to AC, or directly you can use DC. Depends if time or money is more valuable.
@ProjectGranjaCaimito

Storage costs are coming down and down. The goal is to grow a really big system for a LOT more than you see today. Electricity is very flexible and can be routed to where it is needed. In other words: we are basically our own utility and should treat it as such.
