Aluminum tierods are awesome when they show how they bend under a rock and spring back like nothing ever happened but that same flex when the front is locked and you're trying to steer over an obstacle that put loads against the wheels not only is ugly but can take the rod ends as well. Look in the video in slow motion as Kevin tries to steer driver. The passenger wheel is going driver as Kevin wants BOTH wheels to go driver , but the driver wheel gets cocked towards the inside while the tierod is flexing like a biatch. Not a fan of aluminum tierods. Yes they're big and shinny oh and they flex for sure. Bla bla bla.

The anti-flip on that rod end will make it weaker. But looking at where it broke, you can see some tiny voids, and a really large grain structure. Which suggest a poor forging job. They will definitely want to talk to their manufacturer.

Pretty easy to see, the rod ends are way too long. They need to be as short as possible and the big beafy ally bar needs to be as long as possible, giving just enough length to the rod ends for adjustment. The way it it there's massive leverage against the thread on the rod end, which is so much narrower and weaker than the rest of it.

My Barnes aluminum steering linkage uses a longer aluminum bar and shorter tierod ends. I do like to see how much flex is in the aluminum bars when compared to the steel bars and not stay deformed. They always bounce back in to stock form.

I broke my aluminum fusion on the Rubicon and I don't think I was doing really that much to it it broke right where the rod end goes in to the aluminum bar. It has a lifetime warranty so they did send me out a new bar and the tie rod ends I got are inch and a half offset and I guess they make a 2 inch offset . I think I'll keep my inch and a half offset. 👌

Watching the video, I think when your front end fell off that rock it stressed that tie rod. You fell right onto the tie rod, it bent a good two to three inches, making the weak point that driver-side tie rod end. You came down fairly hard, and that was a lot of weight transferred to the end. So, while that wasn't a particularly harder obstacle than anything else you have ever done... you were at a really weird articulation angle there and your spotter was not making it any easier for you.

That’s definitely something that needs to be diagnosed, if it was faulty, imagine if you hit an unexpected pothole on the highway and that snapped? Michael Sullivan that’s correct the weight of the vehicle was on it and thank God it snapped there, the point I was trying to make was it could’ve happened on the way home if it was already stressed and the reason I bring that up is because it happened to my best friend coming back from a trip something similar, the part is heavy duty and it broke at the stress point right where the nut is tightened. Not saying it was a bad part at all, just glad it didn’t happen unexpectedly somewhere else at high speed. Also the reason I stated the manufacturer will examine it is because they sent it back to the manufacture to do test on the metal. Happy 2022 to you✌🏻

It's 100% the placement of the hydro assist. The video shows exactly what happened. The aluminum tie rod is visibly bowing because of the force applied by the HA. Kevins driver side wheel is towed in because of the bowing tie rod right before the break. The tie rod end sheared.

A couple of points from an armchair engineer. The rod end with the fracture mode appears to be extremely hard, as in overly hardened during heat treating. Not having the tie rod in hand for inspection, however high stress parts that are threaded don't use a cut thread but a rolled thread. The root of the thread is a stress riser on a cut thread, while a rolled thread reforms the material. The rod end appears very beefy, even larger than rod ends on military off-road 5 or 7 ton trucks.

Thanks for the post mortem on the tie rod break. You assessment about the angle on the steering assist ram makes a lot of sense with regards to the vector of force applied to the end of the tie rod. The break does look like a structural flaw in the lattice of the steel though so your suspicion that it could have been multiple factors sees very plausible. I hope you will update us on what the results at the lab are.

If you look at the broken material of the tie rod end, the grains look really large. If you can see different colors with the naked eye, that means the alloy materials are not finely distributed throughout the metal. Instead you get chunks of carbon and whatever else. You guys are kind of right about the angle of the ram, but that angle is no where near as much angle as the tie rod end itself. It’s own angle is what puts the most stress on itself. #straighttierodsforlife.

Yo, the same exact thing happened to the TRE on my buddy's new RPM steering. He waited 14 months & TRE snapped on the shakedown. Well that's not a good look for RPM's forged TREs. I wanted to swap out my Steersmarts steering for RPM but they were backordered to the moon! They did have aluminum sleeve replacements for Yeti XD tierod/draglink, reusing Steersmarts TREs so I "settled" for that...glad now that I did.

I was hoping to see Beck's Jeep wheel. I bet y'all were a little mad about that braking. Had such high hopes when ya installed it. Thanks for your adventures I enjoy them. Keep it up. ✌️😎

That fracture looks like a Brittle fracture where perpendicular force is applied. So your Ram set up along with the deformation of the aluminum tie rod and the length of the forged end, could have allowed enough side loading to sheer it off.

Wow, talk about a tie-breaker…That was an epic tie rod end failure. Good to see you were able to piece it together and make it to camp

Regardless of the power ram mounting that tie rod shouldn't have busted , you where already past the hard part it just let loose/failed... That looked like a fun trip for everyone !!
