We were going through a historic mental health crisis BEFORE the virus, and now it's accelerating during COVID. Yang talks mental health with Dr. Jean Twenge, discussing how smartphones are making us (and our kids) miserable, tips to stay sane during quarantine, and the policies we need right now to help millions of Americans.

The content, guests and their perspectives are invaluable. We need to find a way to harness the youtube algorithm to get this discussion into the ears of all those parents on their phones too much. Part of surfing the algorithm comes with adopting some of the techniques you are mentioning. I think these podcasts could go as viral as other yang content if there were small changes made to better utilize the algorithm.

With all due respect Element money is not just simple and from a politician, getting money to me IS caring about me. It means giving me more options to take care of myself and those I care about, which money doesn’t guarantee but sure makes a hell of a lot easier and more accessible. I totally got Ron’s comment and don’t think he meant it to sound dismissive. If you carefully reread it, it sounds like he means quite the opposite actually. I think he meant that Andrew is about taking action and not just having “great ideas” or knows to “say the right things.” I’m SO OVER politicians and corporate managers who have “great ideas” that just stay “great ideas” because NO ONE ever acts on them.

Shortly after smart phones came out I could see several aspects that would certainly fuck people up. Especially people in their sensitive teenage years. It will only get worse if someone like Yang isn't in a position (preferably President) to work on regulating the negative aspects of such technology. Andrews overall vision, incite, knowledge and comprehensive understanding of human nature is second to none, as far as I have seen. Andrew can see the very roots of the problems, because he understands human nature so well. If the problems involve people, understanding human nature is a must to solve those problems. Yang has that covered in spades.

Having UBI in place will improve people's mental health in a big way. So will universal healthcare if it includes mental healthcare. One thing that really helped improve my mental health over the past few years is the practice of monthly goal setting. I have a system in which I only set one more goal than the number of goals I was able to complete the previous month, so as not to get overwhelmed. The system is great and I feel like I'm truly embracing life the way I always wanted to. As far as trying to regulate the use of smartphones and modern technology... good luck with that. Andrew, please don't make too many enemies around this topic or let it be the hill you're willing to die on. Correlation is not causation. How would you go about regulating it anyway? Make it illegal for 15-year-olds to create social media accounts?

I think parents are just going to have to figure this one out on their own. I talk to certain parents about the dangers of online predators, lack of socialization, etc. Their response? An exasperated "Oh I know, it's horrible." Guess what they do about it? Absolutely nothing. Or, "I'm gonna take that phone away", which would just be lazy parenting. It's never, "I'm going to have a discussion about the detriments of being online as an underage person, and use parental controls". Or, "I need to talk to my son/daughter about this".

Thank you Andrew. I am a Psychology major and I've often felt frustrated and confused because most people don't seem concerned about mental health. And yes most people are afraid to tell people that they are depressed. That's why we're all sitting at home trying not to panick because we think everyone else is doing better, myself included. So thank you for confirming in this podcast that we are all struggling and not doing well right now. I don't like being this way but I am relieved to hear that I am not alone in these feelings and in fact I am normal.

While I think technology provides its own challenges, I don't think the overall mental health is getting worse because of it. I think the young kids today are finding themselves stuck in a cycle of abuse that go back to the beginning of human history. I think the real uncomfortable conversation we have to have is that as adults, we just don't treat children well, and we don't take our responsibility to raise them seriously because we are too self-absorbed, because we haven't recovered from our own personal traumas. Psychology is a relatively young field, and I think we're just starting to realize how disconnected and detached we really are from our true loving potential. Technology can play to our worse instincts, but it's just a symptom. Intergenerational trauma is where the real story is.
@michaelshannon5032
@michaelshannon5032 4 жыл бұрын
Should we not treat symptoms, to use your words? I agree with you that there are multiple reasons why we have been seeing spikes in poor mental health. However, much of Twenge’s work revolves around the sharp uptick of depression and suicide in teens. Upticks in that age group like we have never seen or experienced before. I don’t think parenting got that much worse in a five to eight year stretch. Giving social media to a kid who isn’t at least somewhat socially developed is having disastrous results because they are having trouble discerning what is and isn’t affecting their lives in a real way. Hell, most adults have this same issues with social media. I think turning a blind eye and ignoring the effect social media is having on our society is a huge mistake. Understanding how it effects our mental health is crucial because it is something that we use every single day. Look into Twenge’s data on teen depression and it’s correlation with social media use and screen time. While it is correlational, she also adjusts for socioeconomic status and we are seeing the same results. It would be great if we had a control group, but there aren’t many teens around without a smartphone to study. It’s strong data.

non capitalist and poorer countries have a much stronger family dynamic. as we gain wealth we suppliment the security of family. if someone was to lose a job perhaps they can help out at home or in the family. with more money as a society we become more and more independant paying for insurance policies to take care of us. I am pro capitalist but would love to see a focus on strengthening the family Dynamic. the Liberals have always been for a strong working family. the Left seems to be against the Nuclear Family.

@@TheSynisterMinister I agree with you to an extent. But not everything lands in the realm of politics. I think we often take extremely complicated issues and break them down as simply as left v. right, conservative v. liberal, and/or capitalist v. socialist. This is a perfect example. Kids can have a great family life and also have an addiction to social media, or at least have trouble coping with its externalities. These things can happen simultaneously. That's why we shouldn't only focus on having strong families, but also have a government that is pro-humanity. Saying non-capitalist/poorer countries have stronger family dynamics is a bit of a generalization in my opinion. It is also slightly obtuse considering our standing in the world.. It would be like if a millionaire went up to a poor person and said I'm jealous of how awesome your family is even though you will never have the same chance at success as I will. Many of these families have stronger dynamics because that is ALL that they have. I'm sure if given the opportunity, they would take a chance at balancing their family dynamic for more freedoms in a heartbeat.

@@michaelshannon5032 I think you raise really good points. It's my hypothesis that the increase in depression and suicide is just a new expression of attachment disorders that have stayed at mostly the same level. I think in a way, it's the result of generations of lies coming to a head with the reality of truth that technology has brought us. Tech has shown us the truth, that most people are self centered, most people have addictive personalities, etc. Things we could lie to ourselves about before are nakedly disproven with social media and the internet. Kids aren't being raised with the emotional tools to deal with that. Young people now have basically the world on their shoulders, and in most cases, don't have real emotional support from their parents or adults in their life to deal with it. Kids don't really trust their parents, but they end up feeling guilty because they don't understand how devastating emotional neglect is. I feel like this is a Pandora's box situation. We now know more than we ever wanted to about the dark side of human behaviour. How do we find love for ourselves and each other anyway? In my view, trying to wrangle tech seems to be avoiding the real issues at home.

Holy shit, Twenge? I know that name! From Dr. Peter Gray's book Free to Learn: . “One thing we know for sure about anxiety and depression is that they correlate strongly with people’s sense of control or lack of control over their own lives. Those who believe they are in charge of their own fate are much less likely to become anxious or depressed than are those who believe their are victims of circumstances beyond their control…the data indicate that young people’s sense of control over their own destinies has declined continuously.” - p. 16 . “Twenge and her colleagues analyzed the results of many studies that had assessed locus of control with groups of college students and children age 9-14 from 1960 to 2002. They found for both age groups that over this period, average scores shifted dramatically, away from the internal toward the external end of the scale, so much so, in fact, that the average young person in 2002 was more external (more prone to lack of personal control) than were 80 percent of young people in the 1960s.” - p. 16-17 . “Free play is nature’s means of teaching children they are not helpless. In play, away from adults, children really do have control and can practice asserting it. In free play, children learn to make their own decisions, solve their own problems, create and abide by rules, and get along with others as equals rather than as obedient or rebellious subordinates…In school, by contrast, children cannot make their own decisions; their job is to do as they are told…children who felt most pressured by their parents to achieve in school and were most frequently shuttled from one extracurricular activity to another were the most likely to feel anxious or depressed.” - p. 18 . “research psychologists… conducted a study of happiness and unhappiness in public school students grades 6th through 12th…participants filled out a questionnaire indicating where they were, what they were doing, and how happy or unhappy they were at the moment. The lowest levels of happiness by far occurred when children were at school, and the highest levels occurred when they were out of school and conversing or playing with friends.” - p. 18-19

Sorry, I agree with you quite a lot, but this time I don't. If you had any idea how many young people's lives I have touched in a positive way as a streamer on Twitch, you wouldn't be so quick to treat technology as the problem. Adults are the problem. Parents who don't treat their children with respect are the problem. If anything we should ask ourselves: Why have we deluded ourselves so heavily with "stranger danger" paranoia, that we restrict young people to only peers or family for relationships? Here is an example: I was friends with a girl in a LOTR group on Facebook. After a few years, we added each other so we didn't clutter up the comments. Further, we wanted to talk more about personal stuff, not just rumors about the Hobbit movies. She confided in me that her parents thought real life friendships mattered more than friends online. It didn't matter if the school was filled with smokers and drinkers. It didn't matter that she really did not like her classmates' lifestyle. Fast forward a couple more years and she said her parents were fed up with her online friends. She was to block them all immediately. This included me. I was very very hurt by this, but does the lady in the podcast consider my pain? No. Furthermore, I checked in with her 2 years later on my secondary Facebook account, and she was a completely different person. She gave up on her hobbies to "fit in" at school. She apparently tried to date one of those guys she always said she hated when I first spoke to her. And guess what? He had dumped her recently with no explanation. And he started dating someone else the next day. In spite of all this, her parents still had a strict no friends online rule. So I said I am always here on my primary account if she ever needs to talk, and I logged out. Moral of the story? Some young people just won't fit in at their geographic location. Some people need to search far and wide for a friend they can truly love. Heck, once that happens, they can start searching for a boyfriend or girlfriend. All this requires parents to stop being stuck in the 90s with paranoia. AND it requires parents to actually pay attention to who their kid talks to online. I once spent 2 years talking to a Hungarian teen, while her mom would talk to me from time to time. After that, I traveled to them for a visit. It was awkward at times (language barrier and the first time they met a foreigner as a friend), but the end result was a stronger relationship with the girl, and her mom trusts me. All of this did wonders for my self esteem. So before you start blaming a computer, maybe you need to open your eyes to the potential the Internet has at bringing lonely and "don't quite fit in" people together. ✌

I'm not sure how talking will help with mental issue, it is the content that they are exposed to. When talking they need something to talk about anyway, but on social media they can get more topics to talk about and talk to more people more easily. I slightly disagree with their sentiment. However I think people need to be available for those child if they needed physical care and someone to talk to for sure!

Before smart phones, there are also people who just can't social regardless since people choose who they want to social with. Weirdos are immediately shut off. But on social media, first impression, physical appearance is not a factor anymore. It helps people social based on topics and knowledge instead of looks and tone etc.
@pencilcheck
@pencilcheck 4 жыл бұрын
My parents did exactly what Dr. Jean do to me when I was young. I don't feel like it makes me better, it actually makes me more obsessed with "technology". I don't suddenly social and become normal, I don't suddenly start talking to people in real life. Banning stuff is not the same as encouraging certain behavior. My mental health don't think has improved. I only improved after I get into work and are forced to be collaborating with others on bigger projects and starting companies. It is a pain to learn but that pain comes with calm and experience. I think arbitrary limitation doesn't help, you need a goal, you need a reason to guide a health interaction with people. Smart phones, social media gives a good reason for people to get on. The physical reasons aren't that attractive anymore. This is like the war on drugs. people ban them, but people keep doing it. This is like physical stores to digital stores, why did netflix exploded instead of blockbuster? People don't talk about mental health that netflix introduced.

Andrew/Zach, you mentioned the kids having daily meltdowns. Please consider having a nutrition-focused doctor on to talk about the state of our food and how it influences our our physical AND mental health. I recommend Dr. Sten Ekberg. You could start with a recent video, "3X Deadlier Than Cancer. & Most People Don't Know They Have It."

No Jean, we’ve not been ok for decades now. There are high schoolers born in America who’ve never had a country at peace. The Profit Motive demands that humans sacrifice sleep, sanity and their time.

It was so long and not that interesting so I don't recall if they mentioned that the increase in cell phone use and social media also gave access to global community where people learned that others were also suffering and how trendy it is to take psych meds and how much that all influenced the mental health numbers increase since 2012.

Don't get it twisted, people like you Yang because you're an outsider. We the people DO NOT want a politician, didn't Trumps victory show you that Yang??. Don't become the DNC's dog with a leash. have a backbone! call the corruption in your own party. Stop defending them. (example- Joe Bidens "your not black" comment) If not, you will lose AGAIN and you know it in your heart Yang. I Prayer for you to build Courage to fight the system🙏.

I have been listening to all the podcasts ever since I discovered this channel. And the more I listen, the more disappointed I get. Not at Yang, nope, Yang didn’t get the democratic nomination because reasons. I am sure there is data somewhere that justifies Biden over Yang. So that shouldn’t have been a surprise. This is politics working as intended. So no I am not disappointed in Yang, or in the system. I am disappointed at myself. I am disappointed at the fact that I was fooled by the talking points of a salesman and I dared to hope that Yang was going to be different. But lesson learned... You really got me though. I though you were going to be the opposite of Trump. A calmed rational person, willing to sit down with others and try to understand their position even if it is not the same as yours. And maybe you are all of those things. The fact that you weren’t a career politician made believe that you were going to be different, that you had yet to be corrupted by the system. So I believed, and when you lost, I it sucked, but there is always the next election. So I believed. But you seem to lack the only quality that for some god forsaken reason I though you had... integrity. The politics is full of corruption and salesmen. Clowns with a silver tongue that promise to tackle the problems of their constituents, but their term comes and goes, and the only thing they achieved was to enrich themselves. Settling for the lesser of two evils is the reason Trump is today the president. Decades of settling for the least corrupt, least of a demagogue, least of a liar, etc. is the reason people do not trust the government and most certainly to not trust the government to have their best interest at heart. I don’t want the least corrupt candidate. The the candidate who isn’t corrupt. Do you know how big of a fool I feel like when I see you campaigning or making a sales pitch for the same corrupt bunch that have consistently failed their constituents and are the cause of the current negative sentiment towards the government. I cannot in good conscience vote for Biden. I don’t think he is capable of performing the duties of the president of the United State. But do not fear. I am going to send a message loud and clear. I would rather vote for a petty, vindictive, narcissistic, orange buffoon that settle for the lesser of two evils.

@Caine830 I've been supporting Yang and donating to him since he started campaigning in 2017. He knows Biden will not be a great president and will continue the status quo. He said from the beginning he would support the eventual nominee. It sucks that the nominee is Biden, and once again we are forced to choose the lesser of 2 evils. With that said, look at what Yang has done so far. The concept of UBI is now at the forefront of American politics, thanks to Andrew. He made it to the top 5 using ONLY grassroots support, not an easy feat. Even now he is raising MILLIONS to families that have lost jobs due to Covid-19. Jack Dorsey just donated 5 million to his cause. I fail to see why you've given up hope in this man who has already done more for average americans than any sitting president in the last 50 years.

Any time people think Trump is the lesser of two evils or needs to be voted for over literally anyone else, I know that that person and I can't ever be friends. Pretty bad take here overall. Good luck in life, Caine830.
