Welcome back to One Trek Mind. With Star Trek Discovery over, and no more seasons on the way, we thought this was a great time to do a bit of a retrospective review of the show as a whole.

the matroska puzzle box that Abrams is known for seems to have taken over nearly all media. I mean it's been a thing since The Lensman, sure.. but tv series these days seem to love the formula

You will not be missed Discovery. Effects met have Ben good but what a waste of money. No real love for Star Trek in this show

Micahel: I don't really agree when people say there was no love for Star Trek. I think it's clear the creators and teams were very much Trek fans, but did a poor job putting their own spin on it for their own show.

I think DISCO was a failure, especially due to its inconsistent writing and focus on Michael Burnham. The writing failed to develop compelling characters, except perhaps Saru, Book, and Culber, to focus on flash visuals. It almost completely lacks the moral complexity that defined its predecessors in the franchise. The criticism placed on Michael Burnham is valid. She is arrogant and essentially a micromanager with an arc that often feels forced-lacking the natural development and depth expected of a lead of a Star Trek series. The inconsistency of the series detracts from its attempt to revive the franchise's spirit of exploration and moral inquiry, which has thankfully been taken up by SNW. I think DISCO will be considered a below-average Star Trek series, slightly above ENT.

Raptor: I fully agree with the inconsistant writing and that there was sometimes a greater focus on flashy visuals over a good story. I agree with you also that atleast as far as im concerned this is low on the list of shows. I would put it below Enterprise, mostly only for the Xindi arc that sorta saves the show. (Also thank you for the well thought out comment that isnt just hate ^^)

Michael: Thank you for the comment! I completely agree as well with the inconsistent writing, but I do still feel it had it's fair share of compelling characters and I still kind of like Michael Burnham, with some definite criticisms. And I really don't know how time will treat the show, but I'm awfully curious to see in ten years time. Not quite as excited as I am for season 3 of SNW, but nevertheless.

I am a writer myself and I would have had a field day with the 32nd century. Imagine the possibilities if they had actually done some discovering to fill out 900 years of history for Earth and all known species. Instead they decided to not show or tell us anything about Earth and most known species, just to focus on fake universe ending stakes with zero consequences. We could have had so much fun with this crew and all those brand new ships. Instead we got Burnham solving all the problems of the galaxy on her own with zero effort, zero humour, zero plot twists and zero tension. It’s as exciting as watching kids solving 1+1, whilst crying about every little insecurity and all the mean people. This crew comes across as whiny, insecure teens, not as a professional spacefaring crew who can withstand all the dangers of the galaxy. It’s a surprise there is even a crew there as the captain does everything on her own and knows more about every field of science than specialised officers. Anyone claiming this is the best Star Trek series can’t be taken seriously. It tries to mimic a Star Trek series but it’s just not intelligent enough. The other shows knew how to send a message buried in a deep and thoughtful story, Discovery just tells you outright what the message is and let’s Michael repeat it several times to make sure you got it. I would gladly rewatch any season of Enterprise above the entirety of Discovery.

Raptor: I agree that the whole 32nd century time jump never felt like it was really made great use of. I also agree that the persistant focus on Buurnham to solve every issue was a negative too. I also agree that in Series 1 and 2 the crew certainly felt less...professional? If that makes sense. Open discussions and debates in public as opposed to ready rooms where those sorts of things should be done.

The Starfleet crews in the real Star Trek shows were mature, highly trained professionals who used their brains to overcome complex issues. The best humanity had to offer. People you looked up to and aspired to be like. The Discovery crew acted like obnoxious, whiny teenagers who constantly cried about whatever or made stupid childish jokes every other sentence. It was like watching a bad CW show. Utterly obnoxious and embarrassing. It’s simply mind boggling the show went on for as long as it did. A total dumpster fire.

Raptor: yeah i agree that sometimes the way the crew acted was not entirely professional at all, which was slightly jarring considering. Even on Voyager, where professionalism bend slightly due to their situation, there was always a line it did not cross.

Star Trek Discovery came out around the same time as The Orville. It's ironic that The Orville is much better and more Star-Trek than Discovery. I love all the characters in The Orville. I care about the crew of the Orville. I don't care about the crew of Discovery at all.

Seasons 1 and 2 started as game of thrones in space: plot twists, shocking revelations and killing off major characters. Seasons 3-5 were the definition of safe space: nothing had consequences, nothing bad happened and even the red shirts had plot armour. The stakes always pretended to be high but in the end everything was solved very easily time and again and nothing bad actually happened. It was boring and anti climactic to have this type of finale for the last 3 seasons.

Raptor: I agree that the show certainly felt like there were no stakes in any of the their galaxy ending issues.

Michael: I felt it was the opposite problem of Game of Thrones. That show had a strong start and terrible finish whereas Discovery for me was a terrible start and a decent finish.

@@OneTrekMind what makes you appreciate seasons 3-5 more? For me it was the most boring and predictable stuff I have ever seen, there were literally no surprises or bad consequences along the way. It tried to mimic a Star Trek story in theme alone, the execution was very poor in my opinion. The stakes were always fake and the 32nd setting was hardly explored.

By far the worst Star Trek product ever. Despite all the money they threw at it; the series was worse than the Scott Bakula series that got no support from the network. Utter trash from the 1st season to the last!

I was in front of the TV for the very first episode and have since seen every episode of Star Trek ever produced. All the feature films plus hundreds of fan made films. My conclusion is...Discovery is not Star Trek. Period. Pure trash!

"Too much about Michael Burnham"?!?! Listen, the producers were VERY clear way back in 2017 before it even launched that the entire show was going to be primarily about the lead character. Not the ship, not the crew. They did EXACTLY what they promised. Complaining about that seven years later as if it was some mistake is kind of off the mark...I mean, if you didn't like that premise they announced in the first place then why watch the show and then complain it's not like TNG or whatever years later? That's like complaining about a vegan restaurant for not serving steaks, years after they announced they were going to be vegan. 🙄 The producers kept their promise. This show was never, ever supposed to be about ship and crew like previous Trek shows, and that was by design. They literally kept their promise to focus on the one lead character primarily. So it's not something I could fathom complaining about lol. 😂 I sure hope you won't complain that Star Trek: Starfleet Academy isn't "in space enough" or something. They told us it would be heavily planet-based, after all. So that's how we should go into it, and expect less space. On another note: I'm in a dozen Trek groups on Facebook. It's beyond clear that the absolute majority of people seem to agree season 1 of Discovery was actually the best. By far. Personally I think it was "okay" and I like the Klingons, but a lot of people said after Season 1 they didn't like much about the show. So, apparently they did a lot of good things in S1. (It definitely attracted tons of new Trek fans, which was the goal).
@OneTrekMind
@OneTrekMind 16 күн бұрын
Raptor: So firstly...everyone is entitled to their opinions. I hated season 1. Thats just my view. Secondly yes...the producers did say that this would be a different sort of show. That doesnt mean they are free from being criticised for their awful writing or storylines. And it also doesnt mean they are free from being criticised from taking that course of action in the first place. Discovery demonstrated that its hyper focus on Burnham was a serious mistake for a Star Trek Show. They deserve the criticism for that. I gave the show the opportunity to show me that it could work with its focus on Burnham, instead of just 'not watching it'. It failed.

Even when taking a focus on just the lead character, they did not really achieve their goals. After 5 seasons I still do not know who MB is. What is her outlook on life, what are her hobbies, her favorite drink, food, anything ? Why does she believe in the federation? What are her motivations and why? Making her Spocks sister and Sarek her "father" also stifled the character, because they could not really add anything interesting or change the characters to give her upbringing some twist. I think they could have done way better in that field if the writers were more competent. The show had great special effects and a great look, a dedicated cast and dedicated people working on it, very interesting characters as a baseline with much potential, but all this opportunity and energy got squandered by the most awful writing and story telling that I have experienced in Trek so far. (Well maybe Picard is worse or equally worse)

Michael: To be fair I watched all of this without knowing the premise or what the creators said in interviews, I just watched it and found myself to enjoy some parts and really despise some other parts. It's not really a binary conversation of I liked or disliked the show. It's a mixed bag.
