I wonder if the people who chose the design for the eggs in Alien actually looked at how reptile eggs hatch. That’d be a really cool design process to learn more about
@childofcascadia
@childofcascadia 20 күн бұрын
@Galinda33 Most reptile eggs dont hatch like that. They just kind of tear little lines in the egg and poke their nose out of one for a day or 2 before they make their way out. Seen lots of snakes naturally hatch but ive never seen such a neat pattern that looks like the way an Alien facehugger egg hatches, ever. Its usually just a random slit when they pip.
@BewaretheWarewolf
@BewaretheWarewolf 20 күн бұрын
@@Galinda33 H.R.Giger the person who created and designed the Xenomorphs, facehuggers and their eggs originally wanted the opening to appear more like female genitalia when that idea was rejected because the producers worried he made it in the shape of a cross because 'Well, if it's a cross, then it's religious, and people don't worry about that'
@sillyjellyfish2421
@sillyjellyfish2421 15 күн бұрын
@@Galinda33nope, there's a funny story about that where the eggs were originally supposed to have a single slit and look like an alien vagina and the hatching being a mockery of the human birth. Obviously, it (and some other things like Rippley walking around butt naked since she was the only one on the ship, so why bother with clothes?) didn't fly so it was changed to the X shape to mock all the christians in the movie commission vetoing that since they "love to look at crosses so much".

For anyone interested: Gigarcanum delcourti was the gecko species on New Caledonia that was larger than a Leachie. They were naturally rare, but not endangered. But went extinct by the mid 1800s due to colonial exploitation of the island.
@hope_xo_xo
@hope_xo_xo 19 күн бұрын
Would it be that one? I made a comment asking about it because they were talking as if the gecko was currently living
@PondScummer
@PondScummer 17 күн бұрын
Actually, it's thought they were on the verge of extinction before the island was fully exploited by colonialism since there is a complete lack or records in french museums or literature besides a single taxidermy specimen, so it might have been an important food source once for the indigenous people there. For the longest time the only specimen known was thought to be from New Zealand, since there's oral stories and a first-hand account of seeing 2ft long giant geckos here in NZ. Only recently DNA analysis shows it's likely more related to New Caledonian geckos, and just last year was put into a new genus; _Gigarcanum delcourti_ with the old name _Hoplodactylus delcourti_ now being an out of date synonym. I feel that's where they've gotten confused.

I always found Crested Geckos to be so cool all because I love their toe pads and their ability to stick and their colors. Their colors remind me so much of fall, which is my favor season, so I really really like that. The Leachies are just so freaking cute- Even as adults they just have such a cute face and I would so want to have one as a pet one day, but that's a future, future, future pet. In the UK you are required to give nocturnal and crepuscular species UV as they do bask and cryptic bask (expose small amounts of themselves through leaves etc). They have access in the wild so if we want the best for our animals we should give them it in captivity. Also worth noting that most places won't allow smaller than 4 x 2 x 2 ft for terrestrial enclosures as that's the smallest that holds a proper heat gradient. I love you guys and what you do, I just wanted to mention that care requirements are higher for the UK
